Laney GH50L at the moment = Booooorinnnnngg.

The sound is so plain and neutral and it is just annoying me, i get so bored of playing on it and tweaking it all the time to try and find a good tone for me.
It might be the Marshall cab with shitety celestions but i'm pretty sure it's the Laney.

I'm not buying an amp right now we are in the early stages, but if i find something good i will be willing to sell the Laney, maybe even the cab if i want a killer combo. I know i won't get much money for that but i have other plans to get myself some money so no need to worry about that.

I want an amp that is bagged with tone, not plain sounding like the Laney i want something that people will listen to and be blown away with.
I have been looking at rectifiers recently like Mesa's and Peavey XXX. They sound awesome and apparently are good for blues aswel as metal.
Has to be versatile and needs a clean channel and a dirty channel as the 1 channel Laney thing does not work for me. I want to play from blues to metal and have a good rock sound too.
I looked at Orange amps too, bit expensive but could be good, though i listened to a clip of the Tiny Terror and it sounded like my Laney!

There's so many options like Engl, Peavey, Marshall (yes the Laney does sound a lot different to these imo), Orange, Mesa etc.

Help me out here, tone is the key!!!

vox valvetronix. it'd be so much easier than changing your gear weekly... you could just twist a knob and have a different sound. maybe you could get a tonelab and plug into the power amp stage of the laney?

The screamer is in the same range as the GH50 and I prefer it to be frank.

Surprised you're bored of your Laney Joe. But I understand the neutral thing its very natural but that's why I like mine. Also agree it doesn't sound like a marshall as some say, the Laney is much smoother and has none of the mid spike and the grit.

I think it's a bargain! Those things are sweet they sound like a smoother JCM800. I had a 50W one and it was beautiful. Too far away for me to buy though.

EDIT: sorry I missed the part when you said youre not yet ready to buy. Keep your Laney I bet you will miss it if you sell.

I'm playing mine right now. i funking LOVE it. not so versatile as a valvetronix obviously; but it is a damn good sound. For out and out metal you'll need a tubescreamer in front of it (to tighten it up and give it a solid state clipping stage which i think is needed for a real mean sound). Give it some time and i bet you'll love your laney again - i definately wouldn't get rid of it.

I have a Monte Allumes modded SD-1 so that won't be a problem.

You had any experience with this valvetronix? It's not one of those huge pedal thingys is it? cuz i suck with those.

look up the 'tonelab', 'tonelab LE', and 'tonelab SE' on the vox website. When i said valvetronix these are what i meant...
The desktop version ("tonelab") might be what you're looking for?

a recto sounds like cr@p for blues, IMO. engl is vastly superior, for half the price.

I never actually knew what an Engl sounds like, i always assumed they were extreme metal amps but they seem to be quite versatile. Might have to look into a Screamer head.

I'm not really into the whole amp modeling thing though, i like my sound to be from the amp with as little pedals/other stuff as possible added.

screamer would be worth a look, also blackmore. those'd be the two main ones I'd look at, unless you come into a lot more cash.

of course, there are loads of other amps worth looking at too... how much can you get up to, realistically?

Steve Morse is proof that the Engl isn't just a metal amp. Always thought his tone was a bit thin, but that could be a tweaking issue.

I don't know about the cash, obviously if there is something i really like i will save for it so it's not really a problem.

And Twinfan speakers are those stock marshall celestions, i have always wanted to change them to v30's though.
