Floyd Rose Trems
« on: July 12, 2005, 06:53:36 PM »
Just wondering about Ibanez Floyd style trems and people's experiences with them. I was after a Low Pro Floyd to replace the Kahler Spyder on my HM Strat but found out they had a string spacing of 50mm instead of 52mm, I guess I'm just more comfortable with a 52mm string spacing. So what are the Ibanez options like and how much would it cost to get one? Oh and another question out of curiosity, I know Schaller and Gotoh are differant companies but what is the differance between the Floyds that these companies produce?

Regards

Hi Kemra,

This should give you all you need to know about these trems - a great site if you want my opinion.

http://www.jemsite.com/axes/htm_features/trems.htm

I've got an original Edge and I love it, I don't think your right about the string spacing.

If you want to purchase one try Nevada Music - http://www.ibanezguitars.co.uk/

I don't work for them but I've had great service from them sourcing a trem arm retainer for my Edge.

Hope it helps

Or give us a shout
We fit floyds and Ibanez edge/lo-pro edges all day and have also used the edge pro (the Jap one is ok but the Korean one is horrid).

An Ibanez one will work great in your HM strat but the posts will need pulling out and replacing and the top route will need to be altered for you as the existing route for the Kahler is the wrong shape

I assume your guitar is similar to the one shown below......

We refretted that one, put a new trem on and a set of Bare Knuckles too and it was awesome afterwards!

@ Feline

Yep my Hm Strat is exactly like that one apart from the fingerboard on mine is rosewood. In your opinion what is the best Floyd style trem?

My personal preference is the Floyd original and lo pro floyd , with the Ibanez Edge and lo-pro edge coming a close second.

The Gotoh one is pretty cool as well

There are a lot of cheap copy floyds and they are not up to the job in my opinion- avoid them if possible

Hmmm I think I'm going to have to go down the local guiatr shop to try out trems, I know they have Ibanez's with trems, but I think the only Floyd guitars they have, all have licencesed versions. The Jackson licencesed trem on the Soloist is a Low Pro I believe, Is that close to a proper Lo Pro Floyd?

Real Original style floyd
and the Kahler 2300 series

Yeah if its already got a floyd cut out you might have to mod it for the edge and definately mod it if you get the kahler but nothing a good luthier couldnt do you'd have to fill up with wood and then recut it. Kahler finally came back in business, they are expensive and so are the edges but they are worth it.

My current HM Strat has a Kahler Spyder installed as stock. The poor thing is getting a bit old unfortunately.
