V30s - can someone enlighten me tech-wise, please?
« on: April 29, 2007, 01:20:02 PM »
Sorry if this is a very silly question, but I'm not too proud to ask it, anyway!

Why does everyone keep mentioning V30s as the speakers of choice? And how are they different from, say, the Celestion GT12 Hot-100s that I have in my Randall Combo?
Don't be afraid to get techy on me; despite the nature of my questions, I'm relatively bright!

Cheers in advance,

Roo

To put it simply - They aren't.

Alot of amps use Green Backs and K-100s etc.

People like V30s because of their tight bass and smooth top end making them good for loadsa gain.

The Hot 100 is more geared at prodigious amounts of Cleans ....Or so I was told when I was making choices about Speakers for my Amp. Vintage30's are incredibly popular with just about everyone or so it seems. Personally....I didn't like em too much, but it's Horses for Courses.

I wouldn't say they're the only good speakers, but they are very popular, mainly because of the tight low end with high gain guitar sounds.

A few years back I did an A/B tryout of a Marshall 1960A cab (Celestion G12-75s) & 1960AV (Celestion Vintage 30s) with a Dual Rectifier.  To my ears the V30s had so much more projection & low end - I liked the sound a lot better with the V30s.  When I eventually bought my amp I got the Mesa 2x12" with V30s.

Another great, but rarely mentioned speaker is the Celestion Classic Lead 80 - I once tried a VHT 212 combo with them & it sounded fantastic.  AFAIK nobody fits them as standard though...

The G12 "Greenbacks" are also popular, but I've never liked them with mega high gain + the 25watt power rating means you need to be careful running a 212 with a 50w head.

FWIW, V30s actually have a handling capacity of 60 watts (or 70, depending on who you believe :)) - not sure what the "30" denotes...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

i was speaking to hayden at matamp about the hot-100 and he said he thought it was a well designed speaker, and very transparent sounding, if boring. i guess it would sound very good clean. i've never tried it myself.

vintage 30s are not very transparent, they colour the sound, and many people think in a good way too. personally, while i like the vintage 30, im not overally keen. vintage 30s are known for their mid-range.

mixing speakers can work well. if you want more mids, you could try changing one of the speakers to start with, as an experiment. v30s get a good price on ebay if you dont like it.

these seem like the heaviest speaker out there: KK uses them, and they're only 36-50 quid (depends where you get them)!
i saw a review and the description sounded just like i am looing for....

Eminence Delta Pro-12A
Electro Voice EVM12L
Celestion G12K100

^^ Propper Metal Speakers

Celestion V30
Eminence Governor
Eminence Wizard
Celestion G12H30

^^ Hard Rock Speakers

Eminence Private Jack
Celestion Greenback

^^ Lighter Rock Speakers but still pretty heavy

The V30's are used by Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons..
Im quite an advocate for the V30 especially in modern voiced amps like Mesa's and ENGL's but i don't agree with Vai's choice of V30 for instance with the Legacy, Greenbacks are better for him.. and TBH im sure he uses greenbacks anyway on his own cabs, atleast thats what my ears tell me..

I use V30's atm in my ported cab..

Have previously used G12H100, G12T75, V30, Private Jacks, Governors..

I've currently got a new handmade cab on order which has got Fanes in on the advise of TO(Ben), but only because they're free.. unless that totally astound me they're getting replaced with Greenback Reissues or Scumback H55/H75 combo for my splawn..
