I get jealous of massive guitar collections, but I don't have a problem with people owning them.

Although I would be a bit miffed if a lottery winner or a royal decided to start playing guitar and just went out and bought a prs custom or something.

Have to agree with that sentiment.

I have no problem with collectors as long as they actually like guitars.

It's the people who in reality are as interested in collecting guitars as much as matchbox labels that I tend to have issues over. My father collected stamps and was as usually more interested a common stamp (from an interesting place or time) as he was in an expensive one.

As long as the collector enjoys owning them I would never dream of having an issue. Paul Allen (ex of microsoft) is an example of this kind of rich but interested collector

Why? What difference does it make? [Car analogies will not be accepted, since some cars are genuinely harder to drive than others... :)]

If you have earned your money and want to become a guitarist, go out and buy whatever and however many guitars as you like, you've earned your money, spend it on what you like.

Royals and Lottery winners who have to start on beginner instruments like the rest of us and work up to a real nice guitar I don't have a problem with because they've earned the right to a nice guitar.

Lottery winners and royals who decide to start and spend a mint on their first axe annoy me largely because of the injustice of it. where have they got their fortunes from? picking numbers and being born respectively.

Yet there are guitarists who are truly excellent and have been playing for years, who really deserve a custom of some description, but can't afford it.

Fancy a revolution comrades?

i only buy guitars that really capture my attention and i think i'll only have about 5 max when i'm done... but of course, if someone wants to own heaps of guitars who's to stop them?

I know what you mean, but the problem is when you go out to a couple of good stores, you always see something that grabs your attention (for a while anyway).

I could imagine myself if I had a few million in the bank, ending up a collection in an unintentional way. I understand John Entwistles old collection as it seemed to grow in that manner.

However I don't understand collections that are purely about bragging rights though. You may as well brag about your collection of matchboxes

^ agreed. if i had almost limitless cash (and assuming if i did, i had room to store them), i could see myself having loads of guitars... but it'd be kinda "this one's for when i need that early 50's tele tone, this one's for the 60's strat tone..., this one just sounded and played awesome in the shop..." etc.

That's exactly how I've ended up with as many as I have

Also need to add "this one was a total bargain"  ;)

When I'm having GAS, the girlfriend tries to be the voice of reason and points out that my parents will say "But you don't NEED another one!"  To which my response is inevitably, "Wrong!  You always need more!  I can have this one tuned to D standard, this to Drop C, this to..."

She just gives up, so I win. :D  But yes- my point is that you should collect if you find the guitars nice and really like them- and probably intend to play them, since a guitar gathering dust should not exist.  People who have guitars in the corner of their room but don't play them get on my tits. ^_^

Well, I take turns with mine, one one day, another one the next, and so on. They still get a bit of dust on them though :(

Well, you know what I mean- people who have guitars but never, ever play them and they've only got 5 strings and they've sat in the same place for years, only getting moved around when the mother comes in to clean the room... grrr. >_<  I take turns on my current two as well ^_^  My Les Paul is my band guitar currently since it sounds so nice tuned down, so to compensate for using that a lot I play the Flying V whenever I'm practicing at home. :D
