Really unsure about what pickup to get
« on: May 06, 2007, 12:58:03 AM »
Hello all, I'm brand new here. I've been eyeballing BKP's for the better part of a year. And now, for the life of me, I don't know which pickup to get (I'm only going to snag one at a time for now.. money is always an issue =p)

Anyway, here's what I have:
Carvin DC727 (Mahogany body + Walnut top. Maple neck, two walnut stringers).
The kind of sound I want is something that's very full sounding. I like a good midrange focus that really comes through in a mix and adds balls to my sound. I play a mixture of death metal, punk, and southern rock. My rig is a Genz Benz El Diablo 100 with 6L6 tubes, and a Genz Benz 2x12 cab.

I don't use an excessive amount of distortion.. I like the "chunk" from the distortion more than I like the saturation.. kind of an early thrash sound, but with some extra bass. I'm not a huge user of cleans, but I would like for them to be pretty clear and defined if I do need them.

I'm leaning either towards Miracle Man or Warpigs. What do the know-it-alls of BKP think? =)

Death metal, punk and southern rock is a wide range. Can you name us some bands?

Hrm. Well, it's hard to say off of the top of my head. I'm a big fan of Dying Fetus, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, stuff like that. I absolutely love the tone off of Exodus' album "Shovel Headed Kill Machine". The southern rock and punk stuff isn't really a huge issue.. we play it with our own style.

Warpig, then. Conventional A5 one for a little more of an organic sound for your southern rock stuff. Great DM pickup, and that seems to be your main thing. For punk...well, its punk, does it really matter?

Why wouldn't it matter? Is punk only played by deaf guys or something? Man, I hear this on every forum: "Ooohhh you play punk? Then it doesn't really matter what guitar/amp/effect you get..."   So if you play metal your a genious, but if you play punk that means you're incompetent?

I don't mean to be a dick, maybe I even misinterpretet the whole thing. I play everything from metal to pop-rock, but in my band, we play punk-rock. I have a vintage Marshall JCM800, a JCM900, a 1977 Super lead, an Epi LP and a Gibson SG. I have actually been told I don't deserve the gear I have because I play punk. I may play punk but I am very specific about my sound and I'm pleased to say, I finally found the perfect sound with a little help of a Bare Knuckle MQ.

Again, I'm sorry if I misunderstood and I'm sorry for the off topic.

Erm surely getting the best tone with the best gear defies the entire idea of punk?

yeah dude caring about what you sound like is soooo not punk rock (well not in the purest sense anyway). I like to play punk with good tone too though - yu just have to pretend you havent spend hours and hours and thousands of £$£$£ perfecting the sound.
LOVING the Mules!

Ok, I got another question =)

My Carvin has two screws on the bass-side of the pickup and a single screw on the treble side. Will there be any issue with that?

Hey up dude, welcome over here :D

I'd say the pickup screw alignments wont be a problem. at the most you'll just have to buy a new pickup ring or just put another hole between the two on the bass side.

I just downloaded shovel headed kill machine. Dear god the vocals suck, but the tone is indeed awesome and a warpig would be great for it. Heavy, clear, gutsy mids, sorted. Decent album, this is turning out to be, guitar wise. I may buy it.

P.S. Troy

Punk is an attitude with powerchords, not a tone. That attitude is one that doesnt know or want to know anything more about your gear than what colour your guitar is, how many stickers you can fit on it and how loud your amp is.

But you didnt misiterpret anything. I hate punk, and I shant apologise for it  :P

Hey, cool to see you over here, too =)

The 727/747's don't have pickup rings, they're direct mounts..

And you shouldn't.  :)    I was a bit of a dick before, sorry about that. I agree with what you said about attitude. When you say punk you probably think bands like the Ramones, Clash, Pistols right? They were all about attitude and they probably didn't give a f$%# about their gear. But I was talking about modern punk bands like Green day, Blink, New found glory (i hate all of those bands but they have good guitar tone). Let's just say that with Bare knuckles, punk sounds that much better  :P

thadood: I agree with the others. Get a Warpig, it's a beast!

Edit: Oh yes, get an Alnico Warpig!!!! Def the one for you.

On the other hand, Steve Jones out of the Sex Pistols was by all accounts an impeccabily tight guitarist who took a great deal of care over his guitar tone ... although I think he did claim to have stolen some of his Les Pauls ... :)

IMO Punk is about appearing not to care ... the punk genre is, and to some extent always has been, fastidious in its attention to detail over fashion, lyrical content and musical style.
