how would you put distortion on a voice clip or from a microphone??

You will need a plug in to run the waveform through.

....from the mic??? does that mean i can't run it through a standard guitar fx pedal??

what bout if i wanted to add some after it's been recorded??

Hmm, if you want to distort the mic's signal before you record, you need to run it this way:

MIC > MIC PRE > LINE OUT ... DISORTION EFFECT > LINE IN

Afterwards you need to use a computer plug in.

Trash is pretty good for that sort of thing I think it has both telephone and loudhailer distortion presets http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/trash/

Combine bandpass fillter and drive stage, otherwise it will be too fizzy or boomy, the bandpass will only let mids through. You could also experiement with a sweep.

Try plugins but also try outboard FX (e.g. run mic through a Wah into an overdrive or Fuzz or even just a cranked gain stage of a mic pre or mixer channel - my mackie is clipping very nicely actually).

There also used to be a great preset for that clipping radio voice stuff in my old SE70 for that ... in case you know anyone who's got that unit.
