Author Topic: Another need help choosing a pickup thread (Read 2543 times)

I've got a Carvin DC727. Mahogany body, mahogany neck, maple quilt top, birdseye maple fret board SS jumbo frets.
My bridge pickup (stock is anemic) very thin and bright sounding (almost like a fender strat tone).
I'm running a 5150 combo into a Marshall 1960Ax top (greenbacks).
I'm looking for a bridge pickup that will really fatten the sound up (not quite so bright), but I don't want something real scooped sounding either.
I usually play stuff like Nevermore, Dream Theater, SYL, Arch Enemy, but I'd like to be able to use it for stuff like Satch, VH, Greg Howe, Vinnie Moore etc.
I'm thinking either Miracle Man or Alnico Warpig or a Rebel Yell for the bridge and a Cold Sweat for the neck?
I want clear note definition but not sterile.
for reference I don like the sound of EMG 707's thru a 5150.
I have a duncan sh-5 going in at the end of the month but I have a feeling that I am going to like BK's better so I need to figure what set to get.

don't really listen to any of the listed bands, so can't really help with your choice, but just to let you know, the Rebel Yell neck and Cold Sweat Neck are the same pickup

Miracle Man sounds good for the Nevermore, Arch Enemy, SYL etc. but for the versatility it won't fair too well, so ima going to recommend you a Nailbomb as it can do those heavier bands but also do the other bands that you mentioned.

holy diver is great for arch enemy and DT too
for nevermore i'd go with alnico warpig

what are the tonal differences betwwen an MM/alnico Warpig/nailbomb/Holy Diver?
keep in mid as well the descrption of the guitar as well? do some of these pickups sound better /worse in certain body wood?

miracle man will sound tighter on bass, sharper on highs and less full on mids
holy diver sounds full, heavy, more balanced and organic, less tight (but tighter than Michael Amott and John Petrucci pickups)
warpig will sound even fuller an heavier, but very organic

holy diver works great with my peavey rockmaster and my single rectifier
it's an all time metal and hard rock pickup

The Warpig will certainly give you more than enough power for the Nevermore stuff, without ever sounding sterile (as EMGs are often accused of being). One possibility might be a Warpig set, with a treble bleed capicitor on the volume control, to back them off slightly without losing any tone for those more 'refined' moments.
