Could anyone recommend me a microphone for recording guitar, I've got about £50 to spend. I've seen quite a few people are using a Shure sm57, is this a decent mic or are there better ones for a similar price? Any suggestion?

Shure SM57 seems to be the best for everyone. Sennheiser make some great mics but it will cost you more than double what you have.

samson CO1U

goes direct into your USB socket so theres no need for mixer etc and best of all no latency problems and the quality is about the same as a SM57 if a bit more responsive.

theyre about £47

SM57 is pretty dependable for the money. With your budget, I'd say go for it.

SHURE SM57 is preferable

I'm on a music tech course so we have to do mic comparisons ALL the time

if you want though you could get away with a SM58 which is more versatile and is mainly used for vocals as well as alot of other things
so if you plan on using it for many purposes i'd recomend a 58

We ran out of 57s today so we mic'ed my amp up with a 58 and it does a good job

You could always try looking at the Shure PG57.

It's like a real SM57, but cheaper... ;)

SM57 if you can stretch to it (I've seen them for around £65) - it's a good reliable & popular mic for recording guitar.

I've had good results with the Sennheiser E906 (all my clips were recorded with it) but that's nearly double your budget.  You could look at the Audix i5 but that might also be a little expensive...
