went to soundcontrol in milton keynes today....

tried a few schecters, Gibson les paul studio, and a PRS very similar (i think it might be exactly the same model), as this one:

http://machinehead.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/38_116/products_id/643

but in orange.

up until i tried the PRS, some cheap schecter was top of the bunch... ahead of the gibson which was more than TWICE the price...

then the PRS... and just... wow... it blew me away, having never properly played something of that quality before...

i was constantly thinking of all the spec i had in mind for a possible custom guitar... and this (in an odd way) was actually really close...

- the neck was felt very similar in length and balance to my Gibson (same scale i think...? i havent checked)

- at the same time, the profile was much more leaning towards my jackson, but a bit slimmer and a bit wider i think.

- there was body carving.. BUT it was pretty shallow, and the central column, i.e. where the pickups and bridge are- was COMPLETELY flat... so it felt really natural for me to play, just like my melody maker.

- the two humbuckers were controlled with a 5-way rotary switch, which coil-split each humbucker (i think...?) meaning it was bloody versatile...

- the humbuckers themselves were really quite nice, and played through a Marshall JVM it sounded excellent. (although i would still replace the pickups in time i think, as it did lack SOMEthing)...

- it also has locking tuners, and a vintage trem (which is bearable- as long as it isnt a floyd)...

so to cut a long story short... I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

i was thinking in my head... "what would i possibly change if i went custom".... and i honestly couldnt think of a thing....

it looked and played exactly how would want.. i know i said a lot i wanted a natural finish, but that was realy due to my hate of really spangly flame and quilt tops... so this solid, bright orange was a similarly nice alternative- VERY striking as well - would look awesome on stage.

dont have the money right now, so ive had it reserved for two weeks...

im not jumping to conclusions just yet... gonna try some more stuff to make sure this is the right decision... but its just such a gorgeous guitar... i fell in love with it the second i picked it up.

EDIT: just found the exact model:

http://www.prsguitars.com/cemahogany/index.html

anyway- no real point to this.... just wanted to inform a few of those who have helped me out a GREAT deal (thanks again everyone), of where im headed...

all the advice definitely sent me in the right direction... and the encouragement to try stuff out is what made me do so today.

cheers!

I love my PRS. It's a standard 24 built in 1990, so it's got a brazillian rosewood fretboard, one piece tremolo, small neck heel and all the other nice stuff. Never really liked many PRS's but this one hit the spot. It's like my Strat and RG, it's like an extension of me and couldn't imagine not having it anymore.

but anyway    when you get the money, go for it because you won't regret it

PRS' are some of the best guitars on the planet.

If you get a good one.

So make sure you play every single one in the shop - Even of the same model. Because I assure you - No matter how good the one you played was, if you look through the rest of the stock you might find one that trumps it.

Same policy applies with Gibsons.

cheers for that.

theres a blue one of the same model in machinehead, so i'll give that a try as well.

i'd heard that a lot about gibsons, so had some preconceptions before i even tried anything... but i have to say... the Studio was nowhere near worth £800... considering my mates £300 epi is only a little bit worse... (definitely noticable though).... and considering this PRS was going for £999- the Gibbo was £800....  really surprising.

and tom- the Santana is the coolest of the SEs in my opinion... has a bit of character... the blue with the tortoiseshell-type scratchplate is awesome.

prs are very nice, if a bit dear for what they are over here...

i'd seriously, if at all possible, suggest trying out some eggles... they feel very similar to PRS's to me, for less cash...

of course, if the prs is "the one", by all means go with that.

yer i was concerned about price... i wasnt even CONSIDERING trying a PRS until i realised i tried an £800 Gibson.... why not try a similarly priced competitor?

if it was at its retail price (around £1499), then it would be a different story...

in fact the cheapest other place i can find it is still about £1200... and machineheads USED one is £999, (same price)... so it seems more reasonably priced than normal.

but im still gonna try and get to coventry to try some eggles, after robs (endless    ) recommendations, and now yours.

that single-cut Eggle 'Seville' prototype has been a favourite of mine for ages.

we shall see!

but all i know at the moment is that i would LOVE to have that PRS with me right now to play through the ENGL... my god...

FRUSTRATION!

^ yeah, i mean to me (and from what i can remember), my eggle's neck feels very slightly thicker than the prs wide thin (which is awesome), and a lot thinner than the wide fat (which feels, to a shredder like me, like a baseball bat, lol).

do you know which prs neck you tried? EDIT: according to that link you posted, the 22 fret is wide fat, the 24 wide thin.

as i said, i'm not down on prs at all... just the prices here. and £800 sounds like a kickass price for one... they're normally around £1200-£1300, i think.

EDIT: jj might be worth a try too. i think i prefer eggle though.

ahh interesting...

yer i think it was the 22 i tried, which makes it wide-fat.... suited me perfectly coming from the Gibson and Jackson... it was almost like a mix between the two.

as i said- i just kinda naturally setlled in to playing it.

whats JJ? lol

i really am interested in an Eggle though... especially since you mention how the necks seem to feel... if it comes to it, i'll get this PRS, and then think about an Eggle... both would be cool to have; Eggles really appeal to me cause i like stuff thats 'different'... but at the same time i could have a bit of a showy-axe in the PRS  :)

nice!

i love p-90s.

and Feline- kinda... if i dont get enough, or i dont make enough in time... then i'll get something slightly more affordable... eggle e.t.c.

but basically, playing the PRS has made me realised the extent to which i am unhappy with my guitars. the ENGL is staying (forever).

but yer, a change is needed, and imminent!
