2x12 cabs - Framus vs Tube Town vs HH!
« on: May 20, 2007, 09:57:48 PM »
Now that we're getting more gigs in the band I'm moving my stuff around even more than usual - my cab is a pain in the arse to get in and out of the house/car/pubs. Its bloody heavy and awkward! So I decided to get a new one thats a bit easier to move yet still sounds good like mine does.

The first option is to get a Framus 2x12 (£200 with V30s from thomann). If I dont like the V30s I guess I could sell them and put in some G12Hs, but is the construction of the Framus cab even good enough to give a big sound?

2nd option - Tube Town british 2x12 unloaded (with black tolex/grille and piping to look like a Marshall cab). This costs about £150 shipped I think, and I'd put 2 G12Hs in it most likely (allready have one), bringing the total to pretty much the same as the Framus.

http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/product_info.php/info/p1816_TT-British-Speaker-Cab-2-12-.html/XTCsid/2a6c2855b35dd2fe655a73f5ae88735b

Has anyone tried either cab? If so, how is the construction and sound of each?

Just cant decide what to do right now :(

edit - just found this HH on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300113328160&fromMakeTrack=true

Anyone used them, and any opinions? I am fine with replacing the speakers if the construction/wood in the cab is of good quality.

To be honest, I'd suggest getting a used 1936 Marshall cab like I did.  Around £175 used, sell the G12T-75s for £40 and the cab's only cost you £135.

The 1936 is a great sounding 2x12.  Plus more moveable if you get castors for it too  ;)

I heard that only the older 1936 are good, but the newer ones are cr@p. I'd rather not risk getting a new one made of mdf or whatever they use now. The thing is, my current cab is made of good stuff (I'm guessing, thats why its so heavy!), I dont want do "downgrade", I just want something a bit more compact/light without sacrificing a good tone.

I have the framus 2x12 and it can handle gigs. it also sound very good to my ears.
when I first got is from the store it had an annoying buzzing. I returned it and got it back ok and am happy with it eversince. they said they just fastend the speaker screws a bit.

hm so it fills the room well then? I just found a clip that someone on HC did with their VH100R (pretty much the same amp as mine) into a Framus cab with V30s and it sounds awesome :)

Who says newer 1936 cabs are cr*p?  Me and "Malcolm" use them and they're great - nice and tight sounding with plenty of bass.

Don't listen to them _tom_, there is lot of opinion without substance there, apart from some exceptions. Chances are that the guys who are bashing the new 1936s never even played one of each period.

Well, the best 2x12 that is out there seems to be the OS Bogner, however that'll set you back around 500 GBP so maybe that's not an option.

My Heritage cab cost around 300 GBP at Haar (www.haarguitars.nl) - it's a great great cab, not as tight as some, rather very resonant, has tons of punch and good bass (due to its ported design). Comes with mixed Vintage30 and 12H30. When I tried cabs there, he also had a Brunetti 2x12 which was awesome too (very agressive sounding, but great) which had some dents and was going for less, I almost bought the Heritage AND the Brunetti as it was such a good deal. Haar is a quality guy, though he is more of a distributor than retailer, but maybe contact him in case you're interested, he might have some interesting stuff for you.

hmm good point hunter.. I emailed Haar to see what he's got for sale. The Brunetti 2x12 looks really nice.

The thing with the Marshall 1936 cab - they always seem to be up for sale on ebay. This gives me the impression they arent that desirable really.

Get you, snobby gear boy  ;)

They've sold lots of them so there's loads about.  Same goes for Marshall 1960 cabs too, and Fender Strats, and Gibson Les Pauls - are they all cr*p too?  Of course not.

You should try one and see what you think, although they will sound different with the G12T-75s when compared to your speakers.

 true.. I wish the shops round here had em to try out, I'm pretty sure they only seem to stock the cheaper ones, though I will go have a look sometime to make sure. If I cant find one to try I think I'm just gonna get the Framus.

Theres actually someone on harmony central selling a 4x12 Marshall with G12Hs, looks great, but will be just as annoying to move about as my current cab :(

Harmony Central can suck my balls, Marshall 1936 cabs are great absolutely nothing wrong with them.
Framus could be good but they look ugly

i think i've tried that brunetti cab... can't remember much about it, it was certainly "decent"... i didn't have it at high volume, so it was hard to tell.

I actually think that the Framus cab looks pretty good. Anyway, replace the grille with black and it'll look like a Marshall cab :P

I just worry and procrastinate too much, almost to the epic levels of you, Dave  If Dad lends me his card to use to order the Framus (Thomann dont accept Solo cards :(), I'll order it later on this week :D
