Tele pickup advice...Piledrivers??!!
« on: June 11, 2007, 12:02:32 AM »
Hi Guys

I have just bought my 1st fender, a baja tele. Its a great guitar, but compared to my other guitars (p90 jr style) its weak and twangy.
I tried em out at band practice....my p90 guitars all sound great, nice and fat and overdriven, but plug the tele in and I get a drop in volume, cleaner sounds and too much twang!!I could adjust the amp, or use a pedal I suppose, but I liek a simple setup, I just want to be able to plug in and go!!
I'm looking to put something beefier, warmer and dirtier in there. The idea is I can plug either guitar into my plexi combo and I'll get warm fat dirty tones without having to tweak the amp settings.

What do you guys reckon??!!

I had a similar problem with my Tele when I 1st got it.

I spoke to Tim and he recommended a Piledriver bridge pickup with 500k Volume and Tone controls, to allow a little more top to come through than with 'standard' 250k pots.

The Piledriver in my Tele with the Volume and Tone controls fully open is fat and full, but still with some of that traditional Tele twang. Back the volume control down a bit and the tone clears up slightly and sounds more like a traditional Tele bridge pickup.

The Piledriver is the only Bareknuckle Tele pickup that I've tried, but there are plenty of guys on here that have experience with the other Tele pups :D

Isn't twang what a tele is all about?

If P90s are your standard, clearly the Piledriver is the one for you.

Hi Riff,
I've used the Boss and the Piledriver on my tele. Both sound round and full when turned up and clean up as you wind back the volume. The Boss will still give a very authentic tele sound when wound back, the Piledriver not quite so accurate. However the Piledriver (with 500k pot) wound up full is definitely the nearest you are going to get to the P90 sound you like without changing the pickup format (HB/P90)
Is that a Cornell Plexi combo? 18/20 watts is a little less powerful than some of your previous Matamps  :o

As much as I love my County Boys, they definately would not suit you.I only say this to eliminate them from the choice as it makes it easier with less to chose from methinks.
