Laney GH50L Questions.
« on: June 15, 2007, 07:51:25 PM »
Hi everyone.
I'm new on this forum, although i have been reading many many posts on it.

Let me introduce myself: My name's Matthias, I'm 17, and i'm French, so please excuse me for the mistakes i'll make in the future   .

Now you know me ( :P ), i have questions to ask you:
-First, i've noticed that many people have a GH50L head here: It's very interesting for me because i need some informations about it.
For example, i would like to know what kind of valves would sound the best for classic rock and metal (I love Slash particularly)?

-Next, what about the speakers? I would like to change mine (I have Celestions 70/80 in my Laney box) but i hesitate beetwen G12H and V30.
Which ones do you think would sound the best for the same kind of music?

If I ask you all theses questions, it's because i don't reylly like my tone with this head, although i love _tom_'s one, for example ( particularly on the GNR track 8) )

Sorry for this long post, but your answers will be helpul for me!

Thanks a lot, and rock on!

Are you sure that you are not Tom's little brother or something? You sound just like him!!

Tom's favourite player is Slash and he has one so it must be ok for something!! The tones he gets are really nice.

What other gear are you planning on using with it?

El34's are the valves I would go for.

G12H speakers are like greenbacks mixed with V30's from what I hear.

I've go a brother named Thomas, but he doesn't have a GH50L

Otherwise, the main guitar I use with this amp is my Gibson SG Std. It has the original Gibsons Pickups, but I think I'll change 'em for Mules, I just love their tone!

I sometimes use my Kramer 84' Reissue with it too.

The third guitar I use i my father's one: It is a 65' Lserie Stratocaster. This guitar i really magic, but I'm sad to admit it sounds very bizzare with the Laney amp.

I plug my guitar in the head, and that's all!

Hmm Tom plugs straight in and it sounds awesome. Could be your valves and/or speakers.

What sounds are you going for?

I find it quite tricky to recommend something here as you say Classic rock and metal which are very far apart in terms of valves and speakers. Let me explain:

For metal the best type of valve would be 6L6 (to my ears), i have them in a Laney VC50 which has the same overdriven sound as the GH50L and it sounds more metal than when i had my GH50L with EL34's, though EL34's are still ok for metal but better than 6L6 for Classic rock.

For the speakers, i would say V30 for metal but again the twist is G12H better for classic rock.

If you can it would be best if you could try these products in a guitar shop and see what you like before putting them in your amp. If you can't then i'm sure someone else could find you a solution as i realise this post wasn't very helpful  sorry!

Hi there!

I used to own a GH50L and they are great amps.  If you love the Slash tone, then I would suggest:

* EL34 output valves in your amp (Gives it a Marshall-type sound)
* Celestion Vintage 30s in your cabinet (As used by Slash.  Always.)
* Stormy Monday pickups in your SG, not Mules (Lower power, as preferred by Slash)

That should see you right  :D
