well lads i just bought a guitar off ebay an it has a calibrated set of MM.right its a jackson dkmg, one of the new ones....while i still have an older model (pre2005) and its like half thee weight of mine.
i have a X2N in my original J and i mean its a brute compared to th new one.....i know its not the MM's  fault, but im confused.

both are supposed to be alder bodies but i cant explain the massive wieght difference, im transplanting the MM set into my older J whenever my new soldering iron arrives. so i can see whats is affectin th tone so much .as i bet onve its in my other guitar the MM set will really shine!

anyone got any advice about it?
like should i try other BK pups in the alder body as MMs are too bright for it as im after a beefy chug with ALOT of highs...surely MMs are the way to go??????????????

 new jackson

was it the snakeskin jackson with burnt chrome mm set?

and normally heavier in a guitar is worse

as it means the wood is more compressed therefore doesnt resonate as well.

how close are the MMs to the strings

i had to get mine really close to get the best sound out of it as it wasnt beefy enough where i normally have them id say mine is 2,5mm away

hahahaha  no man i WISH  it was the snakeskin jackson!!! that was fine but very dear.

reallly if the guitar is heavier its not as good?i though with th heavier wood it would have more bass resonance.
bugger that.

they are about 2mm from the strings... so shouldnt be causin a prob.sound is very clear and that but meh somethings not right about them...maybe in just reall intune with my other J??ive had it for  3yrs now and its all i play.

or is the x2n hotter than th MMs??it isnt as clear but its likely got a higher output. the MM set is coil tapped but that wouldnt make a difference would it? maybe the guy i got it off hasnt got em wired just right though i doubt thats the reason.

annoyed....maybe the warpig is what im after, ceramic

the x2n is higher output and it could very well be a wiring problem i had a slightly dodgy connection on mine when i installed it and it sounded really week compared to the ibanez v8 humbucker that was in the rocket roll that i replaced with the MM before i sold it.

And yes sometimes heavier is good in woods that are meant to be heavy but alder is a fairly light wood.

as far as i know theres 3 grades of wood from the tree (im just gonna repeat what a guy on the esp forum told me)

at the bottom of the tree the wood is really compressed from the weight of all the wood above it hence it being really dense and heavy, this wood is used for cheap cr@p guitars such as encores etc.

half way up its less compressed and of an everage weight this is what goes into epis mid range ltds etc

at the very top it isnt compressed at all but theres less wood up there this is the best tonally but because of the amount available it costs a hell of a lot more (hence the prices) this is generally used for esps high end gibsons etc.

hopefully that helps

cheers man!!!

its gave me a better idea about my guitars...the miracle man J does have more bass than the other...but i thought that was th pup.
the heavier guitar has a better crafted body and neck. its a jap dkmg...but so is the other.
its just abit odd why they are so different.

well i should be gettin my new soldering iron the marra so ill change em over to see anyways.
though i need new elecxtrics too.im using a massive iron atm...    but i think its hit something on the selector as it causin havoc with me sound so im gonna try my hand at repairin it then body modifyin.

ill keep you guys posted over th next week on how shes comin.just need a day off shite work!

the differences will be due to craftsmanship and the fact that no two trees are every the exact same.

Hopefully you can sort your problems out.

are your MMs in the new guitar covered?

if so what? if theyre BC or gold and you decide you dont want them down the line i know someone after a bridge MM and im after a neck :D

hahah man im actually lookin to trade them i think.....for a warpig bridge plus some cash maybe as they are a wee bit dearer   and  likely a different neck, open to suggestions on that.
so if you got a trade in mind im all ears.oh both are open coil balck pups.

um aye i really think my original jackson is better.it sounds fuller...maybe that new one is better but im more accustomed to mine  :?
plus the neck is alot better....piranha fret marks are the shiz!!

dunno ive just ordered a 500k vol pot and 2 250ktone pots so when i get it all sorted i can judge th sound better.
may put the x2n in the new J to see what that sounds like also.
who knows my ears mught just be wrong, but i like the arch top too which the new one doesnt have.fussy fussy fussy

the arch top will also be another factor as to why its heavier :D

and as i said different craftsmanship

older jacksons are better anyway period.

Plus the older one the wood has had more time to erm do whatever it does that makes it resonate better

over age it gets better or something.

i dont have anything to trade really i was looking more to buy the neck one.

damn right man, my old boy is still king

but i like th wee curve of the new one where your pickin arm rests...i can anchor better on the bridge and pick more accuratley an fast so im gonna sand down the old one to replicate that then re spray it.  :D

um ill give it a think aboot sellin the neck pup though im sort of reluctant to do that  as its sweet!!!!
ill see in a wee while man when i get them transfered ill let you know.

well i just swapped the pups into my older guitar and indeed a miracle has happened!!they are now the  frickin brutes!! i mean the guitar is louder than when i had the x2n in it,more precise and heavy soundin!!! i mean im playin death riffs and its soundin more full on than they ever did....i wish chuck(r.i.p  ) had of got his hands on  a set of BKs.

well thanks for th replies guys, im not off aGAIN to sunday but im gonna strip all the electrics out and sand the old boy down and see what i can do with him.will post some piccies of the project...some b4 and after type of stuff.
whenever i get it done that is lol

still thee riddle of the weight difference bugs me but alas
