hey everyone

I was just wondering which EMGs did Mark Knopfler use. I ask just because I saw a clip of him using EMGs live and the sound was surprisingly stratty considering the output of the EMGs. He used a HSS configuration. Anyone know?

here's the clip

Can you get EMG's in white? They look more like Lace Sensors to me, which would sound strattier as far as I know (having never used them, or the single coil EMGs which he could also be using).

The other possibility is that they're passive EMGs? We often forget that EMG don't only do active stuff.

In short, I don't have a clue what he was using :D

EDIT: This shows a picture of it and says they're EMGs, although not which ones

EDIT 2: Had a quick browse of some other forums, and he was using 85/SA/SA

Damn I totally had forgotten how good knopfler is!

I would say the tone is more in his playing and amp rather than the pickups, they don't seem very characteristic to me.

yeah actually the tone in that recording I didn't like much at all. Sounded kinda fizzy and not very clear. There are cliips of knopfler and clapton where knopfler uses the same guitar and clapton's sound is much better, fuller and clearer. I was just curious. actually EMG 85 /sa/sa set was my guess since 85 is I think the smoothest sounding EMG in the bridge and well...they only have 2 single coil sets. the tone was quite disappointing though..

thanks for the replies

IIRC When I was doing the research to answer your question, I didcovered that this was knopfler's favourite and most used guitar - so i don't see how the tone would be much different from that which you're used to :P

EMG have always been available in white, ivory and black.

Mark fell into using them when he got that Pensa Suhr guitar
Prior to that he had been a Fender and Schecter user with a bit of Gibson Les paul here and there.

Knopfler would always sound like himself no matter what he played in my opinion.

But what about a nice set of BKP "Sultans" for that early sound that Mark made his name with.

i fitted a nice set of engraved chrome 25th anniversary emg's to a explorer a few years ago - they looked very nice, still sounded like emg's though.
