Air Norton and BK question
« on: June 25, 2007, 09:18:13 PM »
I was wondering. Which BK pickup would be most similar to DiMarzio's Air Norton in NECK position? My guess is that it would be the NAILBOMB, am I right?
I wish women were like pickups - if they lack output, you sell them... or ask Tim to rewind them :D

Sorry, I don't know the answer to this question, but if memory serves, it has come up quite recently. You might want to try the search function.

^ now you mention it, mine does feel/sound a wee bit like the AN. Best to take this with a pinch of salt though, i certainly haven't tried them head to head.

Well, I don't know why, maybe it's my ear, but i don't think air norton has so much highs in it. And so I checked the specifications on dimarzio.com:

treble 5
mid 7
bass 6.5

Cold sweat kinda sounds too scooped to be compared with Air norton, IMHO. But maybe I'm wrong?

Can only compare the AN on my LP copy with the Naibombs on my RGT...so not a direct comparison..though both are mahogany bodied....one with a glued neck and one with a through neck..but..I'd say there was no doubt that th NB neck pup is way beyond anything the AN can do...its just got more of everything, even though on paper the spec might look similar.
The only time I got the NB neck sounding anything like an AN was when I was experimenting with pup height and had it screwed right down almost flat to the pup surround about 6mm from the strings when fretted at the 24th fret.
So I guess I'm saying that the AN sounds a bit like a NB that's not close enough to the strings

The magnetic field of the Air Norton is weaker than that of regular Alnico V 'buckers thanks to the 'airbucker' trick (small spacers between the magnet and the polepieces), so it could indeed result in a softer attack and less focused sound, as if the pickup was lower under the strings. :)

cold sweat is not as hot as air norton and is voiced different
it's a little scooped, like a paf and it's dc resistance is 8.35k, like air classic, not air norton
but it's plenty of fluid sustain for soloing, the best cleans i've heard (a lot better then my miracle man neck) e and it's tight enough even to play neck rhythm

but maybe the nailbomb could sound closer to air norton

my cold sweat sounds very warm. that might be the fact it's in a mahogany/maple neck thru guitar though. From what i remember of the AN, it was very warm too. It is a while since I've tried it, though, so as i said previously, take anything i say on the matter with a pinch of salt, lol.

Nice one Dave,I bet you have the silly grin factor! Looks very well made. The MM is mad pickup isn't it, i bet it sounds good through your Engl. Look forward to hearing about what you think of your new axe!

Mine is still being made which is ok as I'm still saving to pay it off but I think of it every day!
