Any MK50H users here?
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:15:18 PM »
Are there any other Cornford MK50H users here? I just bought one and have a couple of questions:

1. The presence control seems to do nothing until about 8, is this normal? I am only trying things at home so volume lowish which might have an impact I suppose.

2. The treble control makes VERY little difference to the tone. I presume this is correct as it does just sound right anyway, but am surprised how little it does. Bass and middle have much more range, though still not that big. Big enough though as most amps allow you to dial in a horrible sound if you try.

Can't comment specifically on the Cornford but having used a JCM 800 for yonks I can say that most "traditional" passive tone stacks dont actually effect the tone all that much so I suspect that aspect is normal...depends where in the signal chain the tone stack is as well, haven't got a cornford schematic to check.

The presence is a control on the negative feedback of the amp, it can be quite a subtle change.

The Speed Twin's tone controls were passive too, but had much more change to the sound.

It also has presence control, but the change happened around the control not just at the end.

Using some of the Cornford recommended settings for certain sounds, the presence settings make no difference to the sound at all as all have a presence setting of less than 8 (where it all seems to happen).

the tone controls on my cornford are very much the same they're not the most touch sensative but they work it's got a basic tone that u can dial around but the tone is so good u might aswell just leave everything at 12..

I know what you mean. I find the treble control on most amps pretty useless anyway, much away from 12 o'clock and it buggers things up.
The mid seems to be the control with the strongest change, but then that makes sense as it is the mid which is most important guitar-wise.
