Gibson dirty fingers - BK replacement
« on: July 14, 2007, 05:58:21 PM »
Well any clues?
i have an old XR1 and the local guitar tech says that my pickups are low output  :?  whereas they look like the stock dirty fingers, i assume the magnet may have died.
So it leaves an excuse for some BKPs...

Isnt the Cold Sweat a development of the Dirty Finger?

There are several things that usually get done to Dirty Fingers to make them sound better. One is remove the two flanking magnets which cleans the tone up, and the second is to remove the copper screening tape from around the coils which plays hell with the inductance. The answer is Cold Sweat!

I have a set of Cold Sweats in my Ibanez and can confirm that they are awesome. The tone I get is far more than merely a facsimile of the Dirty Fingers so my guitar retains its own character but it is undeniable that it has a very 'Gibson' feel to it. I've always loved the tone of a Gibson but I've never really thought of it as my ideal guitar, partly because I prefer double cut guitars and partly because I don't have that much spare cash! With Cold Sweats in mine I feel that my guitar will stand up to any comparison with a Gibson favourably. It 'out-Gibsons' a Gibson if you like.  :D

You can get them like this, but they will have more bass (I know because I have a Nailbomb with double screws and a regular Nailbomb, so I could compare them).
So many pickups, so little time

Yes - although perhaps not with that exact precision :) - just state aged coils in the purchase box (or phone BKP up when you are making your order!)

hey, i've got an xr-1 too, obviously with the dirty fingers. those pickups in that guitar actually sound really good. i put a miracle man in the bridge in my v and it sounds almost identical to the bridge dirty finger in the xr-1.
now obviously they're too completely different guitars, but i'm saying that you have some real nice pickups in there. i'd leave them stock and put some BK's in a different guitar if you have another.

another XR1.... whoaa lol haven't seen many

well i am led to believe the pickup has degraded, sure it sounds ok, but it doesn't match what it should do, and by no means is giving the listed output. I am heading for a MM for another guitar everntually... all in the good name of promoting UK business  :D
