Loss of power on Boss Distortion pedal

I own a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal that seems to have lost its power. When i first got the pedal i couldnt even have the level at the maximum because it was too loud compared to the clean signal. However recently i can have the level up to the maximum level and it is only about the same level as the clean signal if not sometimes quiter. Ive tried changing batteries countless times and even plugging it into the mains but with no effect.i think there must be something else wrong, Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
Cheers,
Gaz.

Could be the Boss, but could it also be the amp, tubes, cable, guitar?

I had a similar problem with mine... But, it was more of a drainage issue. The Boss pedals suck the life out of batteries quick, so i got a DC plug for it and it did the trick, but i don't think this is what you are talking about...
