RYs in an sg??
« on: July 29, 2007, 04:56:32 PM »
lets say im going for a huge sound with alot of low mid growl going on, and i like my chugs to sound airy and open rather than then overly tight and compressed.

i primary play hardcore with a southern rock vibe. my sg standard is tuned to drop c and runs through a soldano avenger 50 head. the avenger is the seemingly darker and gainier version of the SLO, i find it crazy clear even with the gain to 11.

what do you guys think?

ps: i bought paypal funds from a really shady seller, he sent me an additonal 312 USD for some reason. should i refund it or get somemore BKPS?

I think RYs would work fine in an SG, but they're more about upper mids than low mids.  They're tight too.  I don't think they'll give you the sound you're describing.

Not sure what to suggest instead though, maybe something more vintage sounding - is hardcore with a southern rock vibe a COC kind of thing?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I have a set of RYs in my Guild S-100 and they're very nice!  They are like a vintage set with a lot of balls and really cut through in a band situation.
BKPS: Cryogenic Apache set, Mule set, Riff Raff, Stormy Monday.

holy diver will sound fatter and fuller
but tim usually recommends the warpig for sgs if you're looking for really heavy tones
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I agree that the RY may sound a little bright for what you're after. Either the Nailbomb or the Holy Diver should work well and if you really want the sound to cut through the wood of your guitar, go with Cold Sweats.

Well, a Cold Sweat is the lowest output of the hot pups if you were thinking of going that route. It will give you plenty of the growl that you're after, has bags of tone, can sound both vintage and modern and the ceramic magnet will cut through beautifully.

If you wanted lower output then the Mule is certainly good and I'm always impressed with the Black Dogs as well.
