hey

was rerecording a clip i did a couple days ago, and have recorded a backing track to go with it...[backing track] but when i put the main recording on top of the backing track[mixed track], it just doesn't sound right, gets all messy and confusing

is this something to do with my playing or my mixing??

First off, I don't hear anything 'bad' there.

One thing you might want to try, however, is to get the bass under control as it sounds a bit woofy and not tight or tuneful. You do this by using compression and EQ.

hmmm... didn't think about the bass actually [i take it we're talking about the bass guitar, not the EQ bass ? ]

Yes, bass guitar. :)

Use a vintage model plug in if you have one, like a Neve or Urei. It will work wonders for the woofiness. You will also need to apply a parametric EQ to the bass.

HINT: Generally speaking, you do not want to have identical frequencies running on all instruments. Typically, you want the kick drum and bass guitar to go the deepest. I would high pass the guitar tracks at 80Hz and see how it sounds. If they are still muddy, try edging up the high pass 10Hz at a time until you are happy, but don't go over 150Hz.

If you ADD 60Hz on the kick drum, for example, make sure you CUT the same amount on the bass guitar, and then fine tune to taste.

Subsequently, you can drop a lot of the mids and upper mids from the bass guitar to make more room for the electric guitars.

Mixing is a very complex thing to explain in text, and there really is no right or wrong way to do it.

i think the problem is that the backing and lead tunes just don't WORK together :? not at the beginning anyways; later on it sounds more natural, and i really enjoyed it. Also the timing is a wee bit sketchy in places mate, so you might want to practice with a metronome.

yeh my timing's always been awful lol... and i dunno bout not working together, i put it together in guitar pro and it sounded ok to me in there, so i think it's just the way i'm playing bits of it is throwing the overall sound off
