choosing MY bkp :D
« on: August 14, 2007, 02:30:35 AM »
okay guys, i've lurked here for long enough and the GAS is killing me. I'm getting a bkp. here comes the longwinded post...

My problem is that i dont know which one to get.
I currently play lots of stoner rock, ranging from the light (priestess, queens of the stone age) to the rediculously heavy (electric wizard... others) and everything in between (witch, atomic bitchwax, boris).

My current setup is eastwood gp (with alnico super2 copies) --> maxon od808 --> marshall 30th anniversary.
If anybody has experience with super 2's they know that theyre trebly as hell and cut like a knife, and i love em. My problem is the lack of mids and bass
So i need a pickup with heavy as shite bass, and punchy as shite mids. And i want enough high articulation to bite and get me nice clarity on the high strings when i solo. My main thing is that my amp lacks bass and especially mids, so i want to try to get some more.
I'll be putting this pickup into my next GAS purchase which will be either a schecter tempest, or a bcr mockingbird: either way it will be mahogany body and neck, maple top.

further details: i'm only getting a bridge pickup for now.

thanks guys
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

Warpig!

i'm afraid the warpig will get muddy or not have enough highs or mids... would there be a way to get more highs out of it? like say... having it uncovered and using different size allen bolts for the slugs?

My reply was brief, but that doesn't mean I was being flippant. I would not recommend a pickup that I thought would get muddy.

For doom you basically want an alnico Warpig.  I've got some clips in the players section playing some Electric Wizard with Nailbombs through my old 6505, I think it's a great tone but having owned the WP, I'd go with 'em for someone playing that style primarily.

okay, but doom will only be a part of what i play. I'll be doing lots of it is quick stoner riffing. warpig still appropriate? i just dont want my 16th and 32nd notes to blend together into mud

I don't think I've ever heard any of the pickups in the BKP range get what a normal person considers as "muddy" Unless your amps not up to scratch - I can't imagine BKPs (especially the contemporary ones) falling short.

If you want something surgically tight - You could consider the MM but the low end won't be nearly as pronounced as the Warpig.

I don't think any BKP's do "mud" as you put it.

then you have come to the right place!!!  i would go for the ceramic warpig rather than alnico if you are worried about note definition but persoanlly i would rather have the alnico ones and stop worrying about note definition because it wont be a problem .

For more versatility and a tighter bass end for fast riffing you could do worse than a Nailbomb - I've got one in an Explorer and it does it all as far as heavy styles go.

i thought about it, and i'm going to avoid the ceramic pickups. Looks like its guna be a warpig in mah geeetar.

Now for the options, i'm going for uncovered, but what should i get for slugs in order to gain more high end and attack? Allen bolts? screws? plain slugs?  The reason i want more high end is because i'm goign to be running it through a 33' cable, which will definately suck alot of it out.

Thanks guys, you're all a HUGE help.
