Black Dogs in PRS Custom22???
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:10:21 PM »
I love the pickups in my PRS but cant help but think that maybe some black dogs would be better suited for me.
I play pretty much everything from folk to Hard Rock to Metal (metallica) via jazz and blues.

I have a very percussive playing style like to scratch the strings palm mute and add harmonics everywhere! i mix all the above genres into one.

I want something that really kicks you when needed, cleans up well (using volume knob) has huge vocal like lead voice that can cut anything and have a lovely liquid neck pickup.

Any help would be great i am using a Cornford MK50 with mullards running into a 2x12" with celestion golds

If it any use my fave guitar tone are from jimmy page, david gilmour, Satch, guthrie govan and hendrix.

also do you recommend using alnico IV in the neck and alnico V in the bridge.

Thanks for any help, Rob

I actually prefer A5 in the neck as it's clearer in the bass end.  In the bridge I like A4 as it's warmer than A5 and makes the bridge position sound nice and phat.

just need to add that i do quite a bit of 8 finger two hand tapping among other things so they need to be sensitive enough to pick that up with ease.

I've got the Alnico V Black Dog in the neck with a Cornford Hurricane, and it is the nicest neck pickup i've ever heard.

I've ordered a matching Black Dog Bridge and asked tim about the V vs IV bridge choice, and left it up to him which he decides to build my pickup around.

But yea, Black Dog + Cornford = Sexy.

Tim advised the Alnico V as he said the hot wound Black Dog bridge pickup with an IV magnet might a bit flabby and muddy.

So seems BD's in Alnico V are the choice..
