I've gone wireless!
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:53:03 PM »
I've just picked up a Sennheiser Freeport wireless system from my local dealre for £125.  I'm doing a big gig over Bank Holiday weekend and wanted to take advantage of a big stage  :D

Sound quality is very good, fantastic for the money.  There is a difference when compared to my cables in that the wireless has a bit more treble and bit less mids.  It's quite a subtle difference and you can adjust your amp to suit it if you need too.  I have the transmitter on the lowest possible setting and the receiver output around 9/10 (which gives a slight signal boost).  Crystal clear sound in the same room as the amp, and no issues with reception as I walked around the house(!).  The receiver is housed in a metal case and looks sturdy enough for regular use.  The transmitter is plastic, but looks like it'll hold up OK.

For a laugh I went down to the bottom of my garden noodling away and it sounded superb!  Felt and looked very bizarre though!   :P

I'm going to try it out in rehearsal next week prior to the gig, but things are looking good so far.  If anyone's thinking of going wireless the Sennheiser Freeport looks like a great reasonable priced option.

Sounds sweet, nice buy!

One question though, what kind of delay is there compared with cables? I'm thinking for shred purposes :)

I didn't notice any delay at all, except when I was at the bottom of my garden and it took a fraction of a second for the sound to hit my ears!

I've been considering going wireless.  But I've heard that after the 'digital switch over' for the TV & radio all the frequencies are getting auctioned off.  Including the ones the current generation of wireless mics & guitar setups use.

Is there any truth in this?

Nice find Twinfan !

I've just looked up the specifications Will, and yes it is UHF, true Diversity with a choice of four switchable channels, in case the whole band gets one each !

I can feel the 'GAS' coming on.

All the best for the big weekend gig Twinfan !

That's not the wireless, that's the speed of sound, not that fast actually and if you're 10-20m away you can well feel the delay, would be the almost the same with a cable.

Yep, I know Mr Hunter.  It was funny as I've never experienced it before as I don't have cables that long!  I thought you might be interested as you were looking at wireless gear recently?  I'll let you know how it goes over the next few weeks of using it.

Thanks FF for the good wishes.  I hope you're keeping well?  :D

I don't know about this frequencies after switch off thing, but as FF says there are 4 channels on the Freeport so you should be able to find one that works for a gig.

Well, in theory yes, but I bought an X2 Digital for 125 EUR off ebay, perfect condition, awesome deal. It sounds spot on and is so easy to set up, no levels or anything, just plug and play. It doesn't do any comping or sth, 24 bit straight uncompressed audio. Sounds great and the receiver is the size of a boss pedal, so it fits on the pedal board.

It sends around 900MHz, which is why it's not officially allowed in Europe, but works great no interferences or anything ...

It sells for  299$ in US, I was lucky to get it for that in EUR, as it used to be 350$ until recently.

I got it recommended by the guys on www.rig-talk.com, then checked harmony central etc ... seems to have many fans in the US but not popular in Europe due to it not being available.

Sweet! I was thinking of going wireless but always thought that anything that was good would be around the £350 mark. Nice to know there's a good quality and less costly product on the market. :D
