My new BKP.
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:12:06 PM »
I got my new BKP on Wednesday and installed it the same day.
A while back I was going to ask Tim for something with a Holdsworth type tone then I noticed on Feline's site that someone had already made such an order, so a message to Tim followed by several weeks (months?) procrastination and I was ready to order.
It's 16.4k and AV, similar to a Holy Diver I think. I'm not sure how close it is to the SD Holdsworth sig pickup, it's obviously not exactly the same as SD don't scatterwind, it may infact be a double screw HD for all I know but the most important part is the tone...

The Fernandes I put it in has a loud acoustic sound but it sounds a bit banjoey, and I'd previously tried the stock pickup, a DM Fred and then a DM made IBZ F1 which is also double screw coil;
The first thing I noticed was how hot this pickup is, the notes just fly out. The bottom end is fat but tight, the midrange is big and detailed and the treble is full and clear. As I was tuning up I had some fun playing BLS style riffs in B with gauge 9 strings, even then it sounded huge and tight.
I can get great Holdsworth style warm but clear cleans with my POD XT, his lead tones are much trickier but I reckon I'm a step closer with this pickup than any of the others.
The guitar has a switch that let's me bypass the volume & tone circuit and go straight to the jack. The vol & tone are 250k (controversial!) CTS pots that are cryo treated, and all the wiring and output jack are also cryo.

Big thanks to Tim and the crew for making great pickups and turning yet another guitar into a tone monster!

That guitar looks awesome, I thought I'd gone off superstrats but not when they look as cool as that  8) Can we expect clips any time soon?

Cheers for the comments chaps.
I can make clips but I'm not sure about posting them cos as far as I know it's not an official BKP model and I don't know what name to give it in the title box :?
But maybe I can try Soundclick or something like that.

You can most definitely use the clips forum here!

Just put 'BK prototype' or something in the description.

Can't wait to hear it!!

Doesn't the double row of screws give the pickup more bass and smoother mids if I remember correctly?

I would be interested to know how this does compare to the Holy Diver.

That looks awesome, be even better with a Floyd imo, but cool nonetheless.

That guitar is very complicated by my standards. PDT_008

Floyd would spoil that. Even better with a hardtail ;)

the guitar is nice, just got me wondering about this -

do you feel you can tell the difference with the cryo treated electronic parts in a guitar?

I know it makes a lot of sense for high high performance stuff like tools and race car engines and apparently it helps tubes function better but i havnt tried those yet

I am trying to be open to these new fangled things but i must admit this struck me as a bit of a marketing gimmick and i would be really interested to hear real life experiences of these things to know if they are worthwile.

I saw another pickup manufacturer offering cryogenically treated pickups and this really struck me as marketing BS.  For a start i am fairly sure you cant super cool then super heat a pickup without serious damage to the magnet, bobbin and insulation on the pickup wire!! and why does a pickup need to be super hard anyway - maybe a bridge or tuner posts!  trem baseplates with cryo treated knife edges, that might make more sense
