I am still undecided on a new amp and am really confused - basically i want a versatile amp, possible two channels - one for clean and one for dirty - with nice cleans but can also do the heavy stuff - nothing too heavy i am not into chuggy metal at all but i do like post hardcore type metal. My favourite tones are Fightstar (but alas not enough money for a triple rec), Slash's leads as well as rhythms.

I want an amp that can give me the rhythm as in this, this is definitely the most important tone i'd like to emulate - i want that growl :

I have the same pickups as this clip so shouldn't be too hard with the right amp

Just very smooth mellow clean

As I said my guitar has the Steve Steven's Rebel Yell BKP pups in it - can't remember exact but their DC is hot PAF around 8k for neck and 14k for bridge I think

Mahogany body and neck with Rosewood fretboard - set neck - tune-o-matic bridge with coil tapping (so versatility there) - so basically very les paul like but not as heavy

Probably anything up to around 800GBP is my budget

I tried to give you guys all the info I could to help advise me on this if you need ny other info just ask - help much appreciated from a very confused guitarist.

I would also like it to have a master volume so i can practice at bedroom levels with it as well.

And I am still undecided between my preference for modern american voicing amp or a vintge british voiced amp, so maybe one possible of doing both.

you should get a used amp within your £800 budget, try...

* Engl Powerball
* Peavey 5150+
* Boogie Single Recto (might get lucky on price)

There's a Mark IV on ebay I spotted recently. It's only at £400 and there's no reserve. You might get lucky on it. It'll do everything very nicely.

thanks for the advice so far guys, just a note I don't think I particular want a metal amp as I like nice cleans as well.

And sorry since I posted a lot of clips up there than might take a while to check out, the two most important ones are these two - if i can can get an amp that does these two tones I woul be extremely happy?

Well, Fightstar use Peavey 5150's (or at least charlie does), so for that I'd recommend an ENGL because you then get the awesome clean sound too. I have a Fireball and I can nail Charlies sound (EMG's help) plus at the click of a button I have all the clean goodness I would want. ENGL's have better clean channels than many low-gain amps I've heard. My Dad owns a Fender Blues Junior and he's pretty envious of the sound I get from the FB. The Fireball is pretty damn all-out-modern-metal sounding on the 'Ultra Gain' channel though. I would imagine that with your pickups it wouldn't be so 'metal' sounding. Maybe check out the ENGL Thunder as that has more variation in sounds from very sparkly clean to blues rock to all-out metal mayhem. I had one and loved it but I just wanted the Fireball as I mainly play Melodic Death Metal-esque stuff, so something even tighter was needed. But in my opinion ENGL beats everything in the price catagory. RRP on the Thunder is about £550 (comes in head and combo versions) from www.thomann.de and the Fireball is £700. I got both for around £200 less than those prices on ebay. HTH, James

ummm, Charlie uses a Mesa Boogie Triple Rec... where did the Peavey suggestion come from?

I am a bit nervous about these 'modern metal' amps since I really do want the nice cleans like in the orange rockerverb clip - as well as the vintage rock sound of GnR

There really aren't any other amps I've tried that have the Roccaforte's unique tonal structure.

As for versatility in a 2 channel amp, you might want to look into a Rivera Knucklehead. Exceptional tone and loads of versatility!!

Thanks for the help - If I can get them two tones i showed earlier I'll be happy as larry, it'll be a shame if rocafortes are the only amps that can do that - also a shame that so many boutique amps seem to have a lack of versatility as I do want to be able to go from the nice cleans to the dirty at the flick of a footswitch.

As said I am a bit weary of these high-gain amps since It's not really me.

marshall 30th anniversary. I just tweaked mine around and i can nail ALL of those sounds.

To reproduce that roccaforte clip, i needed to put my maxon in though. I run my puppy pretty quiet so it keeps a fairly loose attack, need to juice the volume for more tightness :)

With all due respect, there is NO WAY a Marshall with a Maxon OD can even come close to, let alone nail, Roccaforte's tone. I don't care for Doug Roccaforte as a person (long story), but his amps are absolute killers. There are 4 Roccaforte amps in my rehearsal studio, and I know the tone intimately, as I often switch between a Diezel VH-4 or Roccaforte High Gain 80 at rehearsal.
