I know a few members on here have just got them back - And I also know that they're totally irrelevant and don't matter, etc - But anyway, how have results been - And what A Levels or GNVQs/BTecs etc have people applied for?

Mine were 6 As, 3 Bs, and a C - Respectively As in the subjects I'm good at, and cared about, Bs in the irrelevent subjects - Including Music :p, and a C in the subject which mattered the least imo - English Lit.

I managed to get into the Uber prestigious Further Maths class in my school even though I only had an A in maths and would normally need an A*, so I'm pretty happy about my results - Also doing Chemistry Physics and Philosophy A levels next term.

Nice one. Maths+Phys+Chem the best combo :twisted: Good job getting into Further Maths too. Just a bit concerned though, Further Maths moves very fast so if you didn't find GCSE Maths a breeze, there's a chance you may get left behind. Especially as you're taking 3 more subjects which means you won't have much free time. Good luck! :)

I got a very similar set of results.

6 A's

4 B's

2 C's

i think... give or take a couple i cant remember haha. (slightly intoxicated at the moment).

The entire GCSE course pissed me off as i ended up doing about 12+ in the end... our school forces you to take half-courses e.t.c. so i did all the standard choices and manditorys, as well as French, Statistics, P.E half course, R.E half course. e.t.c.

anyway, I had a 6th form interview and got secured a place doing my favourite subjects (i'm the opposite end of the spectrum to you- very english based and not too keen on the Sciences).

so my A-Levels will be something like:

English (of some combo)
Politics (i don't care- i love it)
final two places of History, Geography, Biolgy, Maths. a combo of those.

I'm rambling.

anyway- i admire you guys with the whole Maths + Chem + Physics thing... there's no way i could hack that.

I know someone who intends to be a doctor/surgeon doing Maths + all sciences though. Ouch.

2 JDC:righteousindignation: That's the most bollocks I have ever read.
GCSEs have gotten no easier - if anything they are harder than when they were instated. The reason for the increased higher pass grades is that the papers don't run on set mark boundaries but there are a set number who have to get a certain grade so 5% will get an A* for example. These boundaries make it so that the board can rate their papers for difficulty and amend them for the next year. Exams are not easer, they are more balanced.

I really feel shafted by the system - I got a D in music despite having all my work fully notated and arranged ad completing the work half a year before anyone else in the group - causing me to spend a long time doing absolutely nothing for the rest of the year so that the bloke I was doing my ensemble piece with had time to finish his coursework and even then he forgot his part 10 minutes before we were set to record.
I consistently topped the exams and only several people in the group were really likely to do any better than me.
I have an interview for my sixth form application and I am really going to push for music as I put twice the effort into that than I put into any of my other grades.

the thing is its easy as adults to look at GCSE's and say they are easier now. I didnt get any A's when i did mine but i am fairly sure i could easily get a's at almost all the subjects now. Thats not because they are easier, its because i am more focused than i was when i did my GCSE's. If i choose to do a course now it receives a lot more focus and energy than the stuff i was made to do at school!

What people forget is that GCSE's are designed to test 16 year olds, i am sure we all remember how distracting life was when we were 16! For me i waass more interested in girls, guitars and music than i was any of my GCSE's

OK, so why have GCSE's results got better.

1. Better teaching (I have to say that!!)
2. We put far too much stress on children to do well at their GCSE's -so we end up with better reuslts than i ever got, but also more stressed 16 year olds that are not always emotionally mature enough to deal with that stress.

GCSE's dont really matter that much but we dont tell you that till you are at least 17 :P Even if you get bad results schools and colleges are legally bound to provide FE courses for you - its actually a discriminatory offense if they dont! In that way entry requirements can only ever be used as a guide and not a legal requirement for course entry.

For us, the RE course was a full course and it was optional - A couple of my mates took it - PE was also a full course, and again, was optional.

French was also an optional for us, we were all forced to do a language though - Either Spanish French or German - I did Spanish.

I think we did statistics, but I don't have any results from that - It was just some work that was given to us during our maths classes - We couldn't differentiate from what was "Maths" and what was "Statistics".

In our school we weren't forced to do any subjects other than Maths, English and Science - Although we were forced to do categories, ie, 1 Language, 1 technology, 1 creative subject, and 1 humanity, and then 1 extra subject of our choosing.
