Whoa - serious shots there!

Gary Moore must be having a fit if they're out in public.  He loved that guitar so it must be like seeing your ex-missus in Playboy...

Someone's going to have to clue me in: why did Gary sell it? Not only was it a one in a million guitar, it was a piece of history, and if I remember correctly he didn't even sell it to a guitarist!

I am afraid to say that floor covering is not pleasant. The guitar, however, has that mojo going.

The story I heard was that he wracked up alot of debt after having to cancel alot of dates on his last tour due to illness and that he had to sell the guitar to make the money back.

Could be right, could be wrong, but that's what I heard/read somewhere

They're Sprague "bumblees", probably the original 50's caps.  Vintage Les Paul dudes love 'em.

That's what I heard too.  It was very much a regretable sale.

Great shots.  Hotel room floor?  On the road?  Sale negotiation meeting?

Very sad, if true.  I thought he'd have insurance for the possibility of cancelled dates due to illness.

I seriously doubt he sold it to cover debts from cancelled tour dates.  The story going round at the time of the sale was that he thought it didn't play as nice as his other '59 and there was a tasty offer on the table to sell.

The details are the sale are also a bit dodgy - seems the person he sold it to was just a front for the 'real' buyer (a dealer) and he wasn't too happy at all once these details surfaced.

Do a search over on the LPF - theres a LONG thread on that story.

Also didn't it's neck get snapped? I think I heard something about the LP being in Gary's boot and someone crashed into him, snapping the headstock.

Or am I making that up?

Nope, you're not making that one up - someone rear-ended him on the way to a session and the neck broke at the headstock.

There was another story that the guitar wa a bit of a liability becasue it cost so much to insure.

Basically he couldn't really get playing it for real and some of his copies played better too, so I suppose, it made sence to free up some cash.

Though from his reaction I think he would rather have done without selling it in the long run.
