What pickups for alder 7 stringer?
« on: September 14, 2007, 05:35:41 PM »
Hi,

I was planning on getting a Dean Rusty Cooley sig model in the next couple of months and the only thing that bothers me with the specs is that it has EMGs.  I've had EMGs before and really hated the sound.  I was thinking I might swap the pickups if I buy it.

I currently have a Schecter Hellraiser(mahogany body and neck) with a Nailbomb set and I love the sound I get from it.

What I am looking for basically is a pickups that will get me a tight sound(especially on the lowest string) and have tonal characteristics that will go well with an alder body and give me a similar sound to my Schecter.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In which way do you think alder sounds different to mahogany?(I know they are different woods and have different caracteristics but what do you think is the main difference?)

alder has more attack, less sustain, a lot less body, spiker highs, tight bass, but not much midrange
mahogany sounds smoother, has more sustain and a lot fuller on mids and bass
i had 3 or 4 guitars in alder and 4 in mahogany
passive pickups respond very different in each wood, especially talking about BKPs as they are very sensitive

Yeah that's for sure, but it's a mahogany body and neck with Nailbombs in it.  It has a very focused and present tone that has quite a lot of midrange to it from what I can see as a difference with some other guitars(mainly basswood guitars).  I don't know if it helps a bit, but that's about what I can tell from comparing with other guitars

Unless they both have EMGs, then you could put it on a 2mm piece of plywood and it would sound the same.

My first thoughts was a 7 string Nailbomb, and maybe that would still work for you.  Perhaps a 7 string Cold Sweat, Miracle Man or Warpig would get the job done too, I don't know enough of what you are looking for....
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

not exactly
they get the same tone with EMGs, but different voicings
mahogany sounds thicker and full
