I wouldn't call Turisas something like that, they have a violin player and an accordion player, who else has that, more to the point where do you find a metal playing accordion player?!?!
So they are doing something different imo.

Metal accordion is certainly fairly individual, but the style in which they operate isn't particularly.

I'd like to hear a band which is far and way totally unique in its style, like gogol bordello- once you've heard a few songs, there's no way you could mistake them for anyone else. If you took away the accordion, the violin, and the Ukrainian singing, they would still sound unique. to a relative outsider such as myself, a lot of metal bands sound very similiar.

Well in the case of violin I would mention Nazareth.

Other rock violin I would suggest searching for Nash the Slash, Dave Swarbrick and Ric Sanders other bands such as The Who, All About Eve, Fairport Convention, The Mission & Slade for one (don't judge them from their hit singles) used the violin in the rock / folk rock / hard rock genres

As for accordian, I would say never mention those in any discussion involving musical instruments.

korpiklaani have been doing it for years ;)  and their accordion player does play metal tunes such as run to the hills, the trooper, angel of death etc etc on it hehe

as for the violin, it's been videly used in metal. especially power metal

Oh yeah i forgot about them!
I was thinking about other folk/battle bands like Ensiferum who just use keyboards for it.

I just don't think you can call such a band like Turisas or Korpiklaani or whatever just heavy metal, it would be good if we could, but nowadays we can't.

My first instrument was the button-keyed accordian (none of your piano-keyed stuff for me, oh thank you know), and it has been on a stage with a few metal bands for laughs. Surprisingly good blues instrument too.

It can sound shockingly decent miked up, going through a small coterie of pedals and a JCM800.

In my first year at Uni my mate played the accordion and I remember him figuring out riffs from Metallica's Black Album.

it's a very versatile instrument. can be used for anything, blues, bluegrass, folk, metal, pop, you name it. it has its unique voice that not many people like though

The way i see it is, it sounds like 'going into battle music' and that's what it is supposed to be so just call it battle metal.
