Hi,

Let me introduce myself first since im new, im Henk from Holland, 'metalhead gone tonefreak' or something in that general direction. I play a setup of a couple of Gibsons pushed trough some real vintage greenbacks for way to long, so im pretty much looking for some new inspiration. From what ive read here untill now im pretty sure ill come up with some new interesting ideas in no time.

Since i have become a working man and father of 3 kids i always seem to have way too little time to play, but if i do its mostly set up in these two ways.

ES125T semi-acoustic with P90 Neck, Marshall Bluesbreaker RI, Cable. Set Volume of the guitar to 8 and look for a nice edgy blues sound, sit down on the couch with a nice whiskey.

or

LP with HOT bridge pu(mostly use 500T), Stompbox 'oldschool' overdrive (prefer the japan made Boss OD-1), any amp with a vintage sounding -not cruchy- drivechannel, cabinet with 4x12" celestion greenbacks. Set your guitar to full volume and look for a nice moderate vintage rocksound ala free, set your stombox OD to boost, finetune it to the harmonics and sustain needs (which can get HUGE very easily, not that thats bad by the way

), i generally set the level to 14:00 and the drive to 10:00. Works wonders after those stressfull days at work.

I would be glad to hear about what setups you guys prefer, after work or whenever

Welcome to the forum. You are obviously a more experienced play than myself so I'm not even going to try to give you advice, but thanks for posting as I look forward to reading the reply's on this one!

It would depend on the kind of day I had but, at the moment, the first option would be my choise. Although I might swap the whisky for a beer.

Greetings! I'm loving the whisky/guitar combo, a man after my own heart. I sometimes replace the whisky with red wine :)

For me, my usual after work setup is:

* Gibson '61 reissue SG with vibrola (stock except for 50s style wiring)
* Orange Tiny Terror (volume at 10 o'clock, gain and tone at 1 o'clock)
* Marshall 4x12 with an X-pattern of G12H Heritage and V30 speakers

Hi Henk - welcome to the forum...you anywhere near Spikenisse? My cousin lives there so Ive been over a few times :)

I'm afraid the majority of my noodling is done unplugged, unless I have the house to myself, in which case I can wheel the amps out, stand up and get fierce :)

After a stressful day I come home, grab my trusty Schecter Ultra III or Ibanez Artcore and plug into a Roland BluesCube 2x10" combo. I don't usually play through effects in the house, and the Roland tends to be easier to get a consistent sound with at low volumes than my Marshall.

On the occasional ultra-stressful evening when it all seems to be going wrong around me, I have been known to pick up the Schecter Tempest Special that's tuned down to C, whack it into the Marshall and let everyone know that "DOOOOM" is the word of the day. :)

@ kevincurtis. I live near Enschede, thats in the east of Holland, so nowhere near Spijkernisse.

@Twinfan. Ow yeah i imagine that would probably give a great attack on the 57 classic pafs KARANGGG

. What do you think about the overdrive of the orange? Does it break up too soon at your setting?

@ Ailean. As far as experience is consearned, i have got enough experience to know that there are always bigger and better fish in the pond, if you got something to add to this thread, just go right ahead!

For all my amp power, pedals and pickups... after work I like nothing more than sitting down with my acoustic and keeping it mellow. 8)

I find the Orange gives a great overdrive. Set between 1:30 and 2 o'clock on the gain setting (just as the second stage kicks in) is the real sweet spot. I use the amp in rehearsals too (fully cranked) and it's great for "classic rock". Great little amp for not a lot of money, and seems to suit all guitars.

Welcome Henk. I have Fenders and therefore my options are all of the single coil variety. I think my best way of unwinding is reaching for my Telecaster and using the 4th position on the 4 way selector and then playing slide as that seems to calm the soul for me. I am not that good at it it yet but it is beginning to come together well enough for me to try it live sometime soon. But equally I get my acoustic out and try something more mellow-for example, working on an acoustic version of the Crowded House track "Silent House" at the moment.

I have to say I'm probably similar to Twinfan (I have a TT which I love), but I can't get the gain up that high with volume at 10.

Best I can do in my flat with an Orange 1x12 is Gain around 2-3 o'clock and volume at about 9-10 o'clock.

I'd love to go higher but I don't fancy getting an ASBO, especially as one of my neighbours is a cop :)

Nothing I love more than plugging my Strat straight into my little 15 watt Vox hybrid amp and noodling away. The action is so low and everything feels so easy to play.

Oh and I hate you guys. I need a new amp and the Tiny Terror keeps cropping up in conversations. How restrictive is the single tone control though?

Exactly. Unfortunately I like control, and worry about being constricted.

Forget about guitars though, nothing beats coming home from work or uni and having a litre of Somerfield's cheapest luxury ice-cream. 1/4 of the way through, I'll keep you all posted. I'm going to town on this bad boy.

ok, off topic, but as badger hates me I'll respond :)

I don't find the single tone control restrictive coz I never use it :) I use the tone pot on the guitar or a pedel. The TT shines because it is so simple, pedel boards are for making life more complicated :)
