Help me please with vintage output neck humbucker decision?
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:04:53 AM »
I'm considering getting a new pickup for the neck poistion of my Tokai LP.  It already has a Mule bridge (it's the middle guitar in the pic below):

The new neck pickup will be used for extensive neck soloing.  I'm after a pickup that will work well with medium to high gain and it must balance well with the bridge Mule, but not be too thick sounding.  I like clarity in a neck humbucker yet it must be smooth and full.  The tone ballpark I'm looking at is Gary Moore, Slash, Mark Knopfler etc - classic rock/blues singing, organic tone.  I will be getting the pickup with an aged raw nickel cover and potted coils.

I think my options are:

* AII Stormy Monday
* AIV Stormy Monday
* AII Mule
* AIV Mule

What do you guys think will give me the tone I want and balance well with the bridge Mule???

i have a mule bridge / stormy monday neck in one of my Vs

i must say that both pickups rock, but when i set the mids on my amp up for the mule (overdriven tone), and then flick to the stormy monday the mids in the driven stormy monday are lacking as the SM is a more transparent pickup. this annoys me slightly.

if it were me i'd definately go for some sort of mule, i'll change my SM for a mule one day. i'm in love with the clean tone of it though.

Is your Mule A2 or A4?  I would stick with the same magnet Mule if it is A2.  If it is A4 and you want a thicker lead tone, look at the Abraxas neck.
So many pickups, so little time

The Mule is AIV Phil.  And it's not really thicker that I want - it's smooth and clear.

I want a 'bucker not a P90 thanks Ted  ;)

I'm leaning towards an AIV Stormy Monday?

When I got my SM neck, Tim said the AII magnets he currently has in stock are so good that there wasn't really any advantage to choosing AIV instead (or words to that effect, sorry if I'm misquoting badly).

I suppose it must make some difference though.

Ha ha - cheers Joe.  They're great  :)

Phil - do you reckon the AII SM neck will get what I want?

Hmm, Abraxas eh?  Will that not overpower the Mule bridge?

Not at all in my estimation. Smooth, full, singing lead tone = Abraxas.

NOTE, the Abraxas neck tone is NOT one I would choose for myself, I prefer a more cutting sound. But it will still do what you are looking for.

I tend to agree with gwEm, actually, Dave - for me personally, I'd prefer just a little more push in the midrange for a really fat, singing tone.  But I like the neck to be really sweet and warm, even bordering on the soupy.

It definitely has the clarity you want.  The SM neck is bright enough that I find there's not enough difference in tone between it and the BD bridge in my V (actually, on reflection I'm not sure if the SM's too bright or the BD's too dark, but I'd like more contrast).

Which isn't to say it's not full-sounding, it's surprisingly powerful.  I half-expected it to be a bit weeny compared with the BD, but that's not the case at all.  I had to set it further from the strings than the BD to get the volume to balance.

I may be wrong, but I think you generally like a brighter neck tone than I do, so it might be just what you're looking for.

As for the other suggestions, I love the Abraxas neck, and I'm a bit surprised it's not too hot for the Mule bridge, but I'm sure Ben's right.  I seem to remember reading that it's based on an AIV version of the Emerald, or did I imagine that?

I don't think the AII/AIV combo works as well with both pickups as the AV/AIV or 2 AIV.  I seem to remember Tim telling me that a long time ago.  The Stormy Monday is one of my favourite pickups, but it is more Kossoff/Bloomfield/Clapton than the guys you list.  The AIV Mule is more that territorry.  However, I think the Abraxas will do it when you switch from the bridge to the neck pickup, without having to change settings on your amp.   Remember that this is based on the early Santana tone not the compressed to hell and back that he has now.
