It's a quiet day here at work, and no-one's listening, so I'll share a little secret ;)
There's a rumour that a certain Mr Wez Venables is building something a bit different in his little workshop. I had a spare chunky Tele neck knocking about, which he now has in his possession, and he's cooking up a little spicy something that the Rev Willie G might enjoy.......
First off, a couple of nice planks arrive:
Which are then glued up and left in clamps:
I wonder what type of wood that is? What pickups and switching arrangement will it have? What about the finish? What will the guitar be called? :?
Hmmmmm........ 8)

Something like this?

Hmmm, I have a pretty good idea of the answers to the first three questions.....
-
so post them philly - i want to see if people can figure out what TF's going for before the the details are shared
-
Slight problem - I've already told Phil what's cooking in the pot!!!!
Something like this?

That pic is HUGE!
You've got the very rough and general idea in that it will be a single pickup guitar, so well done!

I can't think how to hint without giving away the answers...
This might give a bit of a clue:

You're not a million miles away there Lew!
Body binding - yep!
Single pickup in a Tele body - yep!
Then Phil kicks in with this:
But the colour's all wrong and what's the body made out of????????????

Inspired by......................???????

Pine? That's the sexiest looking Tele ever...needs a trem though.
Anyluck with that Ibby btw? I spoke to him several days ago and he said he was still thinking about it  sorry if it's a non starter.
-
Nope Ratrod, no pinstriping! And it's not pine either :)
Lew - not heard form Mark for a few days so I assume it's off.
Back to the custom build, and I've always liked the look of these.....

If thats going to be a hot-rod Esquire a la Rev. Gibbons then I am jealous. Very jealous. Would love one of them to be my 'rocker' guitar (maybe with a bigsby) to complement my Gibsons too.
Can't wait to see what this will be!
Paddy
-
Are we still guessing? PDT_008
-
never getting a custom guitar, eh, dave? I know, I know, it's using a neck you already have, but still... you'll get there eventually, i reckon.
-
It's about as close to a custom as I'll get I think!!!
Anyone ready for the full spec of the Fecker "La Cabronita" yet?? ;)
-
It's about as close to a custom as I'll get I think!!!
Anyone ready for the full spec of the Fecker "La Cabronita" yet?? ;)
Yes indeedy
-
Is it simply a black, P90 Esquire?
'Cause that'd be swish 8)
-
It's about as close to a custom as I'll get I think!!!
Anyone ready for the full spec of the Fecker "La Cabronita" yet?? ;)
yeah, go for it. what's the wood in the first post- alder?
-
Nope, it's not black and not P90'd and it's not Alder!
Full spec is:
Neck:
Warmoth Pro Series '59 Roundback in maple
Tele headstock
Maple board
Black dot inlays
Gotoh vintage style tuners in chrome
Fecker "La Cabronita" and Fecker Custom Shop decals
Body:
Two piece korina Tele
Top binding in white
White scratchplate (or maybe not, depends how the body looks when finished)
Back and sides finished in Natural
Top only finished in Blue Sparkle(!) :o 8)
Gotoh hardtail strat bridge with through body stringing
Rear routed for controls
Top routed for single bridge pickup
Chrome Gretsch knobs
Schaller chrome straplocks
Electrics:
TV Jones Filter'Tron Plus bridge pickup
Volume
Push/pull tone pot to give tone pot or fixed 'c--ked wah' effect
Les Paul style jack socket
I think that's everything! The pickup is what started the whole idea off when Wez posted it up for sale, combined with my left over neck. It was also inspired by the Fender Custom Shop La Cabronita Especial I posted earlier, plus I've been looking for something in Blue Sparkle for a little while :)
Basically, it's a cross of all these three!

The most amusing thread ever!!!!
PDT_002
-
Amusing? :?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess!
-
Sounds awesome!!! Hope you decide against the pickguard :P
-
I've got myself wanting a black P90 esquire now
-
i think the pickguard is a 'make once and see how it looks' kinda deal - whatever ends up being right for the guitar at the end of the day
-
i think the pickguard is a 'make once and see how it looks' kinda deal - whatever ends up being right for the guitar at the end of the day
Sure! I just don't like this pickguard, perhaps a new one could be great... But it's Twinfan's guitar, his opinion is what matter
-
Dude your guitar sounds sickkkk! I want to see it finished!
Although that black P90 LP is sex too
-
Very nice mate!
I love the blue sparkle.
Can you stand the wait?
-
is it a 7 string gold top rhoads V with triple humbuckers and massive switching combinations?
-
Should be cool 8)
So what's it going to be called? It's by Wez, so it'll start with a V probably, it's blue...
Got it... The Viagra!
:D
-
really i am just responsible for the body so it wont be getting a V name
Twinfan has another fecker decal so the headstock will read
Fecker "La Cabronita"
-
As Wez says, the decal will be a Fecker La Cabronita but I need to speak to him about getting his "W" logo on the body somewhere.
Afghan Dave - the wait is a bit torturous! Gonna be a month or so to do the body finish work alone!
-
my vanity is not so great that it needs to have my initials on it.... i dont do the john birch thing, he occasionaly modified gibsons and put his own logo on them. ok, some were heavy mods like new necks but there was also some less major mods that ended up with his logo.
anyway, definately not on the front of the body as i think it will distract from the blue. potentially on the scratchplate in a firebird style, possibly on the back behind the neck plate or ferrules. maybe just a pencil scribble in the cavitiy
-
Whatever you think Wez - it needs to be on there somewhere though :)
-
been having a play since i am bored at work
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/new/LACTF1.jpg)
-
i wish this laptop had something better than paint on it!!
i was considering that it might be fun to do a plate with a logo by starting with a clear bit of scratchplate material, applying a logo on the reverse. spray the back of the plate white and then peel of the logo so its spangly blue showing through
a clear guard painted on the reverse is very gretsch
-
Nice thinking on the scratchplate Wez! That would look great, good choice with the logo style too!
That looks awesome :o :o 8) :D
-
mmmmm tv jones
-
Even the red logo would look good, Wez? But maybe the see-through sparkle idea would be a bit more subtle and classy 8)
-
oh yeah guitar and logo look good as well
-
If definitely needs the scratchplate, and I like the Gretsch-style painted clear plate idea! :)
-
Yep, I agree with you Philly. It looks a bit too plain without the scratchplate, if Blue Sparkle can be called plain!!!
-
Yeah, Fenders need scratchplates. They just look right.
I'm very tempted to try a TV Jones pickup on one of my Warmoth projects, but I feel like I'd be "copying"...
-
What about using a cut-down Tele bridge rather than a Strat one, like the GE Smith?
http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0118202806
-
i think out of the mock-ups it definately suits the scratchplate better- but sometimes these things need to be seen in real life to be sure.
i used the red logo for the mockup because its a file i have on my memory stick - paint was being arsey when i tried to change it to blue. i could move to a better equipped computer but that would mean moving from my little hidey hole.
TF - i would have Pm'd you but i can only use the quick reply box when at work :(
-
The only good thing about that guitar is that Wez is making it!
Scratch that, there is one more thing that is good about it: it's not mine! :)
Hope the wait isn't too agonising... how will you cope with only a few PRSs for company?! :D
Roo
-
No probs Wez! That mock up looks superb, exactly as I pictured it! Should look brilliant in the flesh :D
How's the body coming on?
-
Just an idea.
If you prefer the look of a P90, TV Jones makes a fliterton in a P90 cover.

I knew you'd love it Roo
I think I'll just about manage to cope ;)
Just noticed that I seem to have a thing for blue guitars at the moment!
-
i have the body cut out, neck pocket cut and top egde routed for binding. if i get chance i will get some more pics soon but its going to be a busy weekend camping in the rain
Roo - would you not be tempted to borrow it just to see the look on your bandmates face when it came out the case!
Ratrod - damn you - that pickup looks nice. I think i prefer the look of the toasters but having that option for P-90 guitars is really cool.
-
Roo - would you not be tempted to borrow it just to see the look on your bandmates face when it came out the case!
While they may be amused/violently ill, I think I might come off considerably worse for it ;)
-
Amusing? :?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess!
I just laughed my @ss off when i saw that blue sparcle stuff, i had something like an esquire in my head, but with clear nitro back and sides and a carved, black maple top or something like that.
Anyway, i like your crazy plans TF, ill bet it sounds great aswell with a good quality korina and a maple top!
-
(http://www.oasismusicalinstruments.ltd.uk/acatalog/NewDuesenberg49erBlueSparkle.jpg) like blue sparkle reminds me of mine

something's going really wrong.
i find it really, really sexy. why??

Because it is. Simple as that :)

That black one looks awesome :)
-
Surely Fender need to make a production version of "La Cabronita".
Maybe Squire will make one, it could be the successor to the Squire '51
I have to admit, I've never seen a black Les Paul Standard with p90s
Looks great, like a black/goldtop 8)
-
Surely Fender need to make a production version of "La Cabronita".

they really should. imagine one of those priced for under £300 - hot cakes anyone
-
They were supposed to only be making 10 of each in black or gold, but I've seen red ones too. Looks like they'll be a limited run from time to time?
I agree, Squier ones would be a BIG seller.
-
And for those who didn't catch last time - here's Shane Nicholas from Fender playing a red one:

Count me in!
Although of course I would end up changing the neck, tuners, pickup, electronics... and it would cost me £600+.
-
On the Filtertron front - if you want an alternative to TV Jones check out Curtis Novaks variations on the theme:
http://curtisnovak.com/pickups_guitar.shtml
-
Yeah a Squire would sell, the Fender prices are crazy :o
Looks great in red, is it a one-off?
-
I've seen a red one for sale on a site in the US, so I would say no.
Unless it was the same guitar of course.....
-
oh, korina, nice. :D nice colour scheme too :) EDIT: i think the scratchplate helps, too. sparkle and a scratchplate look nice on the right guitar.

nice but even more than the original..*L*

If you want a dead on ZZ-Top tone, go for a Powertron +. That's what the Rev Billy G has in most, if not all of his Flitertron equipped guitars.
I have a regular Powertron in my Gretsch. Lovely pickup. Big growly sound, a little less twangy than a Classic.
The plus version is overwound, too Gibby PAF for my taste.
-
I'd be tempted to go for a Powertron in the bridge of my Tele if the Broadcaster pickup I already have in there wasn't so perfect.
-

I'm tempted by the Powertron Plus, or maybe a regular Powertron. I thought the Plus might be more PAF-ish than Gretschy, but that would probably suit me to be honest.
-
Wow, i've never seen that Fender before! cool!
I think it should have gretch style thumb inlays... I love those inlays.
I want to make one. a Metal one.
-
For those of you who haven't seen the other thread, here's Wez rolling the edges of the neck for this guitar........

-
just been having a play with the pickguard design, so here is a mockup with the paper template
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/new/mock.jpg)
probably just needs a little more curve on the back edge - but not too shabby!
-
Hey hey! Great!
-
Looks great! I like the bigger, more Gretschy knobs too.
I'm surprised how pale the korina looks, I always imagine it as more of a golden colour - is it normally finished with a bit of an amber tint to bring out the colour more?
-
not huge tele fan, but liking to far what colour is it going to be now
-
Back and sides will be natural, top will have a white edge binding and will be Blue Sparkle :)
-
no stain clear coat for back?
-
That's up to Wez, but it'll either be clear or a light amber/gold?
-

its raw wood and always looks a bit more pale, and its taken with a flash
If you look at the build thread for tony's guitar you can see that the mahogany was really pale - but came to life under a simple clear finish
there wont be a tint unless the tones in the korina are clashing with the blue
-
Mr Wez makes great guitars.
8)
-
Hey hey! Great!
Yeah, it looks really good - an extremely "clean and functional" look to it.

Who needs goldtop when you can have sparkletop????!! :D
-
i would put some more pics up if my internet was behaving itself
looking really nice with the binding on!!

Gods every time I see this thread I want one.
Maybe a P90 one.
So many guitars, so little money. :(

well i am much cheaper than fender ;)
i think its funny the way fender priced this guitar - its so simple to do that it was only ever going to spawn copies

I mean really, a P90 esquire. That's doomtastic. It practically screams Master of Reality.
Maybe I need to send a PM...

Fender and Gibson have both been up to this a lot recently. Value of the guitar based on its 'collectability' (due to limited production) rather than its production cost. Leaves a gap in the market for low volume builders
-
Exactly!
PRS are doing the same thing too.....
-
Guitars like this make companies like warmoth very happy.
-
Guitars like this make companies like warmoth very happy.
I was going to say something along those lines, but you've put it much better!
You have to wonder if anyone actually buys these Custom-Shop-only models, but they certainly inspire copies!
-
You have to wonder if anyone actually buys these Custom-Shop-only models...
Oh they do. I was in a shop on Denmark Street trying out an amp and watched, pretty much slack-jawed, as a middle-aged man in a pin-striped suit and a loud public-school accent marched in with his son, aged about 14 or 15. Junior points at a Custom Shop '70s Relic Strat, "I want that one, daddy" and the credit card is duly produced and three grands worth of Fullerton's finest heads out of the door without even a demo. Amazing. I asked the guy in the shop if that kind of thing happened often and he nodded. I think these guitars are generally bought by those who want to put them on a wall or for whom money is no object. Or to put it another way, not me.
-
Yeah, you're right of course. :)
I suppose I was thinking just from the point of view of the average punter. If we want "A Strat" or "A Tele" and can't afford Custom Shop prices, we can probably find a very similar guitar which does suit our pockets, be it a US production model, MIM, CIJ/MIJ or whatever.
On the other hand, if I want something like a La Cabronita, which is only available from the Custom Shop, it's out of my reach (unless I really think it's worth saving up to buy one - but who saves up nowadays? ). But I might go and buy some Warmoth parts and build something very similar. So all Fender get out of it is me stealing their idea!
-
But Warmoth are licensed by Fender on the body / headstock shapes aren't they? So surely that still generates revenue
-
Yeah, good point. I wonder if they pay Fender based on sales, or if it's just some kind of flat fee?
-
I finally managed to get some pictures uploaded!!
Binding is done and most of the routing is done too, neck should be fitted this week before sanding ready for finish!
here is a mock up with parts resting in place... I wiped it down with white spirits to show the korina's colour a little better. also, it seems to have a nice flame/shimmer which the photos dont really do justice... it should make the back look pretty special! its the white spirit that soaked into the pickguard template... should have waited a minute longer
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/new/rmock1.jpg)
-
sweet, very nice indeed.
-
That looks sooooooooo good!
:D
Me likey lots :)
-
thats good then ;)
-
It's almost tempting to leave it natural all over. Almost. But I have one like that already ;)
-
nah. i considered it for a second but the blue sparkle is going to look awesome!!
-
I must say I am looking forward to the end result.
-
That Tele is looking great! Can't wait to see what it looks like once it's finished. I think the blue sparkle will look great on the korina wood.

I'm so looking forward to seeing how this turns out in the end!
-

that looks SICK, I want one.
the natural Korina would look nice, but I'm a sucker for sparkle finishes so here's a +1 for the blue sparkle.
-
Hey, have been out for a while, I'm on holidays! :D
Looking really cool, looking forward to see the finish done! And the pickguard is looking cool, so I'm with the mouth shut
-
Beautifull!!!

Would look sweet left as it is...... However i have a thing for blue guitars! :D
Look forward to seeing the end result.
-
Wez is just finishing off the sculpted heel and he's convinced me to go for a 'tummy cut' in the back, so that will be added before it heads off for finishing. He's also going to round the body binding a bit to make it less hard-edged on my forearm when I play.
It's all coming together nicely :)
-
just mounted the neck to test everything lines up before i do the final clean up and sand to send it off for finishing

glad i didnt cut those TV jones wires much shorter all those years ago!!
here is a shot to show the rather subtle contouring on the back
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/new/neckfit3.jpg)
rather than having it look like it has been attacked by a shark i really wanted to keep this soft, more like the roundover has increased as it gets towards the waist
-
he's convinced me to go for a 'tummy cut' in the back
That was a bit rude of him ...
-
Looks superb Wez!
-

Decisions, decisions..............tummy cut or liposuction.
But it's looking great, Wez.
-
and off it goes for some paint!!
-
Awesome!
How long until it's back???
-
i hope within 4 weeks, although its sometimes hard to predict accurately. this is the patience breaking time i'm afraid... a long wait without my usual updates!
-
No problem - it'll give me chance to sell the Ibanez RG to get the cash I'll be paying you with!
-
haha, half of me's going, "awesome, that paint job will be great", but the other half is saying, "but it looks so nice the way it is"...
-
nah, better with some paint i think.
now if we had gone for mahogany body or rosewood fretboard it would have looked awesome natural - just that bit more contrast between the maple neck and body wood makes loads of difference
-
I'm not normally a paint-fan - I prefer to see the natural wood colour & grain.
But having seen the mock-ups of the blue sparkle posted earlier, and become the fortunate owner of another Mike-painted, Wez-built guitar ... I think that one's going to look much better painted.
So, what's next Wez?
-
a few interesting things to keep me busy during summer.
* next one back from mike is a lapsteel that is getting painted in an off white pearloid effect to emulate the look of an old accordian . its the one with the bigsby palm pedal i have shown off in its raw state before
* I need to finish the fretwork on my charity telecaster and add a headstock logo so i can get that moving foward
* i am currently focused on a through neck, fretless bass thats kind of an evolved EB0/LPJ design - still very classic and more like gibson should have made them (in my opinion, obviously)
* there is going to be a 14" scale 12 string mando guitar in a mini SG shape, its started but not very far along
*just about to start something PRSish which should be interesting
*I also have the old handmade explorer and a 70's strat project taking me down the vintage restoration path a bit more
loads of other ongoing projects too - but these are the ones with timeframes!
-
Do all those have buyers Wez? Or are they experiments for you?
-
all spoken for - some are experiments for me with buyers, which is even better ;)
-
nah, better with some paint i think.

well i dont think TF is gonna let anyone spray the PRS spangly blue!!!
as for the esquire - it was going to be totally spangly blue, we decided to leave the back and sides natural because of the wood.
-
Too true, the PRS ain't being touched!
Wez and I talked about transparent blue on the back and sides, but we've gone with natural as a great contrast to the blue sparkle top.
-
Have been following this thread but not commented as yet, but I'm mreally interested to see how this comes out.... it sounds like I'm really going to like it. I will say that on my own T type, the tummy cut and forearm profile make it so much more comfortable for me to play than my old ASAT which had the classic slab body. Can't wait to see the pics and hear Dave's review :)

choice well made, trans-blue on the sides would've been a touch too much dare I say.
a red sparkle finish would be nice too, hmm... how much is Wez knocking these out for?
-
I got Red Sparkle on my Tele, and I've been hankering after a Blue Sparkle guitar since!
No idea what a full guitar would cost as I supplied the neck...
-
Quick update for everyone who's interested. The guitar should be ready in 2-3 weeks or so, and the paint job is almost finished. A preview of the body before final flattening, buffing and completion.....

looks really really goood

these are camera phone pic on a rainy day in scotland, according to mike its nowhere near as good as it looks in real life
just done the fretwork on the neck too, shiny as a mother f***er!!
...
which maybe the way we have to label the whole guitar ;)

It's been cats & dogs everyday this week :(

They're stainless on this neck, aren't they? Does that make fretwork much more difficult?
(Why Scotland, just out of interest? Long way to go.)
-
yeah, i have just done fretwork for this and TF's other TV jones tele. both stainless. It takes longer and really eats through tools, but they do come up nice
i have two more necks to level and polish tonight, they will take about 1/2 the time of one of these necks
i send my spraying to mike because he is thorough, very keen and has a great eye for colour. he is in scotland and it is a pain sometimes but worth it
-
Did you manage to get the dent(s) out of the Thinline's frets Wez? Hopefully that'll play really nicely now?
-
yeah, its gone and the high 12th is where it should be too. i just have to do one or two extra little bits on that neck to get it feeling great then i will be putting it together to make sure it all plays like it should
i know warmoth say Goncalo alves doesnt require any finish, but i also know that just a touch followed by a good rub down will bring it out really nicely
-
Thats looks amazingly awesome!
Just out of curiosity Wez, where in Scotland is this Mike located?
-
Oooh, shiny. I like that. Maybe I'll get to Wez's extra early :)
(only joking Dave - I wouldn't dream of playing it before you)
-
mike is in stirling, search for lennon guitars
i was right by the way, a touch of oil rubbed into the goncalo alves neck for the thinline has really made it quite specia, a little buff in the morning with 0000 wire wool and its done!
-
Perfect - sounds great Wez! Looking forward to actually playing that one! I'm considering swapping the TV Jones' in it for some nice humbuckers I have lying around to make it a bit "335-ish"......
The last bit of the wait is the hardest part!
-
Very nice! :D I like soo much!
yeah, its gone and the high 12th is where it should be too.
Warmoth neck? Can I know what was wrong?
-
Got to say I like the look of this one Dave. I cannot wait to see the end result. It looks like you are are going to get a absolute cracker when it is finished.
-
Fernando - the frets weren't completely level all the way down the neck. Not a big problem, and something Warmoth say can happen when you build the guitar.
Gareth - cheers mate! It's come together really nicely!
Mrs Twinfan has just seen the pics and is SERIOUSLY impressed. So that's two of my guitars she actually likes - the WezV and the Modern Eagle....
-

Can't believe she doesn't like your tele. Jane doesn't think mine is anything special :o
-
looks great
-
yeah, its gone and the high 12th is where it should be too.
Warmoth neck? Can I know what was wrong?
its not anything warmoth did wrong, the neck is made well. high frets can happen even on well made necks
most warmoth necks are playable out the box but i garantee you that all of them will be better with a little fret dress and loving care.
now if i was picky i would point out that the slight problems that were on this neck seem centered around patches of flame. i dont think that in itself is an issue but it could explain why a trip half way round the world let a problem develop in those areas.
-
Cool! Great that it fixed up :D
-
Can't believe she doesn't like your tele. Jane doesn't think mine is anything special :o
I think the Relic-ing puts her off a bit, but she loves the colour!
-
Cool finish. Would look nice on a fifties sled too.
-
the thinline has come up really well and buzz free, although i repeat my utter dislike of EZ-lok tuners. in fairness they do keep the guitar nicely in tune but they are a bugger to string up, even worse to remove strings, the wraps dont look as tidy as normal tuners (at least with as much force as i really want to tug on the string) and i managed to snap the high e, which never happens to me!
the acoustic tone is awesome, which should translate well once plugged in
-
Cheers Wez - and sorry about the tuners :(
I bought them to try out, and as this was a guitar made of left over parts they had to be used. I wouldn't buy them again that's for sure.
I've always like the acoustic sound of that guitar, and I'm pretty much decided it's going to have a pickup swap when I get it back.
-
I'm looking forwatd to seeing both of these Teles! :)
-
should be receiving this back from paint tomorrow - really looking forward to it.
-
Mmmmm sparkly

Wow, that is really looking great!
The blue sparkle looks really nice on that guitar. That is definitely one of the nicest finishes I've seen.
-
I'd play that. That looks absolutley gorgeous.
Paddy
-
I think it needs something else. Something definitely missing. Looks a little odd.
Try some strings :D
Nice one. :)
-
it now has strings on ;) just a bit of set-up and wiring to do... oh, and i need to make a backplate and reshape teh bottom edge of scratchplate a little, but it should be playable soon
-
That is stunning :o
-
Corking! :D
-
I have a feeling I'm going to like this guitar.
Very, very much.......
-
I like it alot.
A guitar just doesn't look finished untill the strings are on.
Can't wait for the final pics.
BTW, I recently got inspired by a really cool color that should be very cool for a future guitar project. it's a torch red with a gold metallic flake in it. It looks red untill the light bounces off it on a certain angle and the whole thing lights up.

That looks AWESOME, Dave :) Didnt think I'd like blue sparkle but it really works on that guitar.
-
I knew people would think differently when they saw it!
Can't wait to gig it on 26th Sept...
-
i feel it really has come together well - i havnt even shown any of you the back yet
I am glad this korina was so nice, thats what prompted us to go with the binding and top only sparkle and i think that really works so much better than the all over sparkle would have done.
can you tell i am happy with it ;)
ratrod, i like that idea a lot. i have a hofner thinline body around here somewhere i really need to make a neck for - it needs a hotrod paint job when done!!
-
I'd like to see a sister guitar to that Tele with a black back and a big fat humbucker in it...
...I hate being a student :(
Paddy
-
Looks so right.. great decision to only sparkle the front.
-
looking good can't wait to hear the sound
-
Dave, congrats on this guitar! JUst looking at that pic.... wow, it's like sky at night with a million shining stars! Can't wait to see the finished article.
To Wez, great great work.... I'd love to have you work on a guitar for me. 8)

I have one blue sparkly Duesy..now want another sparkly blue guitar...and a tv jones...damn you
-
Awesome!
-
Superb guitar.
-
i used to have a spangly blue squier supersonic, it had bigger flakes than this but didnt sparkle the way this one does. i think they sprayed it a bit thick so some of the glitter went flatter and you got patches all reflecting in a similar way. this is much better, like a crowd of tiny blue people taking photo's!!
-
Wow Wez, that looks incredible! On stage it'll be fantastic!
By the way folks, I've not even seen the back yet. I'm assuming the figure in the korina has come out quite well and Wez is keeping it a surprise.
Unless he's ballsed the wiring up

-
i have a pic of the back, but nothing that shows how nice it really looks, and i coudlnt capture that on a video easily. You can just about see the shimmer in this pic:
in real life it doesnt look as pale and the slight shimmer looks like a crowd of tiny people doing a mexican wave.... ok, that may be going a bit far, it just gives it a nice touch of luxury, its a really good bit of wood
-
I'm gonna post that vid on the gretsch pages.
They'll love it.
-
looks like a crowd of tiny people doing a mexican wave...
 Sounds completely like the TV "Call now and you'll win......" merchandise
-
Just realised the back plate isn't going to be recessed? I thought it was going to be flush Wez?
-
it can be if you want it to be :)
-
What do you reckon? Worth doing? Just thinking it might finish it off nicely?
-
well i wasnt too fussed but i know some people like them that way
my thought is that the ferrules and neck plate are not recessed so its not really needed on the backplate either... your choice
also, i havnt decided on colour yet, i suppose white would be best... i am used to doing them black. i have both so again its up to you.
-
Arrgghh! Decisions!!!
Let's go with your recommendation:
* Non-recessed back plate
* White plastic plate
Job's a good 'un :D
-
man,
i want a metal flake sparkle guitar so bad since i seen IntenseJim's in the user gallery.
seems like a waste to get an LTD refinished hahaha.
i doubt ill ever find one cheap
-
:drink:
Awesome, simply awesome.
-
Oooooh, that looks nice. Looking forward to giving it a go next weekend! If I get there before you I promise not to touch it before you (or even look at it!)
-
could be a bit of a tele fest next weekend then, especially if you two bring your fenders
Here at the moment i have together and playable:
* the sparkly blue WV/warmoth 'la cabronita'
* TF's warmoth thinline with Tv jones p-ups
* my burl maple tele with mac ebony neck and a set of emerald's
-
Tele fest - :o
Yep, will be bringing mine.
-
I'll bring Ruby Tuesday too :)
-
I'll bring Ruby Tuesday too :)
 I want to play it again! What pups does it have in it? Is it a twisted tele neck and broadcaster bridge?
-
The finish looks really really sweeet.
Wez, where did you get the black plastic thingy that goes between the neck plate and body? I've had em on my Suhrs too and would like one on the Esquire thingy.
Ta
-
twinfan sent that along with the neck. tbh i dont use them normally but a quick search shows allparts have them

Haha, that's great! As you say, the Supersonic didn't sparkle anything like that!
-
Wez - You need some decent photos of SparkleTele for the new website ... pics without a microwave or kettle in the background
I'll grab the YouTube video too.
That is a stonking looking guitar, and I thought I was bored of Teles!!
-
Cheers Tony. Glad folks like the look of it, Wez and Mike have executed my requirements perfectly!
I watched that YouTube clip again earlier - I can believe how much the sparkle, sparkles!!
-
Turned out rather nice there Dave. :)
-
I can see the next week is going to drag. I'm picking it up next Sat...
-
It's a hard life. ;)
-
Sorry, I thought you had it already when I skim-read to catch up on this one yesterday.
It's looking really good - hope it sounds/plays as well as it promises :D
-
Wez - You need some decent photos of SparkleTele for the new website ... pics without a microwave or kettle in the background
you forgot the litter tray... so many of my in progress photo's have litter trays in the background!!
its because i really like the wenge effect worktop ;)
i should be heading into town in the week so will pick up some black material for future final photos to work with the upcoming website... its something i need to get better at so maybe i will make some light boxes too
-
*sigh*
Still two days to go until I pick this up. I'm getting proper itchy fingers......
-
i hope to get some really nice pics in those couple of days!!
-
Get them done man!
-
Wez - presume that this guitar is on your standard terms & conditions ... ie if someone comes along with an extra £5 before Mr Twinfan arrives, then you'll sell it to the new higher bidder?
I'm not busy today, I could be with you in about 2-3 hours?
-
well the idea is that from now on i really need to be taking decent photo's for the next version of my website (because i am aware its pretty lame at the moment!!)
so i have some backdrop material ordered but its being slow to turn up, i might have to improvise if it doesnt show today
the other issue will be lighting, which i guess i can build up slowly and use natures ligthing for now (when its not raining)
i do have people that can do it for me but its a hassle trying to sort it out everytime i finish a guitar, and i am fairly sure nobody wants to have to wait longer to get their guitar ;)
tony - make it £10 :)
-
tony - make it £10 :)

See you around 2pm.
See, I can be bothered to get there to collect it ... not like that other guy who wants to keep you hanging on until the weekend ...

i will get the kettle on :)
poor dave, i bet he's nervous enough.

:o Man, that is sweet 8)
-
Plays & sounds awesome too through my little Epi Valve Jr.
:D
-
That does look good chaps.
I wasn't convinced about the scratchplate when I first saw it a while back (as in what it doesn't cover, so why is it there, kinda thing...), but it's kinda grown on me and I now accept it as part of the whole...
-
Great looking guitar - nice job, Wez - that retro-look pup really fits well with the project
-
I agree with Andy about the pickguard. Really does look great on that guitar!
-
Looks great!! I'll bet it sounds awesome too.
-
That looks awesome! TF must be wetting himself in anticipation!
-
Yep - very nice job Wez. Didn't think I'd like it when to started but love the blue and the scratchplate.
-
Holy shitee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o
Man that's hot!
I'd hit it. Giggity giggity. :D
And why is Wez getting all the credit for colour and scratchplate etc? It was my bloody idea!!!!!!!
-
he has a point - i didnt imagine it would look this good when we first started discussing it. Dave gets the credit for the really cool design idea.
i get the credit for all the little design tweaks that no bugger except me and dave will ever notice :)
-
And why is Wez getting all the credit for colour and scratchplate etc? It was my bloody idea!!!!!!!
It's like that "Whiter Shade Of Pale" court case all over again!
-
he has a point - i didnt imagine it would look this good when we first started discussing it. Dave gets the credit for the really cool design idea.
Ha ha - cheers Wez! I wasn't getting angry, just making a point ;)
I guess the Fender Custom Shop should take most of the credit, but I had the blue sparkle colour in mind from the off. The natural back was my idea too after we saw how nice the wood looked when cut. We both agreed on korina for the body and the need for a top binding.
i get the credit for all the little design tweaks that no bugger except me and dave will ever notice :)
Wez, quite rightly, should take all the credit for the tummy cut, neck heel scultping, scratchplate logo etc.
-
i get the credit for all the little design tweaks that no bugger except me and dave will ever notice :)
Wez, quite rightly, should take all the credit for the tummy cut, neck heel scultping, scratchplate logo etc.
Is it a very subtle version of the Suhr/Warmoth style contoured heel? I wasn't quite sure from the photos.
-
yeah, dave didnt want to take away from the teleness by adding to many contours and originally it wasnt going to have any. so the aim was to keep it subtle but just make the natural back slightly more organic because i like guitars with flowing contours. For the tummy cut i wanted it to just seem like an increased roundover in that area rather than a massive shark bite
in the end i think its just about right, still a slab bodied guitar - but just that bit comfier
we also softened the front edge with a slight roundover which takes away the digging in that can happen on top bound tele's with very square edges
i also contributed with the gretsch style knobs and perspex idea for the scratch plate - like i say, all silly things that are not obvious till its in your hands
-
Yep, you did Wez - I forgot the knobs and the scratchplate! The point I was making - rather badly I admit - is that it was a real joint effort, and I think it's come out superbly :D
I just want to play the damn thing now!!!
-
i understand, tbh its the way i prefer it - it should be a collaboration
-
Definitely - hope I've not offended you :)
-
as long as you bring me some money i promise not to spit in your tea ;) the whole point of going custom is to get something distinctly yours so it really is best if you think of it that way... but its mine too!!
i have two more esquires to build now!!
-
i have two more esquires to build now!!
I assume you'll be getting a royalty on these now then Dave?
-
i am only definately getting paid on one of them, the other one is an idea me and the sprayer have been discussing
-
Oooh, sounds interesting. I want to know more.........
-
good job you are coming around tomorrow then. it will have to be hush hush for a little while longer
-
We'll speak tomorrow then ;) I've got an idea for a bit of something too..............
-
It is fecking gorgeous!
And inspirational.........
Ideas are popping up in my head like: a thinline version with dual Filters and a Bigsby? Or a baritone?
Anyway, I'm curious what you have cooking, Wez.
-
Ideas are popping up in my head like: a thinline version with dual Filters and a Bigsby?
i dont play tele's, but i really like this idea too.
-
we did discuss a bigsby, and i do think it could really work with the design (infact i know it could because i placed the bigsby palm pedal on the other day).
it would take away from the simplicity though. at the moment its understated and spangly, which is a hard balance to achieve
-
That's what's cool about Teles. You can make 'em simple or fully loaded.
When I did my CV Esquire, I went for simplicity and visual impact with the pin stripes. The stripes pop but aren't over done. I think I got the balance right.
Before that I had the idea of adding a Bigsby and a Filtertron or DeArmond in the neck. That would have been cool too in a whole other way.
A sparkly thinline with dual filters and a Bigsby would be like a cross between a Tele and a Sparkle Jet.
You have the platform. You can make it into a Duece roadster hot rod or a '59 Cadillac.
BTW, I dig this too.

Would that be on your existing swamp ash/goncalo Thinline?
-
that looks badass
-
i doubt it because of the bridge issue - but that ones playing nicely too now. although i think it will be a bit eclipsed by la cabronita tomorrow morning
-
I think it will be Wez!
Philly - the current thinline has a string through, but I could re-body the neck. Or start a fresh......
-
great work on this guitar TF and Wez. i have to admit, i really don't like tele's and never really have. but this one looks very nice. love the colors.

Seems odd to have a custom finish (sparkle sea foam/surf green ?) and cover so much of it :?

I got back about and hour ago and can report that La Cabronita is a very nice guitar indeed. It was tele city at Wez's place this morning. I counted at least 5 - there may have been more but I can't remember!
-
about 5:
your blue esquire
Daves red spangle tele
Daves thinline warmoth
the little donkey bar-steward, or whatever we are calling it (some discussion over the meaning of la cabronita)
My burl maple with ebony neck tele
+ there was my half completed stratele in the corner

I'm still at my Mum's, and will be until late this evening, so it'll be a while until I give a full tone report.
What I will say though, is that Wez and Mike have done a superb job with this guitar - the pictures just don't do it justice! I really can't wait to try it out through my Martamp Orion. The brief test I gave it at Wez's indicates that it's going to be a little belter.....
-
I was right - it's a little belter!
The great thing about this gutiar is that it combines the best elements from my other guitars:
* It plays as slickly, and has the same neck profile, as my Modern Eagle
* It has the snap and attack of my Custom Shop Tele
* It's got the singing midrange of my Korina McCarty
* It has the open yet beefy tone of my Fano JM6
etc
I'll crank the Orion up a bit later today when the neighbours are up and about, and give it a good run out at rehearsal on Tuesday night, but the indications are that this will be my main gigging guitar :o I'll need the Eagle for the heavier stuff like Slither by Velvet Revolver, but for clean stuff through to classic rock it'll be the Cabronita all the way I reckon. Awesome.
The c--ked wah effect works really well with lots of gain for a great lead sound, I can see me using that a lot :)
Result all round - thanks again Wez!
-
Good stuff Dave - if it covers so many bases, and I'm sure it does, will we be seeing an end of summer sale from you? :D
-
Great that it turned so nice! Clips!!!!!! :D
-
Sounds great!
I'm very much looking forward to the development of my tele now ;)

Ever the opportunist!

Am I that transparent
-
That sounds great TF, the pics have me totally gassing for a Cabronita! And nice to hear it covers so many bases.
-
well i am happy with that :)
-
Sounds like another winner from Mr Wez

Ian beat me to the comment on the summer sale...
-
Great result Dave. The guitar looks a beauty and by your description is as good in the hand as it is on the eye.
-
Wez, if you get a minute, could you drop me a pic to the usual address. I haven't been able to see any of the pics in this thread. Tried to look on your website, but it sent my computer a bit starnge (more than likely my computer though as things shitee)
-
Great that it turned so nice! Clips!!!!!! :D
Very quick and dirty clip showing different gain levels, chords and lead work, plus the c--ked wah setting in some places. This is just me and La Cabronita going straight into my Martamp Orion:

Sounds very good!!
-
Looks and sounds great. I notice you included Roxette - will you be going for the black nail varnish ( a la Phil X ) to complete the look?
-
I nearly made a joke about that! Maybe if I wear the nail polish, I can play it better ;)
-
Sounds great, nice chime 8)
-
Sounds great.
Would you mind if I posted a link to the clip on the Gretschpages?
Trust me, they'll dig it.
We brought to Teles to the Gretsch Roundup yesterday. My Esquire and a thinline with Bigsby and two Supertrons.
-
No problem Ratrod :) Just apologise in advance for my playing ;)
And if there's a thread going, can you send me a link?

I managed to see the vid and to hear the clip. A great guitar-I love that finish and it sounds fantastic. Great workmanship Wez.
-
Good stuff Dave - I must learn the chords to Roxanne!
It's very open sounding and the Orion is sounding good to. I'm assuming you had the power scaling on.
-
I love the look and sound of that guitar. I think everyone involved needs to give themselves a good slap on the back. I really like that clear, yet punchy tone. Very nice.
-
Yep, I had the Power Scaling on. The overall volume was TV levels - you can hear the strings acoustically in the quieter parts.
Looking forward to band rehearsal on Tuesday when I can crank it up a bit.
And these wimpy 9s wearing out so I can put some "real man" 10s on it ;)
-
i try and keep a stock of 9's, 10's and 11's in stock. usually i never seem to have the ones i need but i do have them all at the moment and had 9's in my head. the thinline got the ones from the gigbag and i meant to put the same on the little cuckold bar-steward goat (been trying to find the definition again). i must have got confused as i was sure it was getting 9's
-
It's no problem Wez
I've been trying to find out what Cabronita means too! Female baby goat doesn't quite seem right, so I guess it must be a swear word.
Maybe Fernado Esteves knows????
-
I've been trying to find out what Cabronita means too! Female baby goat doesn't quite seem right, so I guess it must be a swear word.
Having seen a few Mexican and Spanish films, it seems to be used as an all-purpose swear word, sometimes as an insult, sometimes affectionately.... a bit like "mother$%er" on The Wire or something.
But also "La Cabronita" sounds feminine, so maybe it's something like Little Bitch. In a good way.
-
The Little Bitch?
Kinda suits it!
-
I believe the literal translation of "La Cabronita" is The Little Goat. But in Spainish it is used in the context as The Little Bitch/Bar-steward ;)
-
The Little Bitch it is then!
-
The Little Bitch it is then!
I prefer female baby goat. Awww!
Looking forward to seeing this tomorrow. :D The sound clips are intriguing....very different.
-
It is mate. A real hybrid of Tele and Gretsch, with some korina 'meat' thrown in.
I reckon you'll like it...
-
-
Well it had it's first outing last night and she sure looks purty :)
I used her for about 3/4s of the sets where she sounded and played great - thanks again Wez!

Looks awesome dude. You've successfully made me like sparkly guitars!
-
love it... sparkle finishes rule, teles rule, twangy gretsch tones rule. whats not to like about this guitar.
-
You can't see it on this video unfortuntely, but you can hear it. Clean through my Martamp Orion with a touch of chorus ;)

Sounds great mate :D
Your new singer sounds good as well :)

That was cool. :) And your singer can sing "Wanted Dead or Alive" in tune, unlike JBJ himself!
-
I was thinking, why have you got such a heavy tremelo effect for that song, then your singer started, and she had it too. I realised my laptop speakers were fried
She has a lovely voice, fits in well.
-
New singer sounds great, better than the previous one :)
Are you getting a different reaction at gigs? (and I don't just mean that the pervs sit up-front  ) I tried to get a female sing in my band for years but all the ones we tried were nightmare divas or cripplingly self concious :?
-
Looks superb that guitar. Im glad going custom worked out so well for you. The new singers got dam good voice too when she gets going.
At some point I must make the effort and come and watch one of your gigs.
-
Sounds great!
Should she change the words to 'cowgirl' though?
-
Hold on, you are taking the Modern Eagle out gigging now :o I thought you said that wouldn't happen
-
Sounds great and looks alright I guess, I'm not a fan of the pickguard myself. Video was cool though, sound was pretty good, fab singer too. Shame it makes it look like your audience was one bald man wandering around lost...
-
Looks and sounds great - PDT_009. Guitar is pretty good too :D :D :orcass:
-
Thanks for the kind words guys. Reaction at gigs is about the same to be honest and Colette's voice is really good. She was a bit nervous earlier on (as in this song) but she really opened up in the second set.
Will - yep, the Modern Eagle gets out and about now and again ;)
-
Sounds pretty damn good to me-all round in fact.
-
Sounds good! Like the singer too!
-
Hold on, you are taking the Modern Eagle out gigging now :o I thought you said that wouldn't happen
That's exactly what I thought. I had to look a few times just to make sure!!
-

Yo mate how are ya. Sounds fine and your new singer has a good voice. Guitar looks nice.........even the Graham Coxon/Jarvis c--ker look is cool.
-
Ha ha - cheers Keith! I usually wear contact lenses for gigs, but I'm taking some eye drops at the moment so I can't.
I've just realised I've draped the PRS strap on the Modern Eagle particularly well for a pic
-
i was going to ask what height you were and then i realised it was a 2x12 cab...
Looks great, by the way.
-
I have that tee shirt in orange.
Nice guitar, shame about the fire extingisher (which would be useless if your amp set on fire BTW). Maybe Wez could make you quilted maple one
-

Is the AC/DC picture yours? :)
-
Nah, the venue just happened to have it there! Very appropriate :)
-
COOL!
-
good stuff! :)
-
That looks and sounds very nice!
-
cool look and sound nice..well done wez..mmm tvjones
