Title: NGD (Strat)
Post by: Buddha on August 14, 2008, 12:07:25 PM
Well, not really new, got it a couple of weeks ago but haven't been able to get on here for a while now. Anyhow, after much procrastinating and debating with myself since November, i finally got myself a strat. A CIJ 1962 re-issue, I must say it plays amazingly well, much better than any MIM i've played and definately as good as any MIA Standard I've played. The neck feels just right for me, and it is reasonably light compared to my godin freeway classic. I don't really get along with the texas special pickups, but that will be changed at some point . Here are some pics (http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/4834/p6170032sk1.th.jpg) (http://img376.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p6170032sk1.jpg) (http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/1807/p6290033qn5.th.jpg) (http://img352.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p6290033qn5.jpg)
Anyhow, in the short amount of time i've had it, it's definately become my number one, i love it :)

Oh gorgeous, GORGEOUS... :D

Tis the very guitar that might be next on my list...

I've got a Fiesta Red one already - haven't played it a lot recently due to all the other guitars, but it is my favourite guitar of all time. I didn't mind the Texas Specials, but I put ITs in it eventually.

If I do get a sunburst 62, it's either getting Mother's Milks, or possibly Apaches.

EDIT: Can I ask, if you're in the UK, whereabouts did you get it?

very nice. CIJ (with Fender, anyway) is where it's at for value/bang for buck if you ask me.

:) Lovely guitar by the way!  I'm on the lookout for an MIJ/CIJ Strat, but I want '70s style and they're a bit thin on the ground.  There are loads of '50s/'60s ones though.

I understand that Crafted/Made are quite interchangable and might not signify...

I'm assuming that, because it's got Texas Specials, and because it's "Crafted", that it's one of the non-export, Japanese-market-only ones, these are the beauties... (should be round the £500+ mark if you can find them in this country, mine was £550 just over a year ago)

Yeah, in the uk, got it from here http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?f=data_home&a=0 (http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?f=data_home&a=0), oh and philly http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?f=data_fender_japan_new_guitars&a=1 (http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.php?f=data_fender_japan_new_guitars&a=1) start from the bottom of the page and work your way up, i'm sure there's something there for you . Very good to deal with Malcolm, he's a nice bloke. It is really nice, and i can see what you mean about favourite gutiar of all time andy. The minor difference in Made/Crafted is the dates, MIJ fenders were made from 1982 - 1984, CIJ fenders made any time after 1984. It is a non - export model, all the instructions are in japanese, and the warranty stuff lol . Yeah i'm stuck between the apaches and MM for the pickups, when i'm able to change them lol. Thanks for that, the ST72 models would do very nicely!  :)

I've seen the site before, but as he doesn't carry everything in stock I wasn't sure how much of a wait there might be for a special order - was yours a stock item?

(I really should sell a guitar or two before I buy anything else! )

Understood - I've read up on Fender Japan history a few times, but I never seem to remember the details!

Thanks 38th, but I'm most definitely looking for a maple neck, more like this one (but ideally with the bullet truss rod - basically I want a Strat like the ones they had in shop windows when I was 15  ) :

But good spot anyway, as it shows that site does get updated occasionally - I'm pretty sure the '71 wasn't on there last time I looked.  :D

yeah, those japanese guitars (not just fender) can be ridiculous with the model names and the details regarding year of manufacture etc., you need a degree in cryptology to decipher a lot of them...

It is just the date that's different, there's good background info at this site http://freespace.virgin.net/john.blackman4/history.htm. Philly, no he doesn't carry everything in stock, it's usually 3 weeks for special order, don't know if that helps :)

Certainly does!  :)   I'll get in touch in due course when the GAS gets irresistible.

Although a 3-tone sunburst 62 is "where my heart is" at the moment, I spent an hour extolling the virtues of that very same guitar to my wife last night!! (I didn't notice she'd fallen asleep after the first ten minutes or so...)

I have a 'new' strat too, not too happy with it though. A mostly Squier partscaster. Can't seem to decide on the pickups, i have a strat sized p90 that Tom sent ages ago in the neck and it is PERFECT. Also with a red Lace Sensor in the bridge, which does it's job and i'm happy with. Middle is pretty useless right now, a stacked humbucker from Brow just doesn't cut it. The 2 and 4 positions are useless due to output differences.

My biggest issue is the two pickups sound great on their own, but I want a 'classic' strat! 5 way switch with proper single coils (Trilogy Suites in mind) is what i WANT. but this guitar is half way to sounding great.

Decisions decisions! Do I buy another strat for the trilogys? Do i ditch the electronics i have now? Do i get trilogies and a mustang or something to house the two singles i like? Gar I'm happy yet torn.

I am liking these Japenese Fenders though, don't they have small fretwire or something? Compared to the medium jumbo MIM and MIA?

They do indeed.  I got a copy of the current Fender Japan catalogue this morning - all the '50s, '60s and '70s style guitars have skinny vintage frets and 7.25" radius.   Not ideal for me, but I can live with it (I think).

There are a couple of more "modern" models with approx 10" radius, but they don't have the vintage look.

My 62 or 'Charlie' as I call him is my No1 as well...you just can't beat a sunburst rosewood fretboard'd '62

Interesting yours is a "he", all mine are girls

The "sunburst 62" is a possible next purchase. I had the option to buy one when I got my Fiesta Red last year (Edith)... but Edith was the one doing the talking in the shop!

My old JV 62 ("Arwen", I was reading LOTR a lot in the early 80s) was a sunburst, but I stripped it years ago. Unfortunately, I don't really like the JV neck anymore, it's a bit slim for me now (very much like the new Classic Vibe ones).

Sooner or later, I'll have to get a sunburst to match Edith... I can't quite figure out how to justify it to myself though (let alone the missus!)

That's right, apart from in the SRV type re-issues though. Horsehead i have to ask if that's the second to last strat you want, what's the last strat you want? I haven't come up with a name for my strat yet, apart from number 1, but that's been taken
