Forget what you've heard from it so far, Cyanide/The Day That Never Comes is such a false representation of this album, it's the real deal!
I shall be buying this album when it comes out no worry about that.
-
Yeah I saw the torrent but I can't be arsed to download it. Is Unforgiven III better than the last 2?
-
It's better than II but i actually think it's one of the weakest on this album. Seriously The Judas Kiss and Suicide and Redemption, i literally went into my living room and rocked the $% out!

Same here
I prefer UFII to 3 though and to the first one.
I already pre ordered this album the second i was able to.
-
On track 3 so far - Absolutely LOVING it, to be frank.
Not as good as Formation of Damnation (its closest rival I guess?) But still - Damn good so far.

It's bloody incredible is what it is.
Cyanide is 10x better on record - Infact, almost anthemic.

Agreed, i've got it on just now!
All Nightmare Long is pretty good too i think! Some good riffs in there. Nice to see Metallica are back on form.
Its no MOP, but its definatly a step in the right direction.
-
All nightmare long is my favourite on the album so far. I've gotta say, I've had my doubts(Like most people) but this is brilliant.
-
It's sounding good but I really hope the CD isn't clipping as much as these leaked versions hint at.
In MP3 gain every track was clipping at over 101db :(

As has been recently discussed the modern mastering "fashion" is ruining albums for me (I spent a fair amount of money on HiFi just to have some record exec fu*k it all up for Ipods)

I made the mistake of buying a reasionable pair of headphones (Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 for &42 :) ) and even when the bloody iPod is playing nothing there is so much hiss.
So if the cr@ppy modern mastering is becasue of iPods then damn the record company execs and I hope that somebody fixes your hearing so you will have to suffer like the rest of us

We have radio to thank for 'brick wall' mastering
-
The Loudness wars started long before personal MP3 players became available, it has only gotten worse since though.
As stated above Radio was the real instigator. Radio can't handle sharp transients so was brick wall limited before broadcast.
-
I just downloaded this to see what all the fuss is about.. I wouldnt call it amazing because it just sounds like Metallica to me. It's a whole load better than St Anger though, and so far The Day That Never Comes and Cyanide are the shiteeeetest songs on the album. Great tone :) What did they use for the distorted guitars? It just sounds beefy as $%.
-
All nightmare long - Best song on the album imo...
-
I didn't think I'd say this, but I'm actually excited to hear it now. Damn you guys.
-

That chorus is one of the catchiest Metallica have done I reckon. I love the verse vocal melodies too.
-
Gave this a quick listen last night, definitely going to buy it on its official release, awesome album so far.
I think they have almost pulled a Machine Head with this one e.g pulled their socks up and got back on form, released a stonking album, like MH did with "Through the Ashes of Empires".

Thats my point of reference too. This is metallicas Through the Ashes - its not amazing, but its a very solid album thats back on track after a dark age.
I hope their next is a Blackening
Yes its depressing that I'm comparing metallica to machine head with machine head as the benchmark, but thats how things are now. This a good album, but 'tallica still have some proving to do (far, far FAR less than after stanger, but AJFA or MoP this aint).
I like it about as much as Ride. The best songs on ride are better, and the worst are worse. On the whole I like it about as much.
-
This has had one listen start to finish, I don't imagine I'll ever listen to it again.
Complete and utter mediocrity start to finish. Had I written any of the songs on it, I wouldn't consider them good enough to ever perform for someone else.
Also, when did Kirk get so, so BAD? :?

Kirk used his new randall signature amp
james used 3 amps
engl powerball
diezel vh4
mesa boogie new mark series test amp
-
I thought they were using Diezels on everything now?
-
Where'd you see that they're using powerballs or a new mesa?
I cant find any evidence of this.

this album is just an expansion on ST anger.. its not very good.. what has happened to his phrasing of the lyrics?? its like he is just blurting everything out in the same irritating way.
This is st anger + solos and standard tuning.. that's it. Nothing new or imaginative. The solos are all stock boring runs, what happened to the creativity that was in the solos of old days?? I'm not saying it has to be the same as the 80s Metallica, but their was real creativity their.
I will happily delete this from my computer and never hear it again. I'm glad i downloaded this because i would have bought it and then i would have been annoyed!! I don't think that downloading harms good music, if their is an album i download that i like i will happily buy it, but if people are insistent on putting out sub-par albums then I for one am going to download it first to have a listen and if its not good enough then they should have put out a better album then i would have bought it.
-
How is this anything like St Anger?
The songs on DM are straight Thrash - What was on St Anger was just weird :s

It sounds nothing like St Anger at all. You have to be deaf to not hear the difference.
-
it sounds like st anger in respect to how the songs are written, their are differences... mainly the tuning the album is in.. but the sheer lack of imagination and use of generic sections is just like st anger.

Not like the lyrics on, say, MoP or Justice, huh ;)

Hets always had a blurty lyrical style, and if anything hes much closer to old school on this than before. See - see judas kiss, for example.
The solos are godawfull, thats true. I did think that Hammet pulled one good solo out of the bag - Unforgiven 3. But then I found out that it was het, so I reverted to my previous opinion - Hes one of the worst lead guitarists in metal.
The ONLY points of similarity I can see with stanger are the sections were theres maybe more repetition than required, and some disjointed changes. But those could be said of Justice too.
I aint telling you to like it mate. Hell no. But I dont think youre making a fair comparison.
-

I cant find any evidence of this.
You can see het using them while recording some sections in the mission metallica clips plus there was an interview with james saying hes been given one of the new mark series prototypes that he will definitely use on the album back in 07

Just checked this out. Definitely a step in the right direction - I really enjoyed it. Sure it's not their *best* (although some heady heights those are!), but pretty good, and I'll definitely be buying it!

I keep finding individual things that suck on it, but as a whole I'm actually enjoying it. So that exceeds my expectations quite a bit.

nearly everything he says is in the same boring rhythm which was all over st anger.
4 semi-quavers, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver
This is the best i can describe the thing i think is most like st anger... Their was repetition in master of puppets, but that is not the same at all, that fits very well with the song and is not excessive at all and was repetition of a more origional part.. the repetition im on about is on stock rhythm and lead parts,
-
......BOW DOWN! That says it all.
I love the new album, I have always been a Metallica fan(boy) so maybe my opinion is a little biased, however this is a great album and it is the first album in a while that I actually wanted sit down and learn some of the riffs.
As some on the board might know I am a huge Def Leppard fan and their latest release was awesome by default but Metallica have beasted 'Sparkle lounge' with Death Magnetic and trust me it hurts to say that. :(

I actually prefer this over MOP but as you know ive never really liked that album and thought it was more over rated that the black album the only songs that save it really are orion, damage inc & leper messiah the rest bore the hell out of me especially master of puppets.
-
I like the music/riffs/tone on DM, but it's the vocals that have gone down the pan for me AND they are mixed way to much up front. Oh well, maybe it will grow on me.
-
it's a good album i'll certainly buy it on friday.
-
got this today and just gave it a first listen with much apprehension. turns out there was no need cos i really like it! Ive loved metallica from when MOP came out. wasn't the biggest lover of the black album and after that i dont think ive listened to any new album of theirs more than twice.
Death Magnetic is not the best, buts its good to have a Metallica album that sounds like the Metallica i once loved once more. Its about fecking time.
(Agree on the mastering points that were made. i think im only going to be able to really enjoy it in the car cos it sounds shitee on my expensive kit. Its distorted to hell. I wish the recored companies would stop this shite, or at least lets have a DTS version on DVD format thats been mastered properly.)
-
First.. I really like the songs but amount of digital distortion throughout this album is offensive.
I saw this and had to laugh..

-
Is it just my ears or does the kick, specifically and only, distort on Judas Kiss in the faster sections?
It sounds kind of...dare I say it....intentional. I dont think its that the album as a whole clips - look at some faders or meters or something when listening - its a brick wall. They dont even flicker, and that includes the parts that 'clip'. I think it was a produciton decision.
-
That pic is pretty brilliant!
I listened to Cyanide on their myspace, and it was ok. It was impressive that they were not making total shite like the past 18 years, however, still no where near impressive enough to sidle up next to Ride the Lightning. In my opinion, MOP is one of the most (if not THE most) overrated Metal albums of all time, so i tend to measure Metallica by RTL instead - each to his own. Needless to say, i haven't listened to one minute, let alone a second, of Metallica in 4 years, and i can't say that i am missing much. Though, i am surprised to see them doing something with their talent instead of pissing it down the toilet as in "St. Anger." I suppose i might give this album a listen, but i am not gonna buy it, if not just to spite Lar$.
-

Seriously cyanide is one of the worst songs on the album.
listen the judas kiss & all nightmare long on metallica.com
and i agree all metallica albums should be measured up against RTL
-
Well i'm firmly in the MOP camp. RTL close second. The world would be a boring place if we all like the same thing though.
I'm sure there are a whole load of people out there that were going to hate this album whether it was good or bad. There is no way it could be up to the Cliff Burton era, but those albums are true classics that moulded a genre. Its certainly not shite by any standard. Maybe just about 16 years late. :P

Not that's semitone. The US equivelant of semiquaver is 16th note.

Right on! You are one of the first people to agree with me on that matter, cheers 8). In any case, RTL is just thrashy as fvck, but i will stop it there - no need to get into a "which is better" debate. As modular said, it would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

Ah thanks, and that term actually makes sense in terms of physics etc.
-
I hear down the line that Ted jensen is "Not proud to be ascociated" with this mastering job, and wasnt given much to work with - the mix was pretty much brick-walled when it got to him.
And that distorting kick still sounds intentional - its the kind of thing that lars would probably do *shrug*
-
At least he remembered to put the snare on his snare drum this time.
-
For those who are interested Metallica are on the Jules Holland programme tonight @ 22:00
Probable more shown on Friday nigt around ten aswell
-

For anyone interested in this dreadful record you can now find plenty torrents of the Guitar Hero versions of the Death Magnetic tracks, but mixed and mastered by someone who doesn't think Loudness=Bestness.
-
I was just about to say the same thing!
yay for interwebs!
Roo
-
At least he remembered to put the snare on his snare drum this time.
An interesting fact is its the exact same snare exact same settings just not EQ'd to $%
lars made abig deal about it in one of the earlier mission metallica videos.
-
They were horrible on Later... I like their earlier stuff, but this was boring. Seems like more St Anger, only with Kirk playing dull leads and them back in standard tuning. Decent songwriting was totally absent.

Bare in mind, that's the worst song on the album.
-
Although I'm really uninspired by Suicide and Redemption. It just seems like an endless bluesy jam without any particular bluesy skill or direction, to me. I do like the rest of the album, though. Even the vocals, which people seem to be slamming. They're definitely an improvement over the last 3 albums!!

A step in the right direction...
Hetfield has lost the anger in the vocals :(, my mate Dave would do a better job.
-
Hetfield has lost the anger in the vocals :(
Spot on, you've nailed it right there. I always strugle to pinpoint exactly what has changed about his voice, and thats IT - the aggression has gone.
-
I have always preferred his voice from load onwards, just soudns so much better cleaner.
But his best vocal performance ever was on S&M well that entire performance was flawless from all the band imho
-
bob rock made him do singing lessons for the black album. that was the start of the slippery slope. (voice and album-wise)
-
this made me LOL

Oi, watch it, they're my age!!
Actually they're all a wee bit older than me, apart from Rob.
-
Sorry Phil no offence intended
-
The albums OK. Certainly the best thing they've done in years... which doesn't mean a lot I know. I'm a fraid the clipping kills it for me though. It sounds OK-ish if you listen to it on a poor quality stereo or in the car, but stick it through a decent set of speakers or decent headphones and it becomes painful to listen to after a while.
Had to laugh at this (by some guy on the Andy Sneap forums):
MASTERED BY MUPPETS
End of session day, Rubin works away:
I'm your source of song-destruction
Tunes that hurt you ear, poor sound engineer
Leaving spikes on my instruction
Trust me you will see
Volume’s all you need
Dedicated to
How I'll limit you
Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your albums sell faster
With a loud Master
Master
Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just spiking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered
Mastered
Rubin’s my name, and I'll hear you scream
bar-steward
bar-steward
Need to mix this way, never you dismay
”Loud” makes death magnetic clearer
Gain monopoly, ritual Waves L3
Squash your tracks til it’s severe
Gate and you will see
More and more dB
Dedicated to
How I’m killing you
Compressing faster
Limit your Master
Your albums sell faster
With a loud Master
Master
Mastered by muppets, brickwalling your dreams
Clipping, distorting and smashing extremes
Ruined by me, you can't hear a thing…
Just spiking snares, and auto-tuned screams
Mastered

Rubin’s my name, and I'll hear you scream
bar-steward
bar-steward
Master, Master, where's the version I've been after?
Bearded, bar-steward, you promised only lies
Blaster, Blaster, recorded on a ghetto blaster?
Laughter, laughter, laughing at those highs
Spike to me!
Lars ain’t worth all that – “natural” kick and hats
Kirk adds wah without a reason
Never ending phrase, Jaymz goes on for days
Rob, your shirt is out of season…
I’ll record til 5 (then)
I will help you buy
Sandals that suit you
Now you look cool too
The guys over there are working on recording it too. :P
