If I ordered from the Warmoth Showcase how long would it take for it to get here? And how much is the extra cost for importing (see below for cost of body and neck)?
$527.00 is what I came up with, body and neck (inc. fret size, etc.)
-
Some Showcase items need work prior to shipping (for example, if the neck doesn't have a nut slot cut and you want to have it cut, or a body blank that needs bridge routing). I believe your order will state what the expected ship date is. Generally, I've never had a Showcase part ship later than 48 hrs after ordering, provided they are not doing finish work.
With the economy being so bad, there are very few waiting lists these days and service-oriented companies are trying all the harder to provide exceptional service just to keep their heads above water!
-
When I ordered my two Strat bodies a few weeks ago they took about 10 days to reach me in the UK, it might even have been a little less than that. As Ben mentioned, they needed a little bit of work (routing for a bridge HB and vintage trem in my case), I'm sure it's quicker if nothing at all needs doing.
They don't tell you the shipping charge immediately when you order - they charge the cost of the items then charge the shipping separately later. It cost me about $80 for the two bodies, I guess your body and neck would be slightly cheaper.
Then remember you'll have to pay another 20% (approx, maybe a bit more) in VAT and import duty when they reach the UK.
-
I went for Humbuckers for Neck and Bridge, and then a normal clear satin with Gotoh/Grover and Corian nut and 6100 fret wire.
The Telecaster Warmoth Pro is a universal fit neck isn't it?
Do I really need a neck finish? (clear satin)

It is if you're fitting it to a Tele body - the Tele necks have a square heel, the Strat necks have a rounded one.
Warmoth recommend a finish under the terms of their warranty. You could get an unfinished neck and do an oil/wax finish which I'm sure is great, but personally I'd prefer to buy a pre-finished neck.
-
Never got a finished neck from Warmoth and never had a problem. I prefer oil only, so they wouldn't cover it under warranty regardless. Blighty has a lot more humidity than most places in the US ('cept for the Deep South), however.
As Philly said, Teles are the exception to the "universal heel" rule. When I ordered the neck for my Criss Oliva clone, I told the guy on the phone tele heel, reverse Jackson headstock, blah blah. He was like, 'Ooo, that guitar is gonna be badass!!' PDT_008

funny :) the guys are obviously good sales guys - when i ordered my hardtail humbucker body the guy was like - 'thats a novelty, a jazzmaster that rocks and stays in tune'
-
I think it'd be roughly just under £400 ... Not inc. hardware or electronics.
-
Remember that they also charge import tax on the postage too.

I converted the price to pounds then whacked it up by 17.5% and 5%
-
allow about 25%... buggers hit you wherever they can (the parcel force £12 admin fee is one such example that usually catches me out). it might be less than 25% but its rarely more unless you happen to be buying small items which catch the admin fee
-
In any case I can afford it. I've never paid for additional charges, ie. import tax before. Like I've only purchased at the store/online and that was it.
Does the bloke delivering your stuff expect cash at hand or.. ?
I sound really stupid. :?
-
depends... parcel force want paying first. If you miss the parcel they send you a bill the next day that needs paying before redelivery. Most other companies pay the customs for you and send you a bill at the end of the month, sometimes unexpectedly!!
-
How would you pay either? Go to the bank and transfer money?
-
depends, usually they have the option of a phone or internet payment
-

When I bought my Warmoth bodies UPS phoned me up from Birmingham airport (or Manchester airport, or wherever the depot was) and I paid the charges over the phone, then they delivered next day.
-
ah yeah, i forgot warmoth send stuff UPS... i think thats what they did for me as well
-
Phone or Internet payment sounds good to me. Now to click the button to buy.. Oh should I.. hmm.. ARGH.
Philly, how much you going to sell your Tele for? Or have you changed your mind?
-

It's only a vague idea at the moment, I really haven't decided. I'd want to recover most of what I bought it for (second-hand) I guess, but I don't want to talk numbers here "in public"!
-
I could really order it all RIGHT NOW. Which is making me sad.. :(

I can help...
DON'T!
Waiting can't do any harm, I reckon in a few months that the GBP might be a bit better off in relation to USD(thats me trying to reason with bullcr@p). And you are then more able to see how your student budget plays out (more relevant :D)

True. I was going to wait out till my second instalment of my loan then spend the first instalment, what's left of it, on a guitar :D
-
If you order something from the showcase without anything needing to be done to it, they will pack it & ship it same day, you will get it 3-7 days later. They ship to the UK with UPS, who will accept payment of VAT & Import Duty (by cheque or card) on the doorstep (at least, they have for every one of my orders).
IIRC, import duty is 3.7%. You add import duty to the cost of the item, then VAT to that amount
e.g. (527*1.037)*1.175= $642.14 = £370.32 (@0.5767 rate from msn currency converter)
If you place the order by phone, they will go get the item from the shelf, give you an "in hand" description & set it aside for you right then & there. If you want something doing to it (fretwire fitted, finish applied, some extra routing etc) they will massively under-promise/over-deliver on times (e.g. quoted me 6 weeks for a neck finish, got it in 3). I'm surprised at Phily's comment about the shipping - they calculated & told me the shipping cost while I was on the phone.
I cannot speak highly enough of Warmoth as a company to deal with. The guitars have turned out pretty damn nice too... :)
-
I think Warmoth are a great company
My only gripe is that the necks always feel a bit on the big side - or at least the ones that people have brought in
-
£370 is even better! And yeah Import Tax is around 3.7%
-
I've bought lots from Warmoth and if it is ready to go it is shipped straight away. If you get an unfinished neck you have to put some finish on unless they say that it needs no finish (my Goncalo Alves, Wenge and Rosewood necks didn't need finishes, however I prefer to put a light oil finish on them anyway). The custom shop always quotes 6 weeks but it is usually faster. My last custom order was an all mahogany LP body with no neck pocket, no bridge/tailpiece holes and cream binding fitted. It came in about 5 weeks and was great. However, I do live in the USA!

Yeah, they say to put a finish on mahogany, maple and.. umm.. something else I forgot.
Plus if I do go ahead with this I need Jonathan's help with the electrics and some minor drilling I think. Hopefully he won't take my wallet.

I ordered online - I'm not good with phones.

yea ive got fedex chasing me for some, i think its cr@p that they deliver it, you sign for it, then they invoice you... they should charge you first or on delivery. charging vat on delivery and their handeling charge.. its absolutly outragous!!!
-
When my Warmoth parts were delievered, the UPS guy needed cash or a cheque on delivery. They don't take cards, which is a pain in the c--k, and had me hunting around for my (seldom-used) chequebook!
On a more general note, I found the staff at Warmoth to be very helpful, and the quality of their stuff to be top class. I'm planning another Warmoth build for the not too distant future.
-
I'm still thinking about a Warmoth. But the fact that I don't have a cheque book here cause I'm at Uni and I dunno how much the delivery will be so I dunno about cash.
I was thinking Telecaster for a nice cheap design and what I want. Then I thought Soloist with a little more custom and obviously more expensive but I just don't know now..
I feel back to square one, lol..
I feel like a Schecter. Or some Ibanez.
-

Stick to the idea of a Warmoth, and take your time working out what you want. I spent six months or so planning my first Warmoth build, and during that time the shape of the guitar changed 4 times, and the various woods and specs changed more times than I can remember. In the end, it was well worth it. I ended up with this:

I'm now planning a Mick Mars-style superstrat, with parts from Warmoth.
-
The neck is OK to go (obviously haven't ordered yet) but the body, there's a problem. My credit card is limited to £350 (WHAT!) and the body is about £430 :(
-
What sort of body are you going for? Many of the finished bodies in the Showcase don't break £300 UK, unless it's something quite fancy.
-
Soloist Carved Top, H-H, 24 fret
Mahogany/Koa ----------------------------------------------- $305.00
Tummy & Forearm Cut ---------------------------------------- $ 30.00
Contoured Heel --------------------------------------------- $ 35.00
Tobacco Burst ---------------------------------------------- $220.00
Drop Top Clear Masked Binding ------------------------------ $ 75.00
1V - 1T - 3W
3/4" Jack Socket
Recessed Original Floyd Rose
I went for Koa cause I didn't want Flame, nor did I want to ring about Quilt Maple. It's comes out as $665.00
I think I can use Western Union for Money Transfer. At least for the body, I can use my credit card for the neck as it's below the limit.
-
Cool, you should be fine with Western Union. Nice shout on Koa btw, that's what the top on mine is! :D

In that case I might decide in less than six months, lol :D
Just checked an e-mail from Dan. He has one Koa top ........ and it's $750 for it. :(

For carved top? That's the price...
Believe me a 1/8" cost US$200...

I've been planning mine for about a year ish, hoping to get started with next months pay check. But i know what you mean about being thorough, its something you definatly want to get right.
BTW, your guitar is Giggity! I think im gonna get one of those angled headstocks (but with a reverse strat headstock) whats your opinion on the angled ones?
-

Yeah, it's a carved Koa top for $750. It better be freakin' good! But I'm asking him about quilt maple now. And if it's still outrageous I'm gonna get a full Mahog/Mahog with a Laminate Top
Plus I think I've changed my mind from a Floyd Rose (it is gonna be a special guitar) and thought about a Schaller 456
-
Quilt has to be the DL, what is a veneer above the top... I'm not a big fan of it, but... They say that the price of a 5/8" top by now is out of a standard that they can offer...
-
I'm going out guitar scouting tomorrow (or today even, looking at the time) and if I find anything nice then Warmoth will have to wait. I like Warmoth for the options. But one thing I don't like is the $%ing communication. I'm sure other people don't like talking on the phone, as well as me. And it just takes bloody ages.
It feels no different than looking for a guitar in shops.
Guitar shop: "Hmm, I'll scope around for a guitar I like"
Warmoth: "I know what I want, it's just gonna take $%ing ages or the same time as scoping due to e-mail"
So yeah, and if I don't find anything then I'll be more than tempted to go for a flat top Soloist off the Showcase.
-
Showcase is very good because it's fast... but order is ok too, mine took 2 weeks to be shipped, instead of the 4 to 6 weeks they've told me...
The email take some time to be answered (about a day) and I agree this is very annoying... As a very anxious person, I suffer a lot with it...

Damn right! As long as I get my answers, I'm all set to go. But I have to wait a freaking day for one e-mail.
-
I went to DV247 and walked into a studio filled room rather than guitars, after 2 hours travel. Then I went to Denmark Street- WOW. However only two shops interested me sadly. The one with the Jacksons (but mainly cause they had a H&K Trilogy) and the shop with Ibanez.
I tried out the RG7321, the RG1570, and an ESP LTD 400 series.
The ESP was a LP shape and I don't do LP shapes, just thought it might work. It didn't.
The seven string was interesting the fact that it didn't feel that much of a strain from six strings, I thought I'd be reaching for Hell trying to play the seventh string.
The RG1570 WAS THE BEST THING IS HAVE EVER PLAYED IN MY LIFE. PERIOD.
And also Dan from Warmoth still hasn't replied after two days so I think Warmoth is out unless something good pops up on the Showcase.
If nothing, then the RG1570 is MINE! Or the seven string, still thinking.
-

I always go with Spike because I like the man, but you'd better send a mail to "sales@warmoth.com"
Everyone will be able to answer and if I remember correctly, it will be faster to get a answer...
Good that you liked the Ibanez! For biased that I'm I would say: if it really makes you feel "at home", it's something very important to mind... Well, try to play in one Warmoth, some guys here on forum have one...
-
Fernando, have you put your Tele together yet? I'm still wondering about that fatback neck...
-
I've chosen this from the Showcase.

Shall I go for it? I really like it tbh.
-
Looks good, but I'm not going to say if you should go for it or not.
So what are you planning? Two humbuckers and a Floyd?
-

Yeah, it's already back trem routed.
-
Fernando, have you put your Tele together yet? I'm still wondering about that fatback neck...
Almost, need to end 100% of the nut, it's on 90% and the wiring...
It's fat... I've few experience in guitars, never played a Gibson, for example... so I can't tell you comparing to others guitars... sorry...
If that international economy crisis end soon, probably in 2010 you'll be able to make a try on it... if last long, god knows when I'll be abroad again

Looks suberb!
It's Canary neck?
Canary with ebony fingerboard sounds very like all maple, as the reviewers told me...
-
Padouk on Alder
Canary with Ebony
-
Looks gorgeous. Go for it.
-
I checked Sims Custom out of the blue and saw I could actually get a decent guitar from them too. £200 cheaper actually..

The angled headstocks are pretty solid. The head itself is attached with a scarf joint, and there's a thicker reinforement 'lip' on the back, just behind where the nut sits. Much more solid than, say, a Gibson headstock.
-
Sims are great, you might wanna go for them instead, also, you'd get alot more options I reckon, it being a smaller company etc.
