I'm looking for a new bridge pickup for my Dean Dimeslime (same specs as the CFH). I'm looking to get a Jon Schaffer sound (Iced Earth). I was thinking maybe warpig for its heaviness, but maybe a ceramic warpig for its additional tightness. But then again, i believe the pickups Jon uses are somewhere around 13K, so maybe something else would be better. Setup is an Engl E530 run through the power stage of a marshall 3203, into a marshall 1965a 4x10 cab.
thanks for the help.

cool, man!
I'm modding my Framus in an attempt to get his sound too
Larry (the guy that make his amps) promised a new Jon Schaffer signature rack preamp along with his new signature amp
he was using Riff Raffs, Black Dogs and a purple zebra set in his transblack Les Paul Studio that I suppose that are Rebel Yells
now he's using his white WCR Jon Schaffer Icebuckers in most of his Gibsons, and they are around 9 or 10k only, alnico 5 magnet too
he seems to prefer the hot PAF vibe over high output
I'm using a Cold Sweat and I love the crushin' n' crunchy palm mute response, and it's already way hotter and tighter than the pickups he uses
no need for warpigs...
-
is it just me, or do you need a really nice setup to get an awesome metal sound like Schaffer's out of low output pickups? I just seem hesitant about buying a low output pickup for such a thick, heavy metal sound like that. Now, i've only heard one BKP, the miracle man, so i could be (and 95% probably am) completely wrong, and i'd just like some assurance on that. I just don't want to buy a low output pickup, and then find out the only way Schaffer gets it to sound so heavy is because of the super expensive setup (which is obviously true, but to what degree).
and if the low output is the way to go, which one?
-
ask Tim which model he was using in each guitar
but I'd wouldn't go any higher than the cold sweat
maybe a riff raff with a strong booster
I don't know if he uses boosters, but they are essential for me
I was using a wylde overdrive with cranked output and zero gain
now I replaced it with a vintage maxon equalizer as a mid booster, and it sounds even thicker than the wylde

really??? like ripping death metal mutes too?
-
Well I know Tim put an uber sinner in one of Jons guitars, and he loves it - the U-Sinner is about as hot as a warpig, and with the same sort of voicing, but single coil tone.
To get iced earth but be able to do ripping DM mutes as well I'd get a painkiller.
-
well, i guess i'm definitely going to have to ask tim about this one, there seems to be a lot of options/opinions. i do have a wylde overdrive as well, so i'm glad you got a good tone out of that. and slightly off topic, but not really, tim never did any recording or anything with IE did he?

nice!
the wylde is a damn good booster and a very underrated pedal
I like it better than any tube screamer type for boosting
it pushes the amp and mids a lot harder without stealing the low end
I just wish it had a bit more output, like my maxon EQ or the MI audio crunch box
but it's still a huge booster and improves a lot my Framus tone
specially because I use only the crunch channel and I never pass gain 6
I think Tim recorded or at least composed something "wicked" for Framing Armageddon

never saw him using anything different from a Les Paul on the last years tours
I'm curious about what the hell he uses to get that level of tightness and crunch from low output pups
the Larry Dino is a monster amp, but damn... he must have some kinda of booster
really??? like ripping death metal mutes too?
not my style, but that's definitely possible
but it sounds more "thrashy" than "deathy" (that sounded extremely ghey )

You just wanna argue with me, dontcha! ;)
I'm just saying what Tim told me on the phone once when I was ordering my sinner. He was in iced earth for a while!

always you two

man, you're going paranoid
I'm not arguing, I'm just saying he's not using anything different from Les Pauls live
he has a lot of guitars, but definitely he suffers of chronic Lester Polsfuss obsessive-compulsive disorder :crazy2:

i actually don't recall jon ever playing a Les paul... i'm fairly certain he does, but every video i watch i never see him playing one.

look for any 2006-2008 live video or picture
he uses all kinds of les pauls
studios, standards, classics, goldtops, customs, gothics
even Epiphones!
I know he has flying V's, bc riches, sgs (that supreme he used on demons & wizards is awesome) and strat type guitars, but now he's using only les pauls at shows

oh, wasn't aware of that. i guess its because all the video's i watch are from alive in athens.
i wonder if i should put this pickup in my LP since i'm going for his sound... will it be that big of a difference between the two guitars?

what is your les paul?
I actually think the flying V could be better for that, if you get a bright pup
but if they're all mahogany, it might not make a lot of difference, but Vees tend to be a bit darker

Oh, I dont doubt you, I', just suggesting that he uses more that that in the studio, or in general finds he can get his sort of sound with more than that.
I'm niot parano
WHO SAID THAT?
shite, they found me....gotta go!

Jon Schaffer is even geeker about guitar stuff than us
I just found this interview about the last last album and he talks a lot about his signature pickup
he talks a lot about his tastes for pickups
http://www.wcrclips.com/clips/interview_040308.mp3
if his pickup wasn't even more expensive than BKP's, I'd definitely try one
but I don't even have enough guitars for that :(
-
i'm fairly certain all 3 of my guitars are mahogany.
tim's response-
"Schaffer uses low output humbuckers and extremely hi gain amps(Larry Amps)-Black Dog, Riff Raff and even VHII. For the Dean I would go to the Black Dog then set the amp up with as much bottom end as possible and lots of hi end presence, don't scoop the mids out but don't boast them either."

nice
that's what I imagined
did you ask if he boosts the amp input?

no i didn't, probably because i'm not sure what that means. ha, sorry, but how do you boost the amp input?
and i did find one metal clip of the black dog, lucky for me, playing iced earth. sounds exactly what i'm after.
EDIT: wow, sorry, i just woke up...not quite thinking well yet. of course i know what boosting the input means. i've got a wylde overdrive that works nicely, i'll ask tim what he thinks.
-
by using a booster
where's that clip?
EDIT:
just found the clip
pretty nice sounding, but missing tightness and picking attack
maybe the wylde should fix this?
I never had a medium low output pickup in the bridge position to try with this pedal
or maybe Tim can wind a tighter version of it?
-
haha, yeah did you see my edit? it was a late night.
i asked tim if he recommended using a booster, and for any additional tips. i'll see what he says. do you think i should ask him about winding it tighter? does he usually do something like that?
-
so heres a thought: i'm looking for something very tight, but low power, correct? well, my gibson xr-1 (LP) has a factory coil tap switch on it. how do you think i'd make out putting my miracle man in there and then just using the coil tap to drop down the output?
EDIT: ah, one problem, even if that would be a good idea- my miracle man has braided two conductor wiring. there's no way i could get the coil tap to work with that is there...?
-
a coil tapped miracle man will sound like a very trebly single coil, not a PAFF
-
ah, well what do i know. it was a thought. if it makes any difference, i believe the switch on mine cuts out some power, not splits it to one coil. but i'm sure you're still correct.
does anyone know if my dean bridge spacing is the same as my gibsons' bridge spacing would be? is the dean difference because of the FR?
-

Well you could just try measuring it, but I'd guess the Dean with the FR will have spacing at the bridge of about 54mm and the Gibson will probably be about 51mm.
-
Your Gibson does split the coil. Also reduces output aswell
-

does it? oh well. i believe you're right, i always get confused because its called a coil tap and not a split.
how big of a difference will there be soundwise if i used the wrong spacing in a guitar? my problem is this: i have enough money for one pickup, and i currently own one BKP. i want a BKP in my dimeslime, but i definitely want to use the xr-1 for iced earth type stuff. so i was going to put a new black dog in the xr-1, and put my miracle man in my dimeslime, but its spaced for my gibson V.
-
A coil split is a coil tap, but a coil tap isn't a coil split :P
Why not keep the Dirty Fingers, surely they have the aggression for iced earth?
I had mine with a trem on it, and the 50 mm spacing made no difference.
There was a time when humbuckers were all 50mm :O apparently it was called the 70s :?
you'll be fine ;)

yeah what i'm leaning toward now is just keeping the dirty fingers for the IE stuff- they're probably about the same output level.
philly, yeah i will eventually measure it... i just don't have my guitar here with me at college so i'm trying to figure out all my options now before i go home.
ok... so i guess i've got new plans now. the xr-1 for IE stuff. so i guess i'm just going to be going with heavy as hell for the dimeslime. well... warpig would be the obvious choice. but i like to run my amp with a LOT of gain. so would i be better off going with a lower powered pickup? or should i be alright running the warpig through a hot amp?
-
The other consideration is strin gauge. If you're using a baritone (which you're not), or exceptionally thick strings (again, probably not?), then you can get away with hotter pickups. Warpigs will hit you amp hard, but if you've got really thick strings, you'll end up with too much signal and things will get mushy. For standard gauges, you should be fine :)
Roo
-
ok, well what do you consider thick strings? i forget the exact gauges, but i'm going to switch to the D'addario (sp?) light top heavy bottoms on that guitar. standard tuning. my miracle man sounds fine in my V with the high gain, but then again i've never heard a lower output BKP at all, let alone through my amp, so i don't really have anything to compare to.
-
Standard tuning on a normal scale length = don't worry about string gauges! :)
That's one less thing to worry about!
Roo
-
ok, so a warpig should sound just fine through a whole bunch of gain? thats what i was assuming, since i play my miracle man w/ tons of gain, but i wasn't sure how much more output the warpig put out.
-
I didn't find the regular alnico warpig higher output than the miracle man and painkiller
just a bit fatter sounding and more compressed, but the others sounded way hotter
-

ok, thanks for the help guys. i guess it'll be a warpig. does anyone know how much extra it'll cost for me to get a spare pickup cover? i want one of those new black ones to go on the bridge pup on my xr-1.
