bridge pickup for Dean CFH
« on: October 15, 2008, 10:02:26 PM »
I'm looking for a new bridge pickup for my Dean Dimeslime (same specs as the CFH). I'm looking to get a Jon Schaffer sound (Iced Earth). I was thinking maybe warpig for its heaviness, but maybe a ceramic warpig for its additional tightness. But then again, i believe the pickups Jon uses are somewhere around 13K, so maybe something else would be better. Setup is an Engl E530 run through the power stage of a marshall 3203, into a marshall 1965a 4x10 cab.
thanks for the help.

cool, man!
I'm modding my Framus in an attempt to get his sound too
Larry (the guy that make his amps) promised a new Jon Schaffer signature rack preamp along with his new signature amp

he was using Riff Raffs, Black Dogs and a purple zebra set in his transblack Les Paul Studio that I suppose that are Rebel Yells
now he's using his white WCR Jon Schaffer Icebuckers in most of his Gibsons, and they are around 9 or 10k only, alnico 5 magnet too
he seems to prefer the hot PAF vibe over high output

I'm using a Cold Sweat and I love the crushin' n' crunchy palm mute response, and it's already way hotter and tighter than the pickups he uses
no need for warpigs...

is it just me, or do you need a really nice setup to get an awesome metal sound like Schaffer's out of low output pickups? I just seem hesitant about buying a low output pickup for such a thick, heavy metal sound like that. Now, i've only heard one BKP, the miracle man, so i could be (and 95% probably am) completely wrong, and i'd just like some assurance on that. I just don't want to buy a low output pickup, and then find out the only way Schaffer gets it to sound so heavy is because of the super expensive setup (which is obviously true, but to what degree).

and if the low output is the way to go, which one?

ask Tim which model he was using in each guitar
but I'd wouldn't go any higher than the cold sweat

maybe a riff raff with a strong booster
I don't know if he uses boosters, but they are essential for me
I was using a wylde overdrive with cranked output and zero gain
now I replaced it with a vintage maxon equalizer as a mid booster, and it sounds even thicker than the wylde

Well I know Tim put an uber sinner in one of Jons guitars, and he loves it - the U-Sinner is about as hot as a warpig, and with the same sort of voicing, but single coil tone.

To get iced earth but be able to do ripping DM mutes as well I'd get a painkiller.

well, i guess i'm definitely going to have to ask tim about this one, there seems to be a lot of options/opinions. i do have a wylde overdrive as well, so i'm glad you got a good tone out of that. and slightly off topic, but not really, tim never did any recording or anything with IE did he?

nice!
the wylde is a damn good booster and a very underrated pedal
I like it better than any tube screamer type for boosting
it pushes the amp and mids a lot harder without stealing the low end
I just wish it had a bit more output, like my maxon EQ or the MI audio crunch box
but it's still a huge booster and improves a lot my Framus tone
specially because I use only the crunch channel and I never pass gain 6

I think Tim recorded or at least composed something "wicked" for Framing Armageddon

never saw him using anything different from a Les Paul on the last years tours
I'm curious about what the hell he uses to get that level of tightness and crunch from low output pups
the Larry Dino is a monster amp, but damn... he must have some kinda of booster

really??? like ripping death metal mutes too?

not my style, but that's definitely possible
but it sounds more "thrashy" than "deathy" (that sounded extremely ghey )

You just wanna argue with me, dontcha! ;)

I'm just saying what Tim told me on the phone once when I was ordering my sinner. He was in iced earth for a while!

man, you're going paranoid
I'm not arguing, I'm just saying he's not using anything different from Les Pauls live
he has a lot of guitars, but definitely he suffers of chronic Lester Polsfuss obsessive-compulsive disorder  :crazy2:

look for any 2006-2008 live video or picture
he uses all kinds of les pauls
studios, standards, classics, goldtops, customs, gothics
even Epiphones!

I know he has flying V's, bc riches, sgs (that supreme he used on demons & wizards is awesome) and strat type guitars, but now he's using only les pauls at shows

oh, wasn't aware of that. i guess its because all the video's i watch are from alive in athens.
i wonder if i should put this pickup in my LP since i'm going for his sound... will it be that big of a difference between the two guitars?

what is your les paul?
I actually think the flying V could be better for that, if you get a bright pup
but if they're all mahogany, it might not make a lot of difference, but Vees tend to be a bit darker
