Title: American Football in London!!
Post by: kellar on October 26, 2008, 04:44:06 PM
Do you guys care?

I am quite excited, it is always fun to see how Europeans react to our sports. I have been watching some pregame analysis today and it seems that the general consensus on our side is, "Why are we doing this?" Asking a team to travel across the pond in the middle of the season is a little ridiculous.

Anyway, just curious how you guys feel about it. :D

Sorry, prefer rugby, for that sort of thing.  Then football, cricket, even darts.

Do you guys care?

I don't want to go into a big rant about it, but no!

I don't "get" American sports, they all seem to have that thing of constantly stopping the clock whenever anything happens - so there are "10 seconds" left, but it takes hours.  :?

And there seems to be an obsession with scoring hundreds and hundreds of points - which is maybe why Americans seem to have trouble understanding that a 1-0 or even 0-0 football game can still be really exciting.

+1 My main problem with American Football (apart from the fact that the game seems to be pretty much based on advertising) is that after every tackle, they stop and have a chat for about 10 minutes!

Why do American sports always have more safety gear?
We don't dress up like that for a game of rounders. (relating to baseball, not US football)

Yeah, there's something very odd about seeing grown men playing a ball game dressed in their jim-jams.

I understand your sentiments,
I am not offended by your criticisms,
And, like most Americans, would just assume that we keep our American sports in America!

Do you guys care?

Uh, the goal of the game is to have the MOST points!

Seriously, on the other side, I sure as hell can't drive myself to watch a soccer game. We can all just agree to disagree on this one!
And on the same side, many baseball games finish with scores similar to soccer games, so we DO understand the principle.

Thanks guys. :D

And, honestly, not sure what rounders is- forgive my ignorance. :D

It's what we had to play in school when we were deemed "not good enough" for cricket

I think it's related to "softball" - is that it? A sort of Baseball-lite :D

Opal Fruits ("made to make your mouth water"... sigh)  they changed to Starburst or something, didn't they?

Oh, and the BIG one - the missus added this - Treats, whatever happened to them? (M&Ms).

And the old favourite: "just out to buy some fags, back in a minute..."

To my eternal shame, I have actually spoken to people who refused to buy any goods that had changed their names in Britain to match their worldwide names. Such an odd stance to take.

Yeah, but Treets (spelling!) weren't quite the same as M&Ms.  They weren't multi-coloured and they came in three varieties - peanut, toffee and chocolate.  The chocolate ones were big, the same as Minstrels, not tiny like chocolate M&Ms.

Didn't they ( Treets) melt in your mouth but not in your hand? A remarkable quality for an item of confectionary-pushing the performance envelope somewhat. I used to like those walnut whips-do they still make them?

Correct!  Although I never put it to the test...

I used to like those walnut whips-do they still make them?

I had one (well, two... ) just a few weeks ago.  They're not the same though - the chocolate is thinner and not so intricately layered, and now there's only a walnut on the top, no second one hidden at the bottom like there used to be.  Penny-pinchers.

On the issue of American sports like baseball, just not American Football.   Oh, just looked on Wikipedia and it seems baseball comes from Surrey, so its originally an English game after all.  Cricket is better :)

I dunno. Isn't cricket vs. baseball kinda like Dopey and Grumpy scr@pping over who's tallest? At the end of the day, they'll still need a stool to get the biccies out of the cupboard.

:o Baseball is NOT an English game! An adolescent boy swinging a wooden stick in a remote English courtyard some 200 years ago hardly justifies that point. Blasphemy!!

Well, if our dear Jane mentioned it Northanger Abbey (published before the first game in America) - that settles it! :D

And Philly, I did debate the spelling of Treets with the missus - she insisted it was Treats

I've never had M&Ms, but my recollection of Treets is exactly as yours and 38th. And yes, they did melt in your mouth but not in your hand as long as you didn't push them too far - I can remember when they came out and me and my gran performed rigorous testing on this marketing claim!!

Well that hardly makes it an English game! Not completely convinced of this one yet.  :D

Anyway, we aren't worlds apart are we? You guys have cricket, we have baseball. You guys have rugby, we have American football. You guys have snooker, we have pool. Can't we all be friends?

What do you guys play? 8-ball and 9-ball are the most common with us.

In attempt to seek common ground, I will say that I have grown quite fond of snooker. Although, I find it incredibly difficult. :D

I don't know about pool, but snooker is a fine game.

Tough playing the long shots if you have difficulty getting your leg over, though.

Yes I saw a Whispa display the other day in that fine purveyor of periodicals known as W H Smith and remarked upon it to Mrs 38th who was equally but nonetheless as pleasantly surprised.
In any event, I am not sure that Amercian Football will work here but hey, nothing ventured an all. My son has promised to take me to a game when I next visit him. Not being a great fan of team sports, I shall ensure that I take my Ipod.

What a bizarre and disperate thread...

The cream is different in Walnut Whips now.

And I never liked Wispas.  Quite frankly, the vending machines can keep them.

And America (and Americans, and American sports) have their good points.  My brother in law is an American, and constantly keeps me on my toes by buying interesting and obscute guitar stuff cheap from his mates all over the world.

And he sold me his Orange.

God bless America.

i'm fairly positive that the only reason we don't like each others sports is simply for the lack of understanding how to play.

i've learned to understand rugby (kind of) and i think its a good sport. rugby is becoming a very popular sport in high schools and colleges in the US. i've always liked soccer (football...) as well.

by the way, the philadelphia phillies are in the world series!!! one more win to win it all! (i'm from philadelphia).

oh, and i believe its called the world series, not because baseball is a world sport (well it kind of is), but because the best players from around the world play in it.

I too am a fan of the USA inasmuch as every time I have been there, I have loved it and have enjoyed a warm welcome. I have a few friends there too and my son has made it his home. OK so they go a little overboard with their sports but bless them, they just want to be loved.

Thew  world series is named because it was originally sponsered by the Chicargo World newspaper.  When the newspaper no longer sponsered it, they kept the world bit.  Still doesn't make it any more interesting though.  I didn't think that any sport could be more dull than cricket, but they somehow managed to top it.

I like snooker, it's like golf in the fact that everyone is cr@p at it. Makes you feel better.  I've played on a pro table and it was WAY more difficult than normal club tables, the pockets are much tighter.  I prefer pool though, but can;t get on with the american tables.  It's like playing into buckets on a cloth made of jeans.  I like to smaller tables with tighter pockets a lot more, but I supposed that's just what I'm used to.

I had the american football on for a bit, but queeny and my mate made me turn it off.  Don't mind it too much but probably couldn't watch a whole game.  Rugger - now that's a propper game.  :D Well, that and British Bulldogs, we should have it in the olympics.

This is pretty much what Stephen Fry says on his 'Stephen Fry in America' programme. It's great viewing, there is something about him that I find very entertaining. He didn't think much of Miami though - apparently full of beautiful people that are ugly due to their beauty. I have never been so couldn't possibly comment!

English thing- where they run as fast as they can down a steep hill to catch a roll of cheese. It's actually quite entertaining to see, but there are seem rather serious injuries involved. :D

Sounds quite entertaining...

Anyone else here ever been to Ottery St Mary in Devon on bonfire night?

I've only ever been there once, years ago, I assume they still do it.

It involves p1ssed-up locals, running through village streets packed with with revellers, with open-ended barrels on their backs... (insides coated with tar and on fire, of course)

I thought it was quite amusing until I got stuck in a shop doorway as this flaming tar barrel went past my nose... It wasn't until I got that close that I realised how heavy these things were, how hot they were, and how near to collapse the chaps who were carrying them were

I'm not sure it qualifies as a sport though.
