Title: Anyone got Far Cry 2 yet?
Post by: _tom_ on October 30, 2008, 05:16:09 PM
I just got it and its pretty damn good! The pda/map thing looks a little cheap to me but its nice to use so I cant really complain :P Everything else looks great even without anti-alias on :)

Havent tried the multiplayer yet but spent a good couple of hours on the singleplayer earlier and enjoyed myself, cant beat setting fire to an enemy camp :P

oh and the case looks awesome as well, I got the steelbook (or something) one which looks so cool

better in the sunlight though rather than camera flash..

Yeah, Fallout 3 is out as well but I dont want to buy it yet because I'll just stop playing FC2 :P I havent actually played the others in the series but it looks really good judging by the gameplay videos on youtube.

I've been giving Far cry a bit of a rattle. It's rather good. Sure, it's not the most diverse game ever, but it's properly a sandbox game. The fun comes in engineering the situations to your advantage and playing with the toys you're given.

The IED's are tremendous fun.

I think it may have made my graphics card overheat or something with settings on high because about an hour in it just froze up, screen went blank and then it started working again after a minute or so :\ Apparently the stock fans on my card arent amazing anyway so I might get a better one for it so I can run everything on full with no overheating :) Just going to check it in speedfan though to see what it peaks at.

It did say my graphics card drivers were too old when I first started it up though so maybe it wont do it again now I've updated them.

I've got it on the 360.  After initial disappointment it's now...ok.  The console save system is a major pain in the bell end.  You can only save in gun shops, safe houses or after you complete missions.  Because the game are is so big, if you get killed on a mission you can end up having to start again a 20 minute drive away.

Also the gameplay is a touch repetitive.  I'm only 8% through the single player and it's already a bit tired.  A guy I work with is 80% through the PC version and says it's the same thing all the way through, just getting gradually better guns as you go.

Still, I'll be sticking at it.  I'm determined not to get Gears of War 2 before Christmas.

I want my housemate to get this and Fable but he refuses; saying they'll be cr@p.
Gears of War 2 is going to be fit.

I've played both and think Fallout 3 is better so far, its where I'm dedicating my time to now anyway.

My mate's got a 48070X2 and watching him play them both on his 22inch was immense. Jealous...

Yeah

Had it about a week.

But wont have the internet for at least another week, so I havent been able to play it yet!

Sated my irritation by playing the non-alien levels of Crysis again.

After playing it for a bit more, it does get a bit repetitive/annoying. Its still a great game but it just gets annoying when you have to keep taking out everyone in a guard post to get through, unless you can see some way to get through unnoticed. Wouldnt be so bad if they didnt respawn each time you go back. Gonna try the multiplayer soon, should be fun and pry me away from counterstrike a bit.

Indy, I never got into Gears of War, I just find it so dull. Everyone bums it but I cant get into it. I hate consoles now as well :P

So, I got the internet back and 3 things strike me

1: Its buggy as hell.

2: Its boring.

3: Its really really boring.

4: Iniquitous and vile DRM that I cant get rid of even though I've uninstalled FC2.

What bugs are you finding? I dont think I've noticed anything..

Control. I changed some key bindings and they didnt work in game, and reset to default and then they didnt work either.

oh :? I havent needed to change anything I like it how it is at the minute, but the default ones all work fine.

I also consider securom some sort of hybrid of a bug and malware.

And I consider Crysis to be Far Cry 2. Obviously.

You planning on checking out Fallout 3, MDV?

It's pretty much the opposite in terms of DRM, no cd key needed, no disc needed, and no securom... I miss when all games used to be like this.

I couldnt even finish the Crysis demo, I found it so dull.

Cant say I've had a problem with the DRM stuff, you have to put in a key when you install most games dont you?

That's SERIOUSLY not the issue.

I might well, noodle. It looks pretty cool. Really nice to see they treat their paying customers correctly!!

Tom, the problems are in customer rights, mainly.

To start with securom cant be removed from your computer by anyone with less than advanced PC knowledge. It has nulls in its registry entries that make them non-deleteble. Publishers havent the slightest right to force this material on your PC.

Then, they dont tell you its there. I only knew it was on FC2 after I installed it, when I first ran it. I assume thats when the screen came up for you, too. Thats the first time they tell you that this non-removable extra software is there.

Now, FC2s particular implementation of it is better (you can revoke an activation when you uninstall) but in games like mass effect and spore any hardware change makes you use up an activation. YMMV, but something as simple as another ram stick or even an external hard drive can make secuROM think that the games been copied to a new PC and make you reactivate it. When your reactivations run out (you have 5) you have to go pleaded to the publisher to get them to let you play your game that you bought. This is akin to having every game be on an un-written liscence to use it, rather than it be a purchased item.

You need the activations to play the game so when the publishers server goes down or they go bust, you cant play it. I'm sure all of us still like games that are relics (Homeworld comes to mind for me: if this were true of that, it would never be playable again)

Even with revocations of installations, the continual reactivation scheme is only mistrusting of paying customers. Farcry 2 is already cracked. If you want it for free its so very, very easy to get it, but us ppor saps that actually bought it have to tollerate being treated like thieves, and like we dont own the game we've paid for.

Then theres the fact that, since they know your IP address and PC setup and the EULA is carefully worded to allow them to sell that information on its very possible that this entire thing isnt even for copy protection at all, but gathering customer information without customers permission. Its well worth noting that the free downloadable demo of bioshock had the full version of secuROM on it. If members of the public can crack the game and take securom out, then the devs certainly can, and theres no need to put copy protection on something thats free - so why is it there??

And then theres the damage it can cause to your PC:

There is currently a lawsuit against EA for using this shiteeee

heres some more info

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Securom#SecuROM_v_7.x

I also just found out that crysis warhead has it on as well. I just ordered that! Grrrrrrrr. I suppose its already on my machine now, I may as well play the game :(

Oh, noodle, looks like you cant install FO3 if you have common disk burning software, and it does have securom.

I'm getting sick of this shit. I dont even play games that much. I'm just gonna stick to guitar: I they dont have DRMs :D
Title: Re: Anyone got Far Cry 2 yet?

"The developing corporation Bethesda producing Fallout 3 in an interview assured the public that they would not be utilising any remote-activation DRM but merely the basic disc checking version. However shortly after the release customers discover that this is not true, and instead the game contains a version of SecuROM v7.36 which checks for the disc as previously stated but also has an invasive kernel-mode driver which checks for commonly used CD/DVD writing software on the system and if detected, the installation is aborted. The version sold on Steam does not have this restriction."

:? Bit cr@p. I might just get Fallout 3 on steam then.

doesn't pretty much everyone have some kind of CD/DVD burning software on their computers these days?

if every company started doing this we would all have to run virtual machines for burning software, but then this is quite advanced and to be legit you'd need a licence for a second operating system, on top of this it's putting up barriers to entrying into PC gaming, so technically the industry is killing itself and so such people will stick to consoles

Weird, I have alcohol and Daemon tools running 24/7, I didn't notice anything!

Alcohol 120%, and Daemon Tools are 2 virtual mounting programs, basically essential if you're downloading games... If securom are picking up typical burning software and NOT picking up these, something is REALLY $%&#ed up.

They make a virtual disc drive on your computer, or they have drivers to make your computer think you have an additional disc drive, and then you can download .iso files, which is basically a disc as a file, you can then load that disc-file into the program, and it will tell the computer that you have inserted one of these discs into this new disc drive, which the pc thinks is actually there, but its really just a driver trick, from then on you install the game as if you owned the cd.

Thanks!

Not that I'm gonna do it (unless this DRM absurdity continues) but thats a good explanation, cheers

Its also quite pleasingly devilish.

The reason daemon tools and Alcohol are not causing issues is simply becasue they lie to Securom about their existance.

Another reason (amongst so many) to dislike Securom is that it tends to slow down games, every system call is passed through it's encryption layer, this is also another reason for system instability within Secirom protected games.

This instability is often passed off as gfx & sound card drivers

It's not just the existance of CD writing software that causes blacklisting, simply having an IDE & a SCSI Cd writer installed at the same time causes no end of upset, as Sony say that such a situation is not normal !

I loathed Securom so much that I did at one point write an app for removing it from games a few years ago. I stopped simply because I decided that the games where not worth the money I was spending for testing purposes.

Typically a major update of Securom (according to version numbers) required about 10 minutes to update the decryptor, it was boring.

I felt sorry for the people relying on Securom to protect their products. Doubly so as it only took about 5 evenings to from beginning until I had a working decryptor.

There are guides for removing Securom from your machine (once you uninstall a game) I will post them once I get the time to hunt the links out.

luckily I havent had any problems like that. I did have a crash when I first ran the game and it said my graphics card driver had turned itself off/on but apart from that its been fine.

Will buy Fallout 3 through Steam so I dont have the securom thing messing my install up.

After a few hours play today I like it much more now, since I got rid of the shite assault rifle I was using and started using the sniper for long range then going in closer with my pistol and machete. I just want the deagle now :P
