... I love it :-)
There are at least two other cricket fans on here, and I always find it an interesting topic as so many people are totally confused/bored by the greatest sport on earth :P
So any other willow and leather fans out there?
Flames also welcome, I'm always amused by the tirade of vitriol spewed forth by my work colleague on the subject of crickets sometimes archaic laws ...
A starter for 10 ... Will England get the ashes back?
-
Umm.. dunno, but I'll be there when it happens :D
I'm a Surrey member, so I'll be at the Oval...
I suspect it won't be such a nail biter this time, either they'll fold up or we will, and the series will already be decided by then.
-
One day.
I don't mind cricket too much. Find a whole test match a bit dull, but quite like the highlights.
-
Sorry guys, no love and not much vitriol, but I do find cricket very boring....
....nowhere near as boring, though, as American football. I accidentally watched some of the "Super"( :| )Bowl last night when I happened to turn on BBC1 and saw Springsteen's half-time set. God, cricket's dull but at least it's continuous. They don't stop the clock for 5 minutes every time anything happens. :x

What did you think of the half time show Philly? I thought it was alright - good to see a few old classics in there, not sure if I like his new song though. Sounds a bit half hearted to me.
-
Well, I'm not actually a Springsteen fan, TBH.... but he can certainly put on a show.
I enjoyed it, and as the commentators said afterwards, he made it seem like a proper gig rather than "half time entertainment".
-
I don't mind a bit of Cricket sometimes, even though I don't always understand all the rules and terminology. I watched a game in the Ashes at the SCG when I was in Australia 10 years ago, it was a great day, bloody hot though!
Darren Gough got a hat trick that day.
-
Believe me when I say I've no idea of how it's played or whatever else
-
I do like cricket. I remember playing against some Aussies once - my mate decided to defend his wicket for a solid hour. Nothing fancy, just blocking. Wound the Aussies up a treat. He kept telling them it was the English way.
-
I'll admit it can be a bit dull at times ... I watched South Africa defend all day at Lord's last year, 1 wicket all day. Still, was apparently gripping if you were a Saffer.
Getting into the Twenty20 too, especially as my team (Middlesex) won last year.
But you can't beat a gripping Test with all it's twists and turns ... Kasper gloving Harmison at Edgbaston in 2005 was one of the greatest sporting moments I have whitnessed (the whole match was one of the best ever) ... The slow descent into despair, then bang! He wasn't actually out of course, but far too close for the umpire to do anything other than raise the finger.
-
Sue got me into cricket, we don't watch much, but I do try to watch the home international season, and we've been to a few Hampshire matches and it's been a great day out.
I still don't get half the rules, or the position names, but I've gathered enough to know whats going on (ish).
-
I don't mind a bit of Cricket sometimes,
Me too, especially if it's played somewhere far away from me, and televised on a channel I'm not watching. I can thoroughly cope with several continuous days of cricket that way. :D
-
I have got into as I have got older-I belong to the local cricket club as a social member and watch a few games as it is just a walk away and I can have a cheap pint or three.
-
love cricket... though i'm glad i stopped when i did (when i finished secondary school) because i'm not good enough to play at a higher level, but more importantly was always scared i was going to get hurt. love watching it, though. :)
i can't see england reclaiming the ashes, i mean the aussies gave south africa a good series there, and india too (even though they didn't win- but it was a lot closer than england's attempts!). it doesn't help that the selectors seem to go out of their way to pick a cr@p team.
-
I absolutely love cricket. I'm a member of Middlesex but I'm taking a year off seeing the internationals and the county final this year. I shall see as many county games at Lord's as work permits though. In truth I'm a Northants fan but as I live in London Middlesex are my adopted county.
As to England winning the Ashes? I don't think so. England don't have enough aggression collectively in the bowling department. Watching our seam attack fail to make any inroads into the South African top order last summer at Lord's showed that they don't have the variety to force batsmen to make mistakes. Oh, and we have a captain who can't play one-day cricket. I have the nastiest suspicion that we're back to where we were just before Nassar Hussein and Duncan Fletcher took over, i.e. some talent but no real idea how to apply it and no consistency in selecting it.
-
My only experience with cricket is restricted to watching Shaun of the Dead and the sticky wicket oatmeal stout I'm making for St. Paddy's.
-
the greatest sport on earth :P
I'm sorry, but that spot is reserved for female beach volleyball

I remember playing Cricket at my old school back when I lived in England, and it was so much fun! But since moving so much after that, I forgot how to play, and I don't know of any local cricket teams in America.
-

Haha, you may have a point ...
I am also not sure about the ashes, could be a scratchy seiries with both teams on the down slide at the moment. The recent mess over KP can't help (although a lot of that was made up by the press). I have it from a source at Worcestershire CCC that the main crux of the fallout was over central contracts and the ICL (no great surprise there), and who should bat at no.3. The selectors do seem to be persisting with Bell, who should frankly be much further down the order (He did very well at No. 6 a while back). KP wanted Vaughn back apparently ...
As a Mddsx fan its nice to see Shah getting a go, although not so good as it means our [Mddsx] batting order is now kaput with Strauss and Shah on England duty!
And on a sadder note, RIP Bill Frindall - TMS won't be the same without him keeping Blowers et al from making statistics up!
-
I used to really like going up to the nets and playing there. Lets face it, cricket is only good to play if you're either batting, bowling or wicky. Other than that it's just standing around wearing a wooly jumper in the summer PDT_031
-
Definitely :-) that's why I took up bowling, gives you something to do in the field!
At least in the pavillion waiting to bat you can talk to people &c. ...
Edit: also, as I am half blind in one eye and have no depth perception, I am rubbish at batting :P
-
I fear what I don't understand.
-
^ yeah, i used to hate fielding. didn't help that i wasn't much good at it, but you'd stand for two hours and the ball wouldn't come near you, then when you finally nodded off, one would come at your head... :(

yeah, pretty much.
i really think they should dump cook. i mean, he's shite. he take about 600 balls (slight exaggeration, but not by much) to get about 40, then when he tries to speed up because he's allegedly "in", he gets out. by this stage the entire england team has died of boredom (or they're under pressure because of time), which affects the rest of the innings. what's even more worrying is that he's apparently being groomed as a future captain. :?
-
Oh jeez... have you seen the score from Jamaica?? (73-3 off 31 at time of writing this...)
Normal service resumed

I'm not into cricket myself but one of my customers is a pretty good player : Mark Butcher
Here he is with my old Gibson LP studio Lite

I remember seeing him on some TV show (with that guitar, I think) jamming with Pat Cash (playing his mid-60s Melody Maker).
-
Very cool Feline! Is he as good at playing the Guitar as he is at Cricket?
And <sigh> Andy, not looking good is it. 202-5 ... A bit of a recovery from KP, but we are crawling ... I guess they had to be careful after losing a load up front. A bit of an odd team too ... Sidebottom back, and Broad who is almost an all-rounder but not quite good enough at either discipline ... he'll probably get a century and take a 5'for now I've said that!
I still live in the hope that Harmison will magically recover his '04-'05 form.
But I fear that is just wishful thinking ...
-
^ ^ ^ sweet :D (about mark butcher)
^ yeah, that's the problem. i'm still hoping simon jones comes back
nice to see cook's up to his old tricks... 4 runs off 20 balls (i think)...
pietersen too (out on 97 trying to get 100 by hitting a 6), but it's hard to complain when he's their best batsman by far...
-

well, i'm not actually a fan of ANY team game/sport, but i have usually a lot of fun playing soccer (well, i'm absolutely terrible anyway - all i'm quite good at is bearing on a running opponent hitting mostly his legs and torso but sometimes the ball too... i'm an assault defender... :P)...
cricket and american football (and baseball, for that) have the common problem (at least in my opinion, but i don't know enough cricket to be sure) (all i know about it is that i will never understand how it works...) to have A LOT of weird rules... you can play soccer almost everywhere, you just need a ball! that's why it's so fun to play and (sometimes) fun to watch...

+ oo (that's supposed to be a moebius ring)
-
256/7
And the tail collapse begins ...
dheim ... I'm sure there is a 'ring' gag somewhere between your moebius comment and that ladies posterior.
But I'm not going there ...
-
Hmmm... 311 for 8 at lunch sounds a bit better
This time yesterday I thought we'd be lucky to get 250!
What we need is a party piece 40-50 from Harmison. All out for about for about 380, and 3 quick wickets before tea... :D
-
^ ^ oh, i get it now, he meant "+ infinity"
318 all out... not too bad, considering.
-
318 all out... not too bad, considering
Considering we're rubbish!
-
And considering the Windies reached 160-1 by the close!
Perhaps Harmie will take 5 wickets in a blinding opening 2 or 3 overs tomorrow morning
-
We can but live in hope ...
This cheered me up though:

Apologies to our Australian forumites, but when it coems to cricket you are the old enemy ... :)

"Australia have slid to their fifth consecutive defeat, that too at home."
:D
Apologies to our Australian forumites
+1
But at least they're getting some idea of how we Poms feel most of the time
-
Hey! Just noticed that was my 999th post...
So this must be my 1000th
Rah!
EDIT: And suddenly I'm a "Welterweight" (how do BKP know I still haven't shed the xmas pounds yet?)
Do I get a free pickup or something as well?
-
Considering we're rubbish!
yeah, more or less.
hmmm, sarwan's just out. though chanderpaul will probably hit 600. probably best to just try to get the dude at the other end out...
-
Maybe we should go back to bowling at people heads rather than the wickets
-
he'll probably get a century and take a 5'for now I've said that!
Well, I was half right :-)
Draw ....
-
That's what I was saying to the missus last night - either it's a draw... or one team is gonna be really embarrassed!
-
Here's something I never wanted to read on cricinfo's commentary:
"What a start by West Indies. Here comes England's saviour, Ian Bell. This is his moment. England need a fighter..."
Sink or swim time I guess!
This referrals lark is a bit of a pain too, especially as I think with the first one used it turned out the umpire was right all along and the video referral ref got it wrong ... lol.
-

Ho hum... less than an hour later... and it looks like one team is gonna be embarrassed
-
yeah, england appear to be in serious trouble.
-
Oh dear me.
Revenge for that 47-all-out we had them for in 2004 it would seem ...
-
Blimey, I turn my back for about three hours and the sky's fallen in. 51/8 - looking classy England, very classy.
-
Epic Fail.
Lost by an innings and 23 runs ..
-
Oh, I beg your pardon, 51 all out. Enough, I'm going to have a drink.
-
I wonder how those Indian teams who just spent $3,250,000 on three of the England players in that match are feeling right now :-)
-
^ true, but they also spent quite a bit of money on shah, bopara, etc. who should have been on the team. and petersen is worth the big bucks, at any rate.
yeah, england appear to be in serious trouble.
I said that when they were about 15 for 3. apparently it was an understatement...
-
Just logged in this morning to find the result - we were 5 down when I last looked on ceefax last night.
I must admit that when I last posted, I did think we were going to lose by an innings at that point, but didn't want to put it in writing, just in case it came true
I was at Lord's for all of the test in 2004 where we did them for 50-odd in the second innings. That was a stunning afternoon... so I can just imagine what it felt like for the Windies and their supporters :D
But dear oh dear!
I'm not convinced it's as bad as all that (once we get over the "it should have been a draw, WTF were you lot doing?!?") - when a team gets rolled over, it really does get rolled over.
That's one of the reasons I prefer Test matches and 4 day county games. It's a big long battle, like a game of chess - it might look boring 2nd session 3rd day or whatever, but there's this titanic mental struggle going on... and when one side gets the upper hand and starts causing real damage, the other side might well throw down their weapons and run away, just like a real battle...
Luckily it's not a real battle though, and it's only mental scars/injuries...
I assume there's going to be some sort of witch hunt now, in the media and on the web, if nothing else...
How long's this series? I reckon there's a real possibility they might roll us in another innings before we start getting a grip again. I personally don't want us ditching Cook, Bell, etc, before we've been through that though - if they come through this patch they'll be brilliant, and if they don't we can drop them then. If we drop them now, they'll never reach their potential (which I believe is huge), and there's no guarantee that anyone else will do better... (this sort of stuff rubs off mentally on the guys who weren't playing as well).
-
Now I have recovered from the shock, I agree Andy. It is a 4 test / 5 ODI series - I would imagine we'll stick (and should stick) with pretty much the same side next test. These sort of things do happen in cricket, once you start sliding the new batsmen get nervous and the bowling side gets more and more aggressive. I didn't see the footage but I imagine they had 4 slips and a gully in permanently for the quicks, and crowded the bat when Benn was bowling.
Like you say what matters now is a good recovery from England. Bouncing back will give the side confidence, where as failing again could ruin some of the players, I imagine the selectors will be lining up a new side for the 3rd Test if we lose the 2nd one though ...
But it is all part of the ups and down of the long format of the sport - some of the greatest sporting battles have been fought on the square of a cricket pitch over days, both mentally and psychically. No other sport has that, and its why I love cicket! :-)
-

"psychic ball-tampering..."
Perhaps that was what gave us the "reverse swing" edge back 4 years ago, nothing to do with the sweeties in Tresco's pocket after all??
-
i don't agree that we should stick with the same side. At least a couple of players should have been selected for this first game, if you ask me. shah and bopara deserve their shot (how many chances has strauss had, for example? last winter in NZ he was apparently on his last chance, now he's captain, WTF?), and that's before you even consider guys like mascarenhas (no idea how to spell that  ), samit patel etc. who have done nothing wrong, yet are dropped and/or forgotten for guys who have.
I also agree that there'll be a witch-hunt, which i don't agree with. Apart from anything, they always settle on the wrong targets (and the more i see it, the more i think it's not incompetence, it's actually intentional- politics etc.)- everyone's calling for bell's head, what about cook? he's utter cr@p, he takes about 4 hours to get to about 40, tries to speed up (which he apparently can't do) then gets out for about 50. bell at least looks like he's trying to score runs- with cook you're on a negative footing before you even start.
don't even get me started on the witch-hunt about monty. the batsmen get chance upon chance, and if the bowlers have one bad match, they're out on their ear. maybe monty would have taken 5 wickets if he'd been bowling against the england batsmen...

I can't help it, I have a thing for battling Wizards :P
The game has never been the same since they banned the use of precognition when calling the toss back in 1894 ...
