Noooo!

I can't make it - I have filial duties to perform that day :(

And I so wanted to see Johnny's Koch...

Now we need a flash motor like Twinfan's to park outside!  :)

I've got a Mazda 6 turbo diesel, It's silver, has dents in it and very dirty wheels!

Don't worry Andy if you cant make it we can do pics and videos with our cameras! I'll be sure to get some gratifying close ups of my Koch spewing forth its Db's from its four pumping cones!

I want you to hear this fuker on 120 watts no attenuation, ultra low speaker damping on 4 ohms. With the warpigged Schecter or Miracle Man Charvel Bring a chunder bucket as it pounds the liver and other internal organs!!

Then the sweet jazzy tones of a neck pickup.

Anyway I'll bring

Charvel Model 6 MM/TS

Schecter Warpig/MQ

Feline Lion Rebel Yells

Strat with IT's

Richwood LP with Cold Sweats (this is a good example of pimping!)

Pedals, HBE Dos Mos, Power Screamer with fat boost, Telenordia Kompressor, Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah, an old EH little big muff from the 70's, i've got an old cry baby but it makes noises, i had a new pot fitted, but not used it much so it may just need breaking in so to speak.

BBE Sonic Maximiser.

I can't wait this is just what I need to give me a lift1 My bruising should have gone down a lot by then from my recent accident so I should be ok for a good jam!  :D :D

Thanks for sorting this out today gwEm!!

I'll be kickin' and screamin'.

And trying to avoid playing anything.  I'm also living in fear of the mighty emissions from Johnny's Koch.

I'm tempted to come along.

Not much flash gear to bring along though.  I could bring the Orange, possibly the RAT Little Giant too.

Nailbombed Charvel?  Muled Yam SG?

Mark.

I was just thinking we needed to do a 'North style' BKP meet. I should be able to attend, providing I can that saturday off work, but that shouldn't be a problem as i've got holiday to get rid of anyways :)

Think i might bring the new Klipp/Plexi Superlead, and maybe my Charvel (what model is yours MrBump?), i'm just about to order a VHII for it, so i should have time for it arrive and get it installed.

So, three Charvels, a Nailbomb, a possible VHII appearance and a Miracle Man/ Trilogy Suite, cool!

Ok shall we bring some backing tracks on mp3 players and run them in to the PA?

We could bring a few each and work out something for everyone.

I might be able to make it - although the north face of the Thames is always a worry for me, better pack my Kendal mint cake - what guitar would you want me to bring (on the Tube so only I can only carry one):

Fender Baja Tele with Blackguards
Fender Esprit with mules
Fender strat with Mother's Milks
Squier JV strat with Apaches
?

Or are they not quite METAL enough for you  :D

In my hierarchy of flash-motorness, I'd say grey scores lower than metallic blue.  Probably.

Mines an ST Custom, very stratty but with a new scratchplate and 2 Nailbombs.

Lovely guitar, even better since Jonathan set it up nicely for me.

Mark.

Great :) Mine is a Model 4, so at least we won't have 2 of the same guitar there then! I'd like to try out it with the nailbombs- the NB that i have in the bridge of a guitar just doesn't really do it for me, but it could be the guitar.

The solo right in the middle of the clip (starting at 1m56) is interesting, sounding like a wierd combo of hendrix, roth, malmsteem and van halen. not sure it quite flows musically, but his playing is amazing, absolutely top technique!

Thats exactly it with him he switches from one style to another, just like that. I heard him playing hendrix style stuff but using greek scales it was mental, and it was right in front of me, thats another good thing about lessons with him, seeing him flying around the neck and not even concentrating on it, so effortless and he is only in Willesdon Green in west London.

Get a second hand box from a scr@p yard, there a piece of piss to fit, just run your car up on some ramps and secure the rear wheels so it doesn't roll back. Take the prop out, unbolt the box and use a trolley jack to support the weight. Then do the same in reverse to fit the new one. Its about a mornings work, using a trusty Haynes manual.
What car is it? Anyway you'll make it to the studio but your clutch will start to wear quicker than usual.

It's a Golf- i've got the ol' Haynes for it, doesn't seem to be much more than what you said really :) I'll have a look into it, we've got ramps and a trolley jack, so it'd 'only' be a case of getting the right gearbox.

Will: I'd say bring it along! I for one would like to try the Kahler- i don't get on too well with the floyd on the Charvel that i'm bringing, so it'd be nice to try a Kahler to see if i prefer them :)

They're front wheel drive I think. Hmmm...I'd get the right box and just pay a mechanic to fit it for you. Very tricky buggers front wheel drives!

Toying with the idea of driving there, which would mean I could bring my 2x10 Sidewinders. I'm thinking they would provide some interest as not many have heard them, and 10 inch speakers would provide a difference?

I'm guessing Vintage & Rare... almost the only shop worth going in anymore!

btw, could you bring your Koch Loadbox along? I'd be interested in hearing how it sounds; my degree thesis is based on attenuators and direct recording, so it'd be handy :)

btw, could you bring your Koch Loadbox along? I'd be interested in hearing how it sounds; my degree thesis is based on attenuators and direct recording, so it'd be handy :)

Oh that V&R! Well as the crow flys it's not far but in terms of driving a lot of traffic jams so don't worry!

It was already on the bring along list Oli. Sounds like I can learn some things from you!

I'm really looking forward to this meet!

You can stick me down for available, at the moment. It is a Saturday and all so I don't think I'll have any trouble getting there.

I'll bring my infamous Indie along. And my camcorder too.

You should see the thing I have to drive, 400 bhp Cat Diesel Foden 8 Wheeler Rolonof. 15 feet high with 12 gears.
Mind you it has good speakers and they came out of an skip that emptied in the yard! Transmit on 107.7 fm to the radio from the ipod and all that big stuff doesn't matter anymore.  :) Choose from 10,000 tunes.

Don't let it get to you.

Yes Denmark Street is next to TCR Tube.

Well it's swings and roundabouts as to which is the nearest alternative. Angel is a bit of a hike down City Road. Barbican is more as the crow flys, if you take an A-Z and follow the back streets from Aldersgate Street out to Old Street Roundabout.

Well that sounds good. I've used Old St on Sat nights before. There are so many trendy bars in the area reliant on that tube station. When i saw that on the map, I thought it was a bit strange. Didn't think to check though! The lack of sleep i'm experiencing at the moment is leaving me rather confused!  :?

Diving in London on a Saturday shouldn't be too bad, but if you are going to be drinking then thake the tube or a bus.  I drive in London all the time when I am in England, but I have lived there a couple of times (if you add up all the time it comes out to more than 5 years, and I used to drive a lot). Of course it helps if you know where you are going!  If you want to try scary places to drive, Rome in rush hour is pretty interesting, especially if you don't know where you are going!

Well, i've got a missed delivery slip here, so tomorrow i'm going down to the post office to collect it- i hope it's the VHII :) I think i can get it wired in within a week and a half ;) I'm looking forward to trying it too, the SD JB that's currently in there just doesn't really cut it for me.

I'll let you know tomorrow if the package is the pickup, it should be, I can't remember ordering anything else!

I'm looking forward to this, looks like we should have a nice selection of pickups- i'd like to try out the singlecoils, as i'm building a strat (or two!), but i've never had one before, so it's fairly new territory for me :)

Hah nope, none of that kinda stuff :p

Was indeed the VHII, got it installed just now... sounds great, appears to be a good match for the Klipp, the mids and highs really cut through, and even though the amp is quite 'loose' the pickup tightens it up nicely :)

Well as for backing tracks or jams you could bring an ipod or mp3 player/ CD with those on. I've got two headphone to phono plug cables to hook them up to the PA. I'm bringing a few on my ipod. Twinfan kindly sent me a load of Blues Headlines jam tracks form Guitarist on a CD last week so we can all have a go with them. Or bring some more metal ones if thats your bag. Its up to you Dave!

How about learning All My Life, by the Foo Fighters? Thats a twin guitar tune. If you look at the tabs there is a horrible chord in there that never goes to plan but I found an alternative shape which does.
You can bring your bass if you want but you have some serious 6 stings that you could bring too  8)

As for lube and towels, well if thats your thing man then don't let me stop you!

I've got out the third eye improv' paper work. There is a lot of it. I'll bring it along for you. I would copy it all for you gwEm but my movement is still quite limited at the moment. I'll do the technique stuff though.

You should have the 3 hour lecture he does on this, you'll come away feeling frazzled!

Two step bends is why I use 9's. I generally pull them around a lot and just got used to them really.

I get confused by "two step bend" - do people mean "2 frets worth" (ie one tone) or do they mean two tones? I always assume the first...

Anyway (assuming the first), I think I'd be doing 4 step bends if I tried a guitar with 9s on!!

I'm quite happily bending a full tone (even down on the second fret) with 11s, in places I even use a tone and a half... at the moment I'm working on trying to keep 2-string full tone bends in tune. Eg 2nd/3rd string at the 7th fret (D/F#), bend them both to obtain E/G# in tune...

Some people might be thinking "why?" (the neighbours probably are)

I think the latter - Americans always call a semitone a half step and a tone a (full) step.  Not that Johnny's American, o'course.

So 4 frets.  I think.  I'm confusing myself now.  :?

Go for the middle ground - 10s.

I've got them on my Feline Lion. In another thread they were saying 10's suit a Les Paul better and think thats right.

Well I meant two frets. Anyway doing that with 11's is Sadomachocism! It must work against you playing for long periods of time?

I don't know, doesn't seem to affect me. Anything less now seems somewhat floppy. I can cope with 10s, but I suspect 9s would be crazy for me. Still, you do seem to get used to whatever you've got after a an hour or so (this is based on switching between fender/gibson scale lengths and high/low actions).

But I much prefer the sound/feel of bends with 11s - seems to be more meat to it...

Anyway, over my, er, "career" I've always been told I have very strong fingers in comparison to other men  One lady described me as "violently gentle" in that department - this was a good thing apparently... (and I was only using 10s back in those days )

gwEm, I think we're gonna need a bigger boat!

i'll see what i can do about that tomorrow..

this threads taken a bit of a divert! so i'll write something about the last few days of bkp-related activities:

last sunday i hooked up with phil for a very tasty brunch and guitar chat!
last wednesday i boozed it up with denim'n'leather and had a pretty passionate discussion and a nice chat about priest
last friday i got back, and loaded a new EMG in my feline for the synthetic metal tone. played a gig in the evening with the feline (great axe!!) through my sansamp, sounds and plays just like i want it to, punchy as hell, and really smooth neck
yesterday popped by wez's place to pick my strat up - its well tasty now its been pimped to the max - special post about this at some stage. played a gig with it in the evening and i'm well pleased.

Is it going to stay that way then? I remember you were having a hard time finding the right pickup for that one. Had quite a large neck for a Feline too, nice guitar.

last sunday i hooked up with phil for a very tasty brunch and guitar chat!
It went more like this:
Cajun Brunch (I got gwEm to try Catfish and Crawfish)
Guitar Bar in Hoboken where I had to pick up my repaired 1918 Washburn Parlour Guitar.  gwEm saw Hughes and Kettner Metal Shreder (which I had mentioned to him), and he tried it plugged into a pair of greenbacks in a BluesBreaker reissue.  I wanted to try an analog chorus too.  Anyway the end score was gwEm 0, me, Metal Shreder, Big Jam chorus, 2 sets of Elixir Acoustic strings, Steel for slide and the acoustic I came to collect!
Back to my place where we tube swapped the Metal Shredder and my Ceriatone JTM45.  Ceriatone now has one GE 12AX7, one Sylvania 12AX7 and Groove Tube 12AX7M phase inverter.  Metal Shredder has reissue Mullard and Tung Sol (I think)!
By now it was getting later and so we ordered sushi for dinner - more new tastes for gwEm.
When he left the snow storm was just starting (around 15-20 cm overnight).

I have to say the Metal Shredder sounds great in spite of its name,

Isn't that the case with most old amps though? they are meant to be 50 / 100, but the transformers were bigger than the amp needed and could put out more clean headroom and then clipping they could put out up to 200w.
That noticably stopped with the JCM900 IMO

 I've been thinking about it all afternoon. I'm expecting some dough from the accident I had. Plus I could sell the Powertone II for a good price. The Supernova is designed for the same cab I have plus it can be used in stereo with a second cab. It would be good to have all that control over the different tones available. God the floor space for all those foot switches is going to be big!

When you come out of the tube Will, walk north into City Road. Take the right fork, East Rd, which is a big no entry (one way coming towards you) Turn right at Brunswick Place, Turn Left into Corsham St.

How big is this room to be honest

I don't have earplugs, and I don't really want to go deaf, lol.. is it possible just to pop in or something? I need to go to Jonathan's to drop off and have him see to my seven-string.

And I need to do some shopping (buy a birthday card) for the girlfriend so it all fits in nicely.

So if all my answers are correctly fulfilled to my satisfaction I may actually be coming!

Will feel a bit awkward with me being:

1. Not English (I think it counts as a reason)
2. I play mostly metal and.. pretty much don't know a lot on theory, etc.
3. Er- .. I guess only two reasons then.

thats not a valid reason

2. I play mostly metal and.. pretty much don't know a lot on theory, etc.
i'm bring a Painkiller Steinberger and an EMG loaded V! i don't exactly play folk music mate.. and look at all the Charvel SuperStrats!! pretty sure we'll be playing mostly metal of some form

3. Er- .. I guess only two reasons then.
ok valid reason - stay at home :)

nah - bollocks to that mate, come down and lets put a face to the name.

1. Not English (I think it counts as a reason)

You're Irish aren't you? By which nature you should really count yourself as British ;)
Unless you're from the Southern part. I really shouldn't worry about it, and I won't put my nationality down as British on ANY form :P I be English / Farmer.

I don't have earplugs, but managed to find some ear muffley things for machinery use, think that will do me nicely.

I don't know too muc htheory neither, and my technique has gone downhill too since stopping with the shredding because of wrist pains about a year ago. So you are one up on me there

For all those getting the tube, you want to leave Old Street station via Exit 1, and from there, it's literally a couple of mins walk (scouted out the place today as I was at uni just around the corner) :) I believe that the building has a black front and a black door- didn't see any signs, other than one saying 2A, so I guess that's it.

Looking forward to it!

I'll have my Indie, currently Cold Sweat/Warpig, might change out the neck for a Miracle Man.

And if I get a request by tonight for me to bring my seven string I will but I doubt Jonathan will do it there and then. Maybe he'll do something special if I say its for the BKP meet :P

I'd be up for some 7 string action! I was thinking about bringing my fanned-fret 7, but the frets are needing a  dress, and i don't have time to do one. (Next meet we have, i'll have a fanned-fret finished that i can bring, i promise :))

That was great! Nice to met you all. Thanks gwEm for sorting it all out, great studio.

It was deafening in there at sometimes but in a good way. Twinfan had a good idea to suggest the pub with Philly, A Dave, Will and Elliot. The rest of us stayed in the studio and swapped over when they came back.
We were drowning out the PA most of the time so the backing tracks were hard to follow but we had some noisey fun with them. There were some good guitar players here today. We found young Jonny outside the pub too  :D
He had been down to Feline and came back up for a jam.

Metal was the music of the day! It was good fun. We should go a for a mellow theme next time.

i don't believe you guys got back so fast, just had a drink up wth phillyq, oli and johnny 'metal shredder' followed by kebab action.

none of johnny mac's photos look too flattering ;)

but yeah, my favourite axes were my emg v-line and my slowhand strat, followed by afgan's ibanez, and will's paul. got some great tonal ideas from everyone. twinfan's PRS was f_cking wicked too actually... rosewood neck \o/ (pure win as crazy joe would say).

ampwise, johnny's koch was pretty amazing, but the only 120w beast i was interested in was oli's klipp - can't believe twinfan sold it to him at that price!

next time my sansamp rack and steinberger will make an appearance.

big up to everyone who turned up... that was pure chaos, but somehow totally phresh :)

Was a cool evening, just got in myself (only just- had to run across the concourse at Victoria with my amp)... good to put more faces to names :)

Gear highlights for me were:

Mule in the neck of Elliotts' Fender Espirit
MQ in the neck of JohnnyMac's Schecter (MQ is now up on the list of pickups to next get :))
EH Small Clone belonging to MrBump (sounded pretty nice to me)
The curly lead was a revelation too, my head is blown at how much of a difference it made!

... Perhaps 360W was a little much for such a small room, but damn was it good fun (and hot!) :)

The Koch is a pure gain monster

Morning! God I ache today! Still not over the injurys but it was worth it. Thanks to you all for helping unload/load all my gear in and out the car. I was done in when i got home but it was well worth it. I'm glad you enjoyed playing with my Koch, it sounded good with Twinfans PRS/VHII. It was good to hear you all dial in different tones. Oli was getting some dark satanic sounds with the MQ in the Schecter. gwEms Strat sounded great too.

Impressed with all the guitars played. gwEm's Strat is incredible! Wez that neck is amazing, I want one!! The Slowhands sound fantastic, that was a first for me with those pickups. Dave's Ibanez is nice too and sounds great with the warpig. Twins PRS is gorgeous and VHII are on my list. Will's Les Paul is a beast! Philly's guitar is nice but I didn't get to try it out as was Elliots. Mr Bumps Nailbomb loaded Charvel is a beast too. Got there was some serious hardware in there yesterday.

It was so hot in there, each time I got a guitar out they were covered in condensation. So that will probably kill off all our strings

Back in Black anyone? What about still of the night? Ah fuk it All my life played with an Everlong backing track!

I think that there were a couple of revelations for me - Afghans Warpigged Ibanez into Johns Koch...  That was just the total definition of Metal!  Gonna have to get me a 'Pig (and a bigger Koch...)

And PQs Espirit was lovely - it was one of those guitars that when I picked it up I just HAD to play jazz!

And unfortunately I've discovered that I like PRS's...  Damn.

Golly, what a photogenic bunch we are!  Forget guitars, boys (definitely a good idea in my case), we should start a boy band!

It all started to go wrong when Philly and gwEm wrapped their arms around the koch to get it out the back door

It's a good job gwEm has longer arms than me or we'd never have pulled it off.

When I carried it back downstairs again with Jonny I think, to be honest, that Koch was almost to big for us to take.

And PQs Espirit was lovely - it was one of those guitars that when I picked it up I just HAD to play jazz!

That was Elliot's Esprit, very nice indeed.  Mine was the LP Junior, which really did seem junior with all that metaaaalll going on.  It looks quite similar to Will's XR1, but must weigh about 4 pounds less!

I really liked Dave's rosewood PRS, and Afghan's Warpigged Ibanez sounded amazing - although both guitars ended up hanging round my knees on their long straps.  Those were the only two I dared to play plugged in.  The Wez neck on gwEm's Strat felt great.  I missed trying Johnny's Lion, maybe next time.

It was very hot and sweaty in there, the way every guitar that had been in a case came out covered in condensation was bizarre!  I must admit that sometimes, with different things being played through 4 amps, and earplugs in, it did feel like being in one of those late-'60s movies where they try to show someone having an acid trip....  :crazy2:

It was a good laugh though, and great to meet everyone.  Even if I did wake up this morning with a blinding headache after a measly 4 pints (I always told you I was a lightweight).  Next time I'll practice and do my spider exercises!

Great day - my ancient ears are still ringing from you metal headz - JM's Koch had a really penetrating sound and it was so hard it literally made my eyes hurt from being in front of it.

Fav guitar - Jonny Feline Lion - the endless sustain could be felt (if not heard) over Afghan playing with Jonny's Koch: apart from that, good to meet you all.  See you again next time.....

A ruby's a curry, Fernando.  So you really would go home drifting on wind!

Oh... My bad... Well, ate indian food once, it's enough to me

But with 8 paints I would be very happy and laughing

I was very happy last night  When I woke up at 3:00am it was a bit nasty. I listened to Mr Bungle for a bit and it was freaky.

Looks/sounds like a classic :D

On a first viewing of the three clips, main highlight appears to be :

1) Oli "fiddles with Johnny's Koch until he's vaguely happy"

Closely followed by:

2) Gwem "looks rock and roll with matching V and appropriate gesture"

It's a shame I couldn't make it this time - even though it looks like it might have panned out a little too metal for my personal tastes... but I'd still have given it a damn good go!

And Philly - I'm with you, four pints and I'm f@cked... Actually, come to think of it, I really would not want to be carrying one of my guitars around on public transport after four pints :o...

The funny thing was, I felt fine (as in only mildly pissed) going home, but woke up at 5.30am feeling terrible.

I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to do the "drink water before going to bed" thing... so it probably would've been better if I'd drunk more!

Always drink water after some alcohol... ALWAYS.... You'll go to the bathroom more times, but you'll feel less like poo

Argh, next time I should really drop in, it's just a few 100 kms so what the heck.

When is the next meet?

Picture wise, that Feline V makes #1 for me, but then it needs BKPs to be politically correct!

We A/B tested the EMG 81 against my Miracle Man, it sounds totally different.

I was thinking for next time.  If there is a lot of interest we could do metal in one studio and everything else in another?

edit - cant bloody make that now as I've just been reminded about some student radio volunteers day thing that I cant get out of now :( epic fail!

Good question!... are we all a bit fed up with each other for the time being?

I was thinking summer might be a good time, what do other people think?

I suppose i could probably organise one in sunny Burton... Not as exciting as a trip to london or manchester but it is at least relatively central with good transport links.  although i dont mind if someone would rather organise it somewhere else - Brum might be a good choice

i would need to fine somewhere we could do it

Summer sounds good to me although the thought of lots of blokes, with valve amps, playing guitars, on a hot sweaty summers day fills me with a little dread.
