Title: Which bass
Post by: donovan.x on March 15, 2009, 01:47:41 PM
I am getting a new bass (when I get my pedals) and again my inability to make a decision is driving me mad so I would really appreciate some input.
The options (all Ibanez)

SR505 http://www.ibanez.co.jp/world/country/frame_uk.html

K5 http://www.ibanez.co.jp/world/country/frame_uk.html

BTB775PB http://www.ibanez.co.jp/world/country/frame_uk.html

Again, any help would be wonderful.

Some day you will regret you didn't get a Jazz Bass.

I dont like Ibanez basses much, but you really need to go into a shop and play all three to see which you prefer.

By look I would get the BTB... But not sure if that is the better way to go...

The SR505 seems to have nice spec too

Trouble is I have been offered a (used) Stingray for a fantastic price but I really want a five string, or do I?

i've got a cort artisan A5, and i have to say that it's a great bass! quite cheap too...

if you look for EXTREME playability you should buy a jazz, though. shorter scale makes it more guitarist friendly... :)

I went for the Musicman, I think for the price I made the right decision and it turns out that it used to belong to the bass player I was in a band with years ago.

Great choice ;   straight for the 'up market' item - whilst you still had the chance to get one at an attractive price.

I love the simplicity of those  - and ( from what I last remember ) the lovely clear tone .

Nice one ...  :D

^ And that is always my (financial downfall) although it was a great deal it still wasn't cheap for a 'second' instrument but once I start looking into things I always end up spending more then I intended, whoops!!!!

We sold a brand new Stingray for £750 last week. Hell of a bargain for the chap that got it.

I really can't see past Precisions, myself.

In a year you'll have forgotten the cost, but still be enjoying the Bass.  :)

Did you mean a Fender Jazz?  It has the standard 34" scale length.  :?

It is a bit narrower at the nut than a Precision, but I'm not sure if that makes it any easier to play.

It does - i vastly prefer the nut width on a jazz

Us bass players go crazy over stuff like nut width and string spacing... it's all a bit mad.

Fair enough.  I have a Precision, and it's pretty hard to play.... but I think basses just are hard to play.

You are not alone there , I am particular about nut width and string spacing ( if given the choice ) - as for me it noticably alters the feel / playablility of the guitar.  :)

sure! i don't know what's the best string spacing, but i've played some guitar that felt definitely wrong..

I assumed he meant shorter scale than the 5 string basses - both my 5 strings have a 35" scale.

Try a jazz, i have a precision and it's noticeably harder to play.

Personally i want something thats just a tiny bit thicker than a jazz neck, but it's near enough perfect for me.

as for string spacing, 16-18mm seems to be the preferred zone for most finger players.

I think that Status might have been a bit out of his budget, haha.

He has a musicman now anyway, which is good enough for anyone!

Yup its out of my friends budget too! He as a 14 year old aria which looks a bit like a musicman the tech was saying which he really loves the neck on but aint so happy with the pickups and electrics so seeing what the options are for new active pickups.

I'm getting ready to build a bass, pro'lly a J neck, P body... It will be four string, but I'm setting it up to run the lower 4 of a 5 string set. I don't use the G a whole lot, and I just need something to record backing tracks with.
So you could sorta have a 5 string, y'know?
