I'm not surprised he's running axe-fxs, I remember seeing him promote guitar rig 2 at somewhere like namm, I've no idea if he still does

I expect next month it will be something else - he seems to change gear regularly...Cornford, Fuchs etc,etc

Although I've got no urges to go out and buy an AXE FX and love my valve amps, I completely agree. I was fortunate (and old) enough to see Peter Green playing live in the Marquee club. His normal amp had packed up and he was playing through a borrowed Vox T60 bass amp (very early 'unreliable' transistor amp - same as Paul McCartney originally used) - totally naff as a guitar amp, but he sounded absolutely amazing - straight in, no effects pedals.

Thing is with the Axe that it is an improvement process. You program better and better patches as you go, and then there are 65 amp models, so if you want "change" it's just a notch on the dial away.

Well, we'll see. From his posts in the Fractal Audio forum he seems pretty committed, also for simplicity and consistency, and he is very thrilled about the kit.

I think the Axe-FX thing is like the Relic issue - you either understand it, and love, it or you don't.  There's no half-way house!

Me, I love Relics as they feel so great to play.  They're the pre-washed denim jeans of the guitar world.  Who cares if they didn't 'earn' their wear like a true old guitar?  I think they're better than old ones as they feel like them but the parts aren't knackered!

And proper valve amps always rule over a computer.  There's just something about that old technology that makes it more raw and rock 'n roll.  Why play a 60 year old design like a Telecaster through a brand new silicon based chip?  Old skool should stay with old skool  :D

If you want to play through a computer, get a SynthAxe, midi switching and a modeller and go the whole hog..........

its all in the smell... paraphrasing Giles from Buffy the Vampire slayer when comparing reading a book in paper form or on a computer

I'm genuinely not bothered what creates the tone, whether tube, SS or modeller.  I'd love an AXe-FX.

Although in my tone quest I've never found the tones I wanted except using tube amps +/- analog pedals. The Axe is the only modeller out there I'd try (not quite ready for the cash outlay to do so at the moment though !), as it is clearly streets ahead of anything else out there in the modelling field.

As for the "relic issue" - I just can't see the point !

You know, Dave, I think you should really try one. Do try it through a power amp/cab rig to have the right feel with it, too. Play with it for a few hours and really tweak on a dry amp/no FX patch, dig into the details of power amp sag, bias, thump, transformer match, etc. to get a feel for the possibilities.

At least then you'd know what you're judging. ;)

i'd really really enjoy an AxeFX... until then i'll stay with sansamp since i like the tone alot (even if i'm not happy about the volume knob clean up). i wonder if the axefx has a sansamp model.

No sansamp, but you can get that flavour by using an amp like the Diezel, VHT, Ueber or Recto and turn power amp sim off. It's pretty mean. Plus, guitar volume behaviour is great, almost like a good tube amp.

I've always found the very best "Guitar volume behaviour" (ie. cleaning up with the guitar's volume knob) to be the best on some pedals. I've owned a fair few tube amps in my time but none have come close to the Blackstone Overdrive pedal for example, in that respect.
I particularly find vintage Marshall circuits really not that good at cleaning up with the guitar volume knob. Although they seem to have developed a reputation as be particularly good for it.
Never tried a trainwreck circuit though. They're supposed to be the dog's 'nads for that !!!

.....sorry for the thread digression !

Fair point, I do need to try one I guess.  But I don't want to  :P

The whole concept doesn't appeal to me.  I don't need one box that can do a Silverface Twin and a Dual Rectifier and a Herbert and a Bassman and a JCM800 and a blah blah blah blah.  I only need one good amp, and my Martamp Orion IS that  :D

The Axe FX sounds great when I've heard it.
Ultimately though, I'm happy to be a ludite

ah but how many amps have you bought and sold before you got to the martamp?

for someone who hasn't found their perfect amp yet the axe-fx is perfect because you don't need to keep buying and selling and I don't wanna know how much money that involves!!!

or you get those guys who have some uber metal rig, get bored of metal and become a rock player and sell it all for a jcm800

it's also good for people who love fiddling with lots of knobs!!!

thats exactly why it wouldnt be for me.

its not that i dont like having the options, its that having all those options gets in the way of me actually playing - which i dont do enough of anyway.  thats why i am getting rid of my GT8 - i really like the amount of processing power on hand but that means i spend more time tweaking than i do playing.  imagine how much worse that would be with something as powerful as the AxeFX

so most of the time now it will be guitar straight into a simple valve amp.. although i do still have amplitube on my PC for  times thats not enough

It's on my list of things to get, I've listened to direct comparison clips where I honestly couldn't tell which was real and others where I prefered the Axe. I like the idea of it too, no one wants to carry several amps to a session.

I have dabbled with various amp sims in the past. I have got a few excellent sounds from some of them but was always disappointed with the response to varying guitar volume (and to a certain extent guitars) as they seemed to be a 'snapshot' of how a certain amp sounds at a certain volume with a certain guitar. The fact that Dweezil (and Hunter!!!) are impressed with the Axe FX would suggest that Fractal have cracked this. If I didn't have 4 valve amps I might be tempted ........ but the thing that attracts and repells me at the same time about the Amp FX is the great flexibilty...I fear I would spend all my time fiddling with it and not playing... then again after a while I suppose once you've got your favourite presets this is not a valid arguement.

Main reason for me to get the Axe was that I loved the sound of the Shiva straight Guitar - Amp - Cab but was never able to reproduce the punch with any effects up front or in the loop. My dream was to get rid of this issue with the Axe, and it came true. Guitar goes into Axe and all else happens in that unit.

On top of that is the flexibility. I couldn't have well kept up with sound expectations with the Metal band using the Shiva head, it just doesn't do that. The Axe does this very well actually, but also more mid heavy sounds too.

Actually one more thing is that amp models in the Axe give me GAS for real amps. I wouldn't have considered a Cornford or an Uebershall, if not the models in the Axe would have been so much fun. Not bought any of those yet, but waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger, just for the fun of it. Yes I am an ampwhore :o)

I wouldn't be without my Ultra, I loved my pedal board and Deville, but this gives me so many great tones and flexibility
