I'm a total n00b, I literally only just figured out that my fave kind of tone that I want to eventually aim for has a name. And that name is DJENT!!!
So, all you Djenters out there, if you had unlimited amounts of money to spend on gear, what would be your ultimate Djent set-up? (Please also note any tonewod preferences for that ultra-awesome axe!)

Podxt/x3 + metal pack
-
Vox Amplug
-
I've been able to get close with my Pod XT, but pretty sure if I had the money, I might go for a Blackmachine with some suitable BKP's and something like a Framus Cobra, but that's first impressions.
The Amplug is an...interesting choice...

Can someone please give me an accurate definition of 'Djent'?

Any half-decent high-gain amp boosted with a tubescreamer-type boost can get close to the the "djent" sound. That said, the ENGL Powerball and Invader are both extremely favourable to that sort of tone. As noted, digital modellers are great for that sound too - the Axe-FX being the top of the pile if you want to go down that route.
Also extremely important is to string fairly light (e.g 10-52s or lower in Drop C) and pick flat to the strings.

Bulb.

It's an onomatopoeic term relating to a specific sound of a palm-muted powerchord. Whereas typical metal tones normally "chug", the addition of lots of upper-mids produces a sound with a different resonance - "djent". For reference, listen to Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve.
Recently the term has been turned into a genre tag for bands that tend to use that style tone (e.g. Periphery, TesseracT etc), though it's worth noting that none of those bands have ever labeled themselves as such.

Sounds like the word really, if you listen to Nolly's band / Meshuggah / Periphery / Bulb you'll kind of get what the name is about, it's the sound the guitars make when played and rigged for this kind of style. That's the info I got from Urban Dictionary and several other sources, like Last FM. Chuck "Djent" into Last and you get countless playlists.
So when you strike the string, instead of "twang" or "dunnnn" or even "chug chug chug" you get a nice sharp "djent!" out of it.
It's fast becoming my fave word, heh. :)

well i know id grab an engl powerball or similar and some painkillers.... obvious i know ...... sorry...

I'm glad you said that. I was thinking it was an age thing. :|
-
i'm not sure if my painkillers do that djent thing, but i think so... to be honest i never thought of it.
well, it seems i was a natural born djenter without knowing it.
:)
-
I'm quite drunk (bday party!!!) but I'd go with
painkiller > axe-fx > vht 2:90:2 > bogner or diezel cab with g12k100s
I've not got a glue about which wood though!!! MDV will know with his tighter than a badger's chuff guitar!!!

PKs and various metal amps can do it. You want a large attack in the highs and a really tight bass.
Irksomely enough the POD is actually very good for it - its undynamic notes-are-on-or-off character helps with djent. Solid state amps can also be good for it due to the razor-sharpness and tightness. A peavey bandit djents surprisingly well!
A good gate is also a very big help to Djentlemen all over the world.

A while ago I played a tele with EMG in it into a Marshall MG and it was great for djent haha.

Good to hear I might be halfway there already, I have a Pod XT, I just need to get it in for repair. Have had a look at Line 6 and already have found a plethora of Djent patches, a couple seem to have been done by Misha himself, which is pretty cool.

I've never used a POD but if memory serves me right he used to boost his POD with some kind of TC Electronics preamp thingy pedal, he probably nicked the idea of Meshuggah but I can't remember what they used to do with their PODs

Misha plugs straight into his POD. ;)

Sweet! I REALLY like the tone he gets out of it, so when my Pod is back from repair I shall be playing with that patch a fair bit, heh. Will upload a clip or two when I get round to it. :D

ah I must be thinking of the Tesseract guy then, and/or Meshuggah
that or I dreamt it!

I'm trying to work out if the sounds I make are Djent-like or not. The jury's out!

from what i heard i'd say no... if i understood what it means djent sound should be a bit more "fluid" and "synth-like", that's not exactly what i have in mind but i can't explain myself better... :)

I'd be interested to hear which bands people consider are NOT 'Djent' that are most similar to 'bona fide' Djent bands! Can you give examples of what makes a sound 'Djent' and what makes a sound 'unDjent'?

do these bands count as djent then:
meshuggah
nile
necrophagist
lamb of god??
-
L.O.G's tone verges on being almost there, but there's not quite enough "dj" to their "ent" to warrant the title in my opinion. :)
Gotta be careful also in classing bands, really. There are some that sport the kind of tone concurrent to a predominantly"djent" sounding band, but I believe only those who would want to be labelled as such would call themselves "Djent" or even use that word to describe their sound. Of course from the listener's perspective there are always going to be those artists who cross several different genre boundaries. It's up to the listener to form their own opinion as to where the bands belong in the "catalogue", if you will.

Djenty, no no and no.
-
then what bands would be a typical djenty band? im confused as to what constitutes a sound being djenty,,,

well, i'm not exactly an expert but i think that messhuggah qualifies as djenty...

the djent sound comes from palm muted 4 string downtuned powerchords ala older Meshuggah albums, it's something to do with upper mids (I think, or I'm talking rubbish)

Periphery, Bulb, some Meshuggah, The Safety Fire, Red Seas Fire, Tesseract, Fellsilent.
