I'm a total n00b, I literally only just figured out that my fave kind of tone that I want to eventually aim for has a name. And that name is DJENT!!!

So, all you Djenters out there, if you had unlimited amounts of money to spend on gear, what would be your ultimate Djent set-up? (Please also note any tonewod preferences for that ultra-awesome axe!)

I've been able to get close with my Pod XT, but pretty sure if I had the money, I might go for a Blackmachine with some suitable BKP's and something like a Framus Cobra, but that's first impressions.

The Amplug is an...interesting choice...

Any half-decent high-gain amp boosted with a tubescreamer-type boost can get close to the the "djent" sound. That said, the ENGL Powerball and Invader are both extremely favourable to that sort of tone. As noted, digital modellers are great for that sound too - the Axe-FX being the top of the pile if you want to go down that route.

Also extremely important is to string fairly light (e.g 10-52s or lower in Drop C) and pick flat to the strings.

It's an onomatopoeic term relating to a specific sound of a palm-muted powerchord. Whereas typical metal tones normally "chug", the addition of lots of upper-mids produces a sound with a different resonance - "djent". For reference, listen to Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve.
Recently the term has been turned into a genre tag for bands that tend to use that style tone (e.g. Periphery, TesseracT etc), though it's worth noting that none of those bands have ever labeled themselves as such.

Sounds like the word really, if you listen to Nolly's band / Meshuggah / Periphery / Bulb you'll kind of get what the name is about, it's the sound the guitars make when played and rigged for this kind of style. That's the info I got from Urban Dictionary and several other sources, like Last FM. Chuck "Djent" into Last and you get countless playlists.

So when you strike the string, instead of "twang" or "dunnnn" or even "chug chug chug" you get a nice sharp "djent!" out of it.

It's fast becoming my fave word, heh.  :)

I'm quite drunk (bday party!!!) but I'd go with

painkiller > axe-fx > vht 2:90:2 > bogner or diezel cab with g12k100s

I've not got a glue about which wood though!!! MDV will know with his tighter than a badger's chuff guitar!!!

PKs and various metal amps can do it. You want a large attack in the highs and a really tight bass.

Irksomely enough the POD is actually very good for it - its undynamic notes-are-on-or-off character helps with djent. Solid state amps can also be good for it due to the razor-sharpness and tightness. A peavey bandit djents surprisingly well!

A good gate is also a very big help to Djentlemen all over the world.
