Title: I now have a hole in my life......
Post by: Ian Price on May 18, 2009, 12:18:19 PM
Just finished watching season 5 of the wire and am already feeling like I have withdrawal symptoms. Any suggestions on decent TV dramas that I can get stuck in to?

If you haven't seen them already I strongly suggest that you get hold of all seasons of the wire, get plenty of food and drink, book a week off work, find somewhere comfortable and glue yourself to the TV. Fantastically fantastic TV that won't be matched for many, many years (if ever).

it was a sad day for me too... took about 6 months for the adopted dialect to wear off!

I am almost willing to say it was better than BSG!  Looking forward tothe caprica spin off of thatnlater this year.  the pilot was promising

we are struggling at the moment to find something good.  Carnivale was fun but only lasted 2 series, dollhouse and fringe are current favorites but its new Tv so means waiting for each week.

there is the other series done by the wire people, generation kill,  but its a military one and doesnt interest me... but then again neither did the wire till i actually watched it

i heard about this Caprica pilot, where did you see it?  i can't download tv or film as my "up to 2meg" broadband typically gives me 15 - 20 kb. magnificent.

S2 was my favourite. Although saying that is a bit pointless as S1 WAS my favourite, then S2, then S3, then S4. S5 is okay but not quite a good as the others - still great though!

Without spoiling anything has the duck been seen on S2 yet?

Generation Kill, OZ, Mad Men, The Corner, I'm also a big fan of Entourage (it's not a drama, if that's what you're looking for).

Pretty much anything for HBO seem to be good quality.

I keep hearing good things about The Wire but I've never seen a whole episode. I saw a bit of one on tv once and didnt find it very engaging so switched off, I guess you need to get the whole storyline?

I cant stand Lost, its just so ridiculous now. I've completely lost track of whats happening now and there are too many stupid plot twists in an attempt to drag it out into as many seasons as possible.

Stick with it Tom. It took me a few episodes to get in to Series 1 but then I was hooked for life! The beauty of The Wire, IMO, is that it doesn't offer instant gratification and you have to be a little patient in parts and watch the story unfold.

Some of my favourite series, not sure what youre into in the grand scheme

- BSG.
- Heroes.
- Generation Kill. Short, but rewatchable (I very rarely watch anything twice and I've seen this a few times through now)
- Babylon 5. If you get the slightest taste for it at all watch series 1 through 4 start to finish. Pretty much every story arc series owes its existance to this (and twin peaks).
- Firefly. Short, but great characterisation and dialogue
- My name is earl. Hilarious.
- Dollhouse. Looks like its futures in doubt, but it was good while it lasted.
- Big bang theory. Very funny indeed if youre geeky enough
- The mentalist. Good light entertainment
- Supernatural.
- Burn notice. Again, well made light entertainment
- Reaper. Similar

Thats pretty much the entirety of what I've paid any attention to in the last 4 years. If you like the wire, I dont know how well you'll take to any of that stuff, none of its exactly gritty drama, but that aint really how I roll.

I HATE Big Bang Theory. All the characters are so annoying :x

My Name is Earl is really well cast though, all the characters just look and act their roles perfectly :) I used to dislike it but have grown to love it.

Cheers MDV - I'm more into gritty dramas to be honest.

Is the sopranos gritty? Anyone?

They're characatures of the geekiest aspects of scientists. Its like you got 40 real physicists and distilled out all the geekiness and put it in 4 people to the exclusion of all other character traits. Theres enough geekiness in me and I've seen enough in my mates and collegues for me to find it very funny indeed.

In that case shorten the list to Generation Kill, BSG and Supernatural, in that order. GK is good ass drama, BSG is good ass drama in space and supernatural doesnt take itself that seriously but it has a bit of drama in it. The rest is basically 100% for the lulz. (not that they're all funny, but none of them are terribly serious)

Prison Break series one is really good if you havent allready seen it. Goes off the rails a bit after that but I need to see it through now!

Oh and no one has mentioned The Shield yet!

BSG is a possibility. Wez was bigging it up on the drive to Manchester and my partner has pretty much all of them on DVD. Maybe I'll give it a go.

+1, the big bang theory is great. they're a bit 2-dimensional (especially wollowitz), but i think it's getting a bit better. and as you say, they're caricatures.

EDIT: oh, what have i been watching recently... lost just finished, 24 is nearly finished, dexter is pretty good, the inbetweeners is awesome  i also got hooked on the practice, but its run seems to have finished too. big shots is actually pretty good, it's on RTE on a sunday night late. I think it got cancelled after one series, but most good things get cancelled to be replaced by an 11 series run of guff like will and grace o_O Oh and i watched the knights of prosperity which was pretty good too, but again its run seems to have finished. again cancelled after one series.

yeah, probably. it gets a bit tiresome with the odd bit of swearing and nudity which you know is just there to get it the "edgy" tag. That annoys me.

Ah, I had the same feelings when I finished The Wire at the beginning of the year. Just plain awesome.
And yes, if you liked that, then the Sopranos will probably appeal to you as well. It's similarly rewarding in its execution, and definitely has its gritty moments.

- Dollhouse. Looks like its futures in doubt, but it was good while it lasted.

i was told the other day that despite poor ratings they had decided to give the go ahead to the second series - partly due to the firefly effect

personally i think i am ready for all 7 series of Buffy again - that should get me through this lull in good TV

Nothing beats watching Dr Who from the first episode in 1963 - and it means that it takes a good 2 years to watch them all.

Shame about the low budget, garish colours, dodgey scripts, but then you can't have everything.  :D

I don't watch any of these new shows but Ian, if you like The Wire have you seen Homicide: Life on the Street?  Also created by David Simon.  I think it's available on UK DVD, or you can probably download it somewhere dodgy if you're into that kind of thing!

Life wasn't the same when I finished the Wire... :(

Lost finale was pretty good too, though the few episodes before it were better - Can't wait for next series.

Heroes has gotten progressively less cheesy and predictable, but its still annoying beyond belief - Not quite sure why I watch it.

BSG is great. The characters are absolutely fantastic, Kara is possibly the most badass character anyone's ever come up with.

Big Bang Theory is awesome. Truly. I want to play secret agent laser obstacle lunch at some point in my life.

They were OK, at the time! :P   But I don't watch much TV at all nowadays.

I don't have Sky, so I don't have access to a lot of these shows anyway.  But an awful lot of modern series seem to be based on the principle of "have one idea good enough for about six episodes, then if it's a hit just keep making it up as you go along, maintaining viewer interest by constantly hinting at some big future revelation which may never actually come".

I haven't got the patience for it.

yeah, a lot of the time it's like that. gets annoying when you're trying to work out what's going on and the writers haven't even decided yet! I've given up trying to work anything out. Unfortunately I only seem to realise a show is stringing me along when i've already been suckered in... :(

I stopped watching Lost and Heroes for that very reason. Very, very nearly lost patience with the current season of 24 but only a double episode to go before it all ends! I have huffed so much about it over the last 6 or so episodes that I thought I was huffocating  :o

 You would think Jack would have figured out by now that if he is only half way through his day and has caught a baddy/stopped a bomb/saved the world that there would be something bigger and more apocalyptic just about to happen. Those script writers must be thinking - "hey, let's put an apparent ending of a crisis half way through the series. The viewers will be shocked when xxxxxx happens after they thought it was the end"

The scene in the toilet in the most recent episode was one of the most ridiculously absurd pieces of writing in the history of 24!

:D :D It's more to do with he belief that you are more important than the show/other actors in the show. Apparently Shatner was a complete c*ck to his fellow actors, particularly in Star Trek, and often insisted on scenes being directed differently so he was the centre of focus. Not sure if is true or not but there are enough stories about scurrilous behaviour on his part to make it believable!

PDT_038 ... Let me guess, you enjoy the odd smoke while watching Black Books...

I admit that I buy a pack of 5 cheap cigars when I know I'm gonna get very drunk as then I won't be tempted to accept a cigarette from someone while I flirt with the girls outside the pub.

Cheap cigars are my methadone. They keep me from ever going back to the Marlboro.
