Title: ridiculous heavy gauge strings for teh br00talz
Post by: gwEm on May 19, 2009, 01:51:21 PM
i reckon on a 24 3/4" gibson scale guitar 13s should be the thing to use for drop c#, this generally seems to be a jazz gauge, with a wound 3rd(!).

any thoughts or recommendations on some 13s? i usually take feline or d'addario 11s for standard.

Zakk Wylde uses a .060" for the E when tunes on B, I might say that I like this tone better than 99% of guys with 25.5" scale guitars :)

I've using D'Addario EJ22 sets recently tuned to B standard on a 25 1/2" scale neck.  Apart from maybe wanting a little bit think low B they're spot on.

Get some custom thick-cored strings from Newtone.

I'm using 14s, although my barry has 26.5" to 28" scales, so this is less ridiculous. The low A string is 0.068 I think. They're D'Addario Baritones (can't remember the exact details, and I'm currently at work), although I have also used the EJ22s on a 25.5" ibanez for low drop-A, and that worked nicely, too.

I was intrigued by the Newtone strings, but haven't been bothered to call them up and discuss exact requirements just yet. Plenty of other things to deal with first!!

I've got 13's on that black Schecter from the jam gwEm. I think you had a go on it, the one with the pig in the bridge.

I'd be more worried about the gauges of the wounds, most sets for me never had wounds thick enough, for my preference anyway, hence I always get singles

if you don't want to get custom/singles I'd get a 7 string set, I dunno how strings feel on a 24.75" neck but you have less tension compared to a 25.5" neck so maybe something more than 0.052" for the lowest string

what tuning and sets do you use at the moment? wouldn't be hard to work out similar tension for down tuning using this website http://www.bangzero.org/stringtension/

I play C standard on my Epi SG with 13s, with the wound 3rd etc, works perfec'

I laugh when anyone writes 'heavy gauges' now. Although my high end = 11/might switch to a 10 soon (this is on a 27" scale length) I used back up to 75s and am trying an 80 soon in standard B on a 7 string, mwahahahaaa.

Have any of you found that in a regular guitar shop it's really difficult to get any strings above a .56 most of the time?

Yes!

And as essentially the only reason I ever go to a guitar shop, that means I now barely ever go to one.

I use these in 15s for slide

might also work for metal?

Yep, it's why I buy 7 string sets and ditch the top E. Most places keep the D'addario 10-59 packs.

I got my diadario 12-64s from strings direct as individual strings.

its not hard to find the guages you want.

I hate dead strings and seemingly I have the most corrosive sweat in the world

So being able to buy boxes of strings at a time for cost+VAT kind of made sets the way to go.

But I'm gonna see how I get on with the Newtones.

Let us know on that.

I still have a few guitars with the diadarios on them (I only got 4 newtones). I cant stand to play them now, both because of the inherent unpleasantness of playing suspension bridge cables (that I've always just put up with for superior tone) and the now hugely inferior tone.
