It started with this, a BYOC OD2 - TS-808 clone
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3379/3475275601_4039fa8f3c_m.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3379/3475275601_b79b051345_o.jpg)

Closely followed by a BYOC 2 Knob Bender (though mine has 3) - MkII Professional Tonebender clone
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3391/3560676750_edf49fba42_m.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3391/3560676750_d06a35a5a9_o.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3554/3560676106_f400dd662b_m.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3554/3560676106_9596463f54_o.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2142/3533460215_5700406c46_m.jpg) (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2142/3533460215_3df676540d_o.jpg)
Then I went proper DIY with a EH LPB-1 clone feeding a valvecaster. Essentially a valve boost with a transistor boost on the front of it that can make the valve go mental, almost a valve fuzz. Great sounding thing. Shame I made it long before I had any idea what enclosure it was going into, so the wires are, err, a little long. That and when I did sort the enclosure, I drilled it for smaller pots than I had so the holes needed to be 'adjusted'. Hmmm, anyhow it works so well that there's no way I'm going to rehouse it just for prettiness sakes.

Finally, a BYOC Script 90 - Phase 90 clone. Topical decals if nothing else...

I'm not an addict...
...Ok so I have a Marshall Shredmaster clone in build, a dying battery simulator for the fuzz after that and probably a one knob silicon fuzz...
But I can stop at any time!
-
They look great!
I really want to build some pedals myself (as well as a guitar at some point) but I'm horrendously lethargic, and tend to think I'd just end up with piles of rubbish when they eventually got finished
-
Have only built 2, the BYOC mouse2 and the OD2..is addictive..if I had more cash would have more (oh yeah also built the ruby amp in a pedal)
-
Oh I forgot about the amp ;)

Though I need to pull that apart at some point and replace all the caps are they're completely the wrong type rendering the gain and grit controls a little redundant...
But yes, massively addictive.
-
Now messing with amps..yeah am into that at moment
-
I completely love the case designs!
Even a completely non-guitarist friend of mine loves the Bender and Star Trek one, awesome.
Also... what's that kit car/caterham a-like on your website?
I really love those things, I'd have one as an every-day car if I wouldn't be deadly afraid of it being nicked!
-

Just built the mouse 2 and added the Ruetz mod but was thinking of the OD2 also, does the mouse cover a lot of ground that the OD2 does or are they completely different? I can get some pretty decent OD tones from the MOSFET clipping selection so just wandering if the OD2 would be worth it, how do they compare?
Yeah definitely getting hooked, think I'll go with the chorus next and then perhaps something none BYOC from scratch.
Mine certainly won't be looking as good as theese though!

It's a Westfield, similar to a Caterham, but more of a kit car if you see what I mean. Top toys. I used to have a Cosworth powered one before that one and that was just mental. A little too mental most of the time in all honesty and I've toned it down a lot with the new one. Still 165bhp in 535kgs still goes like hell. They're not really everyday cars though. In the rain you will get soaked. Even the ones with the heater/windscreen/doors/soft top really aren't what you'd consider watertight or civilised. Better just to abandon such uneccessary weighty items and condisder the car as a 4 wheeled motorbike and dress accordingly.
What I will say though is you need to have a go of one. There really is nothing like them and it really makes you redefine what you think about sports cars. To make matters even more interesting I'm actually dual driving this this year. Even lighter and a little more power, this time with aerodynamics and proper downforce! Awesome fun.

Mouse ain't a bad OD on the mosfet circuit..but the OD2 is far better

Oh it sounds like you're having a blast :) I'd love to be able to afford to go to race days, heck even having a car would be nice...
Must have a pretty nice job to be able to do stuff like that! I can't wait until I'm earning enough, I'm afraid that by the time I can even afford the car insurance all the oil will be used up and we'll all be using rubbish silent electric cars. Nothing beats the sounds of a good engine, I don't care if it wakes up the neighbours
I'm afraid I'll never get to have a Ford Shelby Mustang GT500, AC Cobra or a GT-40 (why are all my current favourites Fords?!)
Ah, I can dream I suppose...
-
Those look very cool.
I've only made one so far.

Awesome, lol that the right hand stomp is so appropriately positioned! :p

One of the perks of being an geeky IT bod. There are plenty of downsides, but the pay is decent.

Good taste. I also have a weakness for Ford lumps and old Fords. Older cars are the way forward anyhow, most modern stuff leaves me cold.
-
I'm well impressed with the Phaser clone you had done - being a Trekkie as a kid that really appeals to me, I'd buy that off you in a heartbeat :D
Love the graphics on the OD-2 as well (which I'd take off you too given half a chance but I've got one of the high gain BlackStar Pedals which is pretty much the perfect pedal for me).
Very good work from all! Wish I had the skill to solder/do the graphics
-
Speaking of old Fords, here's mine.

OK, back on topic everyone.
-
I r envious.
I want to build some pedals and amps.
-
I think I'm gonna order a BYOC Tremolo when they're back in stock at vibe-o-tronic.
I LOVE tremolo... I was never really a pedal kinda person but lately I've had massive cravings for tremolo and delay.
-
i built the BYOC mighty mouse once.
that was cool but its since been butchered. i wasn't a fan of it, but i could get some seriously meaty tones out of it, and it was loud as hell.
-
i just did a noisey cricket because of the beefy one you did - pretty awesome
i also did a so simple compressor the other day and i am still twiddling with the trim pots on that
nothing fancy with the cases though
-
I really like the BYOC kits I've done so far, not one of them has been a duffer. Particularly the fuzz, love that. The only issue I had with it was the bias. Set where it should be is cool, but I also liked really compressing the shite out of it and it going really nasty. Hence I moved it to a pot on the front. I wouldn't mind doing the mosfet mods to the OD2 also, that could be fun, but I'd probably do that as a fresh build with the other opamp also.

Those pedals look excellent! well done.

Juan also did the soldering and wiring in my Valvecaster as my abilities are substandard and inferior!

There's probably about a quater of the wire in that than mine as it is, so I'm getting there. I just need more practice. Fear me when I get the heatshrink and cable ties out...
-
what pedal is that..is it based on something

I'm envious of your skills, juan!

juan - where you from?
If you're piloting that thing in the UK, drop me a PM if you're going to Mallory Park. I only live round the corner.

It's actually a valvecaster on the end of a switchable (could easily be made stompable) EH Linear Power Boost clone. The VC on it's own is awesome. With the LPB switched in and dialed up it becomes a proper valve distortion, bordering on fuzz! It's actually probably my favorite of the lot so far sonically. Killer pedal.

We're at Spa in July. The Radical is actually a friends car that I'm dual driving (for as long as he'll let me). We just did Silverstone with it a couple of weeks or so ago and it was bloody marvelous until the clutch started slipping over 8000rpm, grrr! It's got a new one in now so hopefully all should be good for it's next outing. I might try and get the Westy down to a track at some point during the summer. Don't know when and where yet though as I'm struggling for time off at the moment. I'll bob you a line if we ever make it that way with it.
-
Great looking pedals Juan. Nice looking car too. I've been around Spa, its a great place. :D

A productive weekend!

This was originally going to be a Coloursound 1 knob fuzz clone, but I managed to find a schematic for one of the earlier DAM Meatheads (there have been several revisions), so thought I'd give that a go instead. Pretty cool. I ended up making a pair of them anyhow (one for Marauder) which are pretty much identical apart from the LEDs (mine's the violet one in the corner, his is the orange one in the R).
I was having camera issues also. The Dirt Boxes are actually very deep purple, more so than it shows in the pictures. The Master Shredder came out looking like two shades of green for some reason... It's more like the photo with the flash (Kawasaki green).

The look great! nice one man!
I keep wanting to order a BYOC pedal to have a go at, but all the ones I'm interested are sold out!
Anyone know how often they restock?

Are you talking about Vibe-o-tronic (UK Distributer), they've just re-stocked (though they didn't get any Muffs :( ). No idea for anywhere else.

Yeah. They still don't have the Tremolo or the Opto Comp or the Mighty Mouse or the E.S.V Fuzz, or some others, but I'm not interested in them.

Built for Marauder based on the EF86 Valve Distortion vero, but with a 6BR7 instead which is not only massively cheaper, it doesn't have any microphonic problems (which is why it was made in the first place). It has different pinouts however so isn't a straight swap. Also added is some diode clipping on a switch. The only thing that's a bit odd at the moment is that the knob is far too high, this will be swapped for a Telecaster knob in due course, which doesn't look quite so ridiculous.

I'm really quite proud of the wiring on this one.
Next I think will be a Vibracaster (tube boost/tremolo) for me. But based on this valve, purely for just how clean this pedal was boost-wise. That and it gives me an excuse to jam the tremolo circuit in there. I haven't decided but I might stick the LPB-1 in there also on a stomp. Ambitious..., possibly. Then Marauder is wanting a Marshall Shredmaster clone. It'll keep me busy, that's for sure.

very nice - I'm always looking for alternative preamp pentodes as EF86s are stupidly expensive and go microphonic very quickly used in amps at gig volumes.
you got a schematic for that pedal? - I'm assuming the voltage is kept low, I can't see any doublers or charge pumps in there ????

It's this (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18101), but with the pinouts swapped for the 6BR7 (http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0346.htm) vs the EF86 (http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aai0113.htm) and some diode clipping on the switch. There's really nothing to it. We're running it at 12v.

got any clips of it?
I'd be looking to feed the valve with a HV supply - might as well if you're going to the trouble of building it, it's only a small mains tx, something like a 150-0-150 would be spot on.
(thinking out loud), wonder how a little 12v (dual tap) transformer would work out with the windings in series (24vac), then into a diode bridge (hmm, scratches chin). it wouldn't get anywhere near 150v on the plates of the EF86, but it'd be more in the ballpark than a 12vdc supply.
sounds like I'm talking myself into a Matchless Hotbox type of build :D
-
Sounds like a plan. Marauder has the pedal now (plus I have nothing to record it with anyhow) so no chance for clips I'm afraid :(
-
Great looking pedals.
I LOVE the idea, did a BYOC 250 clone, and that was great. Then tried an OLC Orange Peel, and screwed that up. And just tried a BYOC OD2, and managed to screw that one too...
:(
I might have to accept that I'm just not that good at it.
-
Another built for Marauder who is not so keen on the more outlandish designs I like, and prefers ones that 'aren't as fussy'. Fair enough, I'll be making up for this shortly if mine works when I finish it shortly... Anyhow, back to this one. It's a Shredmaster built on the BYOC board with enormous caps as that's all we had lying around. Nothing too radical here, the Bright switch swaps a cap to brighten it up a bit on demand as mine can be a bit dark on humbuckers but is brill on single coils (I'll be adding this to mine also). The Crunch mode switch just flips between sync and async clipping.
Piccies (the sockets are ancient, hence the splurgage and the decal stretched when I stuck it on, bar-steward thing!).

Another EF86 Valve Distortion (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18101), again built with a 6BR7 instead. A bit more abitious this one with added tone and gain controls. Additionally a multitude of clipping options on a rotary switch. LED jammed up the valve socket as usual.
I really don't like big decals, this one has a couple of defects :(

Great looking pedals, I'd love to hear them. The only thing is I'd be worried about kicking the valve when I was using it (especially the smaller one). You do incredibly neat wiring too!

that looks ace, i want one!

All the valve ones so far are being used at home only so it's not that risky. However if I was doing one for someone who planned on using it in anger, I'd probably have to move it to inside the enclosure or put a bar in front of it or something. I might try and make the next one a bit more robust in that respect and see how it works. The wiring I'm definitely getting better at the more I do!

Taking the valve based pedal thing a little further... This came about from running a Valve-o-tron into a Valvecaster and it sounding really very good. As we know the valve caster responds well to boost on the front of it, it seemed only right for that boost to come from a valve also. That I knew would work, so to make it more interesting instead of a straight Valvecaster, it's the Vibracaster tremolo instead.
Currently entered into a competiton *fingers crossed*

A compressor. Mine is built with the left over Burr Brown opamp from the OD2 and Marauder's with a TI (his is the one with the big knob). This has also been used to trial some new decals rather than waterslides. The diode is backwards in the gut-shot of mine, this has been corrected since the picture was taken. We've got some uber-sensitive trim pots on the way as these are a right bar-steward to bias.
I also got around to laying down the schematic for the Valve-o-tron for whomever asked for it:

I've currently got another 4 planned.
But I can stop any time...

that's what they all say.....

Dang who built that? That looks great

apart from the big scary resistor...removed a load of them from an amp

The big scary resistor did indeed come out of an old amp IIRC. It just happened to be the only one I had handy at the time that was the right rating.

Woohoo, The Vibratron came 2nd!

Any DIY books I should study for this stuff? I have zero experience with pedal building or much with electronics i only have recently gotten the burning desire to learn all that I can about everything to do with music engineering. I am getting some great tools for guitar building and have lots of learning materials on that stuff but nothing for pedals

Some of these are quite heavy going (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19908)
My advice would be to get a couple of the easier all inclusive kits and do those. The more you do, the more sense it makes. It's all quite logical when you start to break it down as to where the signal is going. I just find it all kinda snaps into place as you do it rather than reading the theory.

Quite possibly the coolest and at the same time, the most useless, guitar effect of all time. If you're a child of the 70's and grew up with Atari 2600s and Sinclair Spectrums, you'll know the delight of very primitive soundchip music. This magnificent creation will take you right back there. It uses the input signal from your guitar to trigger the effect, and the effect is epic.
Here is a link to the thread that started it all (with soundclip by ISB) (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18708). Go on, you know you want to. In fact I may have to make another, as the LFO trim pot (SHINE knob on mine) would work brilliantly as an expression pedal... Now there's an idea!

Some work in progress:

On the left is a DAM Sonic Titan that doesn't currently work. It's got the wrong transistor in it at the moment and a couple of caps are in parallel to make up for not currently having the right cap handy and it's really not very much of a Titan... The right bits should arrive tomorrow and if it's still not working it's time for some fault finding. On the right is a Super Hard On, which I made for shites and giggles (as there really is nothing to it and I had all the bits handy) and to test the millennium bypass which allows a led to be used with a DPDT stomp vs a stupidly expensive 3PDT stomp (about £1.50 vs £4). It all adds up :-) What shocked me is just how good the SHO sounds. To the point that I'm going to case that one up. Really surprisingly good for how little is in it.

Just listened to the audio for the gameboy pedal. It sounds amazing. If my electronic skills stretched further than wiring pickups in I would totally build one.

I'll be building another on probably this weekend to debug that unverified vero I posted (that apparently doesn't work for some reason...). Having said that, I've got this lot to get out of the way first!
From the left clockwise: a rehouse of a Small Clone, a Slow Gear clone, a couple of super hard on's (only one showing), a re-house of my old DAM Meathead clone to go alongside the Sonic Titan clone (now working) that's sat next to it.

To juan solo where did you get schematics for your valve pedals? Also does having a valve in the pedal improve the tone of say a distortion. I am loving this stuff here it looks good. I am getting some books from indyguitar, and a couple of byoc kits.
-
The valve pedals are probably my favorites by far. The first two are Matsumin Valvecasters with a EH LPB-1 on the front of them. I got the vero for them somewhere and have never been able to find where from to give credit where it's due. I've been through the massive thread on DIYStompBoxes and just never managed to find it, so here it is.
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3314/3575711400_ced6fa9c84.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3314/3575711400_5e08045ef4_o.jpg)
It's a very warm distortion. A great sound. Kick in the LPB and it can be cranked into a smoooooth fuzz. I love this pedal.
The second is an EH86 distortion that we frigged to use a 6BR7 as that is much cheaper and doesn't suffer from microphonics like the EH86 does. This is more of a boost/overdrive pedal, that with some optional clippers, can do a bit of distortion.
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3572/3654763766_d34f12c788.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3572/3654763766_7c5ec31167_o.jpg)
The last was the logical conclusion of the two. Using the valve boost of the 6BR7 in the place of the LPB-1 in front of the valvecaster for a single, all-valve pedal. To make it even more interesting the Valvevaster side of things is a Vibracaster tremolo (haven't got the schematic handy for that). Turn the depth all the way down and it operates like a valvecaster, turn it up and it's a tremolo. Very, very cool (and very big, there's three meters of wire in it!).
I'm not done with the valves either. I'm going to build a Twincaster (exactly what you'd expect it to be) and a twin sub-mini tube dirt pedal. I've got all the bits, I just need to get around to it.

Juan...seriously....I'm on gas-a-thon for some of your pedals mate!
