Hi
So I have to admit my usual whiskey used to be Jack Daniels (Gentleman or just standard No7), but living in the UK there's just so much nicer (and not overpriced) whiskey available. Any recommendations of stuff you can get in local Tescos/Sainsburys/Selfridges?
My favorite Vodka handsdown is Absolut.

I like Laphroaig but I havent tried many others. I dont like vodka, all those I've tried taste like chemicals to me.
-
i like that vodka which has the blade of grass in it.
-
Absolut? Is that a joke? PDT_008
-
I don't drink whiskey, but Glenfiddich 12 year is a popular gift to my parents :)
-
I like Belvidere for Vodka. I don't really drink Scotch whisky or Irish Whiskey - I just supply it to people who do drink it when they come around! Popular ones at the moment are Tamnavulin and Isle of Jura. Macallan, Dalwhinne and Balvenie always go quickly too! I like Gin though, my favourite was Tanqueray Malacca which they discontinued but I like regular Bombay (not Saphire) and Tanqueray Ten.

bison grass - lovely with apple juice... normal vodka and apple aint nice but the bison grass is a bit spicy so it works well
i havnt had so much whisky recently but have been buying loads of Gin. Tanqueray for the classics, Hendricks for something a bit different

Jack Daniels is for giving to people that you don't like! Jack Daniels versus a proper whisky (notice the spelling) is like comparing cream and piss. You can drink both but...
If you're judging whisky by the cost then you're missing out on a whole world of pleasure.
-
I adore Southern Comfort, I love to drink it neat (& yes I know it's a bourbon not a whisky)
-
Cardhu's nice with a bit of ice.
Vodka's a girls drink :D

Yeah guys Zubrowka Bison Grass as the best Flavoured Vodka here :

As for Whisky now....well I'm pretty sure there are some secret places in Scotland and Ireland where you can find awesome "local-no-named-distilleries" that do not compare to the renowned commercial brands... The thing is you need a map to find your way there, or you'll get lost. Don't the Scottish say whisky is "the water of life" ?

I think you will find some good recomendations in here.
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10229.0
I like Ardbeg and Laphroaig both 10 year single malts from Islay.
-
I had some the other week in one of the locals. Never seen it before and I'll try to get the name, but it was 20 years old and quite possibly the foulest thing I have ever drunk. It was all syrupy and tasted bloody aweful.
Cost me £3.50 for a single too.

Deanston 8yr is probably my favourite whiskey. I've not found it outside of Stirlingshire, though. Other than that, ardbeg and dalwhinnie are pretty decent.
As for Vodka, Bison grass all the way. The only Smirnoff I would touch is Black, and that's only just drinkable.

I am very unstylish: Jack Daniels on the rocks
-
I'm with JohnnyMac, I love Islay whiskies especially Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg.
I've also become fond of a few bourbons, Evan Williams (ahh.. a good Welsh name if ever there was one) is pretty good, and my favourite Japanese whisky is Hakushu made by Suntory. It's got as much character and complexity as a good Scottish single malt but with a slightly different twist.
IMO any other Japanese whisky needs to be drowned in water to make it drinkable.
-
I don't like Vodka or Whiskey. :D
-
Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish is my tipple of choice:
-
Anyone tried Knobs Creek. I don't know much about it (Other than its aged 9 years) or about whisky in fact, but I have tried many and this ones been my favourite so far.

-
Probably laphroaig 10yr or caol isla 18 year old for whiskey. Honorable mention to Talisker, balvevie and ardbeg.
That said, I like to savour those - If I'm on some sort of whiskey drinking mission then I switch to whisky and go for the JD or Jonny walker black.
-
Any old excuse to dig out the pics and show off ;)
Now, this is whisky!

I'm glad to say the collection has expanded somewhat since those were taken and there's quite a lot more there now.
In fact, looking at them like that, I may just have a tasting session tonight. :D
-

Zubrowka!!! Definitely this. Best vodka by a country mile imo.
I adore Southern Comfort, I love to drink it neat (& yes I know it's a bourbon not a whisky)
It's not even a Bourbon, it's a flavoured liqueur with Bourbon in it! :P
-
I love my single malts
Welsh whiskey from the Penderyn distillery is good stuff
Picked up a bottle of Japanese whiskey called Yamazaki but not got the chance to try it yet
Shobet. It's good to see you clearly drink your whiskey by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle endorsed mugfull
-
I used to really like Southern Comfort but it just tastes too sickly sweet for me now.

No its not, its whiskey.
If youre gonna brag about it, spell it right :P

Nice collection, Shobet.
I think Jack Daniels isn't too bad, it's just not worth the price they ask for it here in the supermarket.
This is PART of my friends collection btw, I remembered I had these pictures still on my PC; his Irish/Scottish Whiskeys aren't there. I didn't meet him for quite a while, unfortunately, let alone do I remember the names of the whiskeys i tried at his place.

If it is Scotch he did spell it right - whiskey with an 'e' is Irish or American.

Dammit!
I hereby retract my smugness.

I am another Islay whisky fan and Laphroaig is the one I go for the most. Not really into Vodka at all (though as a teenager I used to have it in a glass of Cider and I liked to get out of my tree on account of a not very pleasant situation I was in- and so I associate Vodka with bad times and have no desire to ever drink it again).
If I were Shobert I would put that Turtles mug to good use and work my way through those bottles.
-
I drink more Ardbeg and Laphroig than anything else, but I do like a lot of other whisky. It's my main indulgence outwith guitars and cigars.

Aherm, I'll accept your apology in the form of a wee dram. ;)

Some of those will need to last a bloody long time as I'm never going to get them again for the price I paid. Especially the Port Ellen bottles.
I like quite a lot of the independent bottlers, Signatory being a stand out one for consistency of quality from my experience. You can't beat the Islay malts for that in your face peaty iodine taste. However I do like the mainland distilleries as well. I'm quite lucky/unlucky - depending on my bank managers opinion - to have this shop just up the road http://www.wineandwhisky.com, it's a terrible place!
I'll shut up now before I bore you all to death.

Love to, taliskers all I got in at the moment, that cool?

Bring the bottle to the next Bareknuckles northern do!

It'll be a different bottle by then!

i dont drink either.
but i am quite partial to a c--ktail involving wine in a coke can. i call it a 'jesus juice'.
-
Not a fan of scotch whiskeys at all but Bourbon does have a soft spot. Every time I go to a show with these guys (www.myspace.com/motorcitydaredevils) a LOT of Wild Turkey gets drunk :D
Vodka is also another close to my heart and TBH, for stuff straight from the supermarket you can't really get much better than Stoli.
-
Laphroig.
-
Jamesons
Dont care much about how old stuff is, exept when guitars and women are involved :P

i prefer them young. both. :)

Now there's a man of taste and quality, Glenlivet is very nice too.
I used to like the original Smirnoff vodka but in the last 15 years or so something's changed and it tastes like antifreeze.
It's all academic for me now anyway as I've developed an allergy to alcohol, I can sniff but not touch. :(

i've never heard of alcohol allergy, but it's a TERRIBLE thing!
-
It makes me sick if I drink enough of it. I think it's quite a common problem! ;)
-
not whiskey or vodka but if you want some champagne, buy some British sparkling white wine called Nyetimber next time your in Waitrose, about £22 a bottle I think
loads better than all the French cr@p that pretends it's posh and expensive
-
As I am French, a good olde 50 year Cognac Héritage Prestige is my fav'. About other liquors, Zubrowka makes me happy but IMO most of whiskies doesn't deserve any interest; the Islay ones are the BEST. My prefered islays are Lagavulin 16, Bunnahabhain Toiteach and the marvellous Ledaig. I'd like some advices about good whisky in the same genre or some great Highland/Lowland ones.
Cheers!
-
In terms of American whiskey, I'll go for Jack Daniels if I'm out and the selection is limited. I'm also a big fan of Wild Turkey, Bulleit and Maker's Mark. British whisky-wise, a nice Laphroaig almost always hits the spot for me.
Not a big vodka drinker, but out of the ones I've tried, Grey Goose was the one that really stood out.
-
Jack Daniels is my drink of choice these days.
-
I've been drinking real ales a bit too much recently and I can now add another favorite: Badgers Champion Gold (joins Batemans Combined Harvest at the top of the list)
-
You want to try Timothy Tailor's Landlord.
Best real ale in the world IMO.
-
Anyone tried exmoor beast ale? They had it for cheap at wetherspoons a while ago. Very nice. I imagine its what guinness would taste like if it had flavour
-

i agree. find a good pub that offers it on tap and its perfect. A have had many sessions on it and its perfect for them
sadly its just nice form a bottle!
Sometimes its not the beer but the pub you are drinking it in. Pedigree is the perfect example of this. I have rarely had a good pint of pedi outside of burton, and sadly very few burton pubs still treat it the way it should be treated... and i dont believe its all still made in burton. But some pubs in the area do it perfectly and it is capable of godliness
we still have some good real ale pubs but quite strangely very few now sell the local brews, other than the couple of pubs selling burton bridge beers which can be a bit of an aquired taste if you are not used to them
-
I see many Single types of malt mentioned, and a couple that are more for show than a good seasoned session get together. Personally, I go with Johnnie Walker Gold on the most consistent basis, no regrets.
