Should I buy one?
How would I spot a lemon, indeed are there Squire CV lemons?
Please help me.. I'm going nuts with Tele GAS since the BKP meet in London.
Pros
- Adored by even experienced Tele owners
- No immediate need to replace any hardware
- 9.5 radius
- Routed for a neck humbucker under the guard
- Brass bridge
Cons
- Only available in White
- I already have alot of guitars and not alot of money
I may just be obsessed and in a Tele GAS frenzy but they sound like such a good purchase.
-
One thing to watch is the neck profile - it's quite shallow. But as you like Ibanez and BC Rich superstrats you'll be fine.
They can be a bit heavy, so try before you buy if that bothers you. I'd buy one sight unseen though, no problem. The quality is very very good.
-
I do like quite a shallow neck so that goes into the plus side as well. :? It gets harder to say no.

List all of your guitars in order of most favoured to least, and pick which one you are going to sell :P
You are too far gone
-
Do it, Dave. Real men play Telecasters.
Everyone knows that.
Mark.
-
DO IT!
You can re-finish it at not a (very) big money, although the re-sale value will fall...
BUY AND PUT .011"!!!
-
Real men probably do play Telecasters but real men don't listen to their wallet more than their heads.
It's all great and dandy you like Telecasters and would generally love one but I think the lack of money should be put into greater consideration than just a 'point'.
Unless you sell a guitar for one, then ignore all the above, lol..

The CV Tele has build a reputation for being very consistent. There's a chance a bad one's out there but I've not heard a report to that extent. If you like the thin neck, there's no better Tele in the price range.

Just do it!
I've never seen a man so happy playing with someone else's instrument as you were last weekend...

Ahh Sweet Memories.... I had to cradle Badgermarks instrument in my arms as it usually swings too low between his legs.

Now that aint true, it swung around YOUR legs not mine shortarse. I say go try some out, they are spot on teles that shouldn't need upgrading, the pickups and hardware are spot on already.

Q: Should I buy one?
A: Yes.
Q: How would I spot a lemon, indeed are there Squire CV lemons?
A: Quality is very consistent. Weak spots are the switch and jack.
Only available in White
Reply: What's wrong with white?
I already have alot of guitars and not alot of money
Reply: You don't have a Tele yet. Every guitarist should own one IMO and it's cheap.

If you like the neck profile (I didn't, that's all that stopped me) then I think it's the best value tele-type-thing going at the moment.
On the white finish, I'm sure I saw a thread on the tdpri forum a while back where someone had removed the finish and then oiled it - looked absolutely KILLER. Apparently they got the finish off really easily with a heat gun, with only minor blemishes caused by initial over-enthusiastic use of the gun.
But (bear in mind I didn't witnes your drooling/etc in person), I would also say that "alot of guitars and not alot of money" possibly requires a bit of consideration....
... NAH... buy one!!
-
As Andy said, if the finish is poly, you can use a heat gun to remove the finish... But (as he said again) beware to not stop in the same point or it will burn the wood :D

Everyone's going about the neck, what's up with it? Whats it like compared to other guitars?
I am interested now. Oh shite..
-
It's quite a slim neck on the CV Jonny (had FABULOUS frets on the one I tried) - I've got used to great big tree-trunk type necks, especially on something that sounds like a telecaster.
The Squire CV tele is possibly the tele for folks what like slim necks but want a "man's guitar"
-
It's what Fender call modern 'C' shape, it's thinner than the tradition medium 'C' shape used on many Fenders and Squires. It's not that it's stick thin, it's just that retro type guitars (for want on a better word) usually have larger necks. I prefer big necks, it seems that each year that goes by it's becoming harder to find guitars without thin necks :(

I wouldn't say that? Depends on what you like and your price point I guess....
-
Just a personal point of view, I'm not trying to convince anyone :)
Yes, the price point does matter, most CS Tele's don't have thin necks. My point is that 20 years ago (when I bought my first Tele) there were no Tele's with thin necks. The Tele world was my oyster, I could pick any Tele off-the-rack and it would suit me. Back then I bought a MIJ Standard (and I still have it), now if I bought a MIA or MIM Standard, it would have a thin neck.
Things aren't all bad though. I think all the Classic Player series have medium or large necks, that's why I bough a Baja 8)
The solution to my problem is to stop being a skinflint and buy a CS Tele

Indeed! I took mine to band rehearsal last night and it smoked a fat one 8) It cut through the mix superbly and was plenty beefy enough for anything from Brown Sugar by the Stones to Holy Diver by Dio.
If you like Teles, the Custom Shop stuff they're putting out now is superb.
